And Then We Danced Reviews
ACTIONS speak louder than WORDS (I’m talking about the Spirited Away poster, not the last dance)
I can feel the depth and the warmth in this movie, the struggle between musculine folk dance and self identity is very powerful. it just beautiful and touching. I watched it again and I think this is my favorite LGBT movie of decade.
Really great movie, beautiful from every side and the part of the story are well combined: dance, romance and society issues. Also the performance from the main actor is very touching.
This is quite a cultural film, featuring lots of Georgian dancing and singing (which I quite enjoyed). There are some nice settings too of course. Its also somewhat thought provoking, given the plotline. The cast were good and it was quite a good film overall, so yes I'd recommend it.
Superb cinematography. Characters are realistic. Story integrates local flavor (Georgian culture) and the underground gay culture in that country. Special mention: editing, for those dance sequences. Bravo! Love that continuous shot after the wedding (while Merab was looking for Irakli); and then again after they talked. That last dance sequence reminded me of FLASHDANCE. Considering what the filmmaker had been through to make this movie, this one deserves nothing less than…. 10 / 10
I am such a coward that I stopped this film three times and each time i had to coax myself back onto the chair in front of the telly and start it again. It is an extraordinarily beautiful film to watch - gorgeously coloured sets of layered and dilapidated apartments and houses that have evolved with time, old and charmingly tainted wall paper, walls and rooms decorated with paintings, fabrics and objects that appear to have been in the family for generations, and beautiful people within. Couched in this setting, a rich culture of music and dance, and loving families and friendships, is this story of a young man's defiance in the face of hatred and repression masquerading as a hyper masculine ideal. The story is well told and utterly authentic, and the acting superb, so that the movie draws you in and takes you along until the final, unexpected finale. in this film courage, in the face of all that might be lost, is wonderfully depicted which in turn must give courage to anyone living in repression and fear.
A great homogeneous film included some sexual scenes. I was a little confused at first but after reading all those comments after Cannes 2019, I went for it undoubtedly. Lightings and sounds are enjoyable. Main actor has an inspirational face and the director was focussed on it totally through those motions of eyes. Must-watch movies!
If people might ask one day how do gays feel, love and live then this is the right movie. Emotions are so nicely worked by just a move of hands or a way of looking that makes this movie impressive. During the movie you don't have time to think what is happening because is already happening and you are busy trying to search yourself as human being in those deep emotions. I'd hope this movie would be an OSCAR but yeah they lost a good movie!!! For people that like good movies, please don't miss this one!🍀
A beautiful Georgian movie who combines tradition with modernism. Levan Gelbakhiani did an outstanding job as Merab and makes his character relate to us. The chemistry between him and Bachi Valishvili is not only relatable , but also has a lot of tension that leads to that passionate night. His dance in the last scene is a letter to his lost love, his coming-out and acceptance and reconciled bond between friends and family. This iresistible and hard not-to-watch movie leaves you surprised and in awww and hoping that Merab finds the one true love like he found in Irakli
Unfortunately people hyped it up too much before I saw it and it didn't reach my expectations. It was good in many ways (especially for using Abba and Robyn on the soundtrack lol), but not as mindblowingly good as some made it seem.
A struggle between sexual identity and the macho culture of Georgian Dance is delivered with outstanding observation. A must see LGBTQ film of our times.
Basically what you'd get if Brokeback Mountain were about dancers and not ranch hands, And Then We Danced is beautiful film, made with passion and a desire to tell a story that the filmmakers knew would ruffle a few feathers. Conservative Georgians were outraged that the central love story involves 2 people of the same gender, completely missing the point of a forbidden romance. The fantastic acting is bolstered by a sensitive script that might feel meandering at times, but it mostly keeps focus on the 2 leads and how their lives change dramatically over the course of the film. It demonstrates not only how strong human emotions can be, but also how much a person can express themselves through the medium of dance, not saying a single word, instead allowing the movements of their bodies to tell a story. It doesn't quite have Brokeback's rewatchability, but there's truly a lot to admire in the Directors vision and in the tale he worked hard to tell. A very underappreciated movie that deserves a lot more recognition, and a lot more fans.
Sweden's entry for last year's best foreign language film is a Georgian (country not state) picture that is one of the most sensual love stories in recent memory. This is a slow burn and as the tension rises so does the passion. This film has been done many ways, but there's something different here. Incorporating dance didn't feel forced, but rather organic and it takes away part of the problem from a screenplay that is a little light. The key here is the forbidden love of two people whose affection so clearly comes across on screen. This is shot with such a sense of emotion in large part thanks to the close ups that are held longer than we're cultured to. The emotional build leads to a powerful third act. While this film is a fairly standard gay romance, it broke ground in Georgia. I really enjoyed this and it isn't my typical cup of tea. That music, wow! Final Score: 8.8/10
Between 2.5 and 3 stars. It has good intentions, but does not tell us anything we have not seen in other movies.
Best movie I have see so far this year. writing, directing and editing are perfect. Excellent M. Levan Akin !!!!
Una asombrosa, profunda y hermosa historia construida a parir del silencio, el miedo y el arte que va más allá del amor. An awesome, deep and beautiful story made from the silence, the fear and the art that goes beyond the love.
Finally. A film filmed in this tiny country that my friend wanted to visit. After reading about how conservative it was, I did not end up visiting. Now with this film, I fell in love with the characters and the visual aesthetic aspect of the film that I would definitely consider visiting. My partner also enjoyed the film very much. We kept talking about it days later.
