Animal kingdom is contemporary realism, but Mechod entwines insinuations of a Greek tragedy or Shakespearian drama. [Full review in Spanish]

David Michôd for President! In all seriousness, this is a fantastically effective film.

Animal Kingdom is a slow burning, complex, and sprawling crime epic.

Michôd's fatal flaw is creating a movie that rides on the tropes and successes of past crime movies in such a vainglorious manner, that he forgets that sympathetic, or even interesting characters make or break a film.

Animal Kingdom not only serves as yet another fine addition to a growing canon of Australian crime dramas, but also now proudly wears the bloodied crown of "King of the Jungle" in terms of tension, menace and impact.

A compelling, astounding and beautifully executed crime drama, supported by vigorous performances by the entire ensemble.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Aug 13, 2018
The film has the best two or three opening and closing minutes of anything nominated for an Oscar this year.

... extremely powerful. [Full review in Spanish]

Chilling yet brilliant.

Wild, gritty, and sharp, Animal Kingdom has a ticking bomb for a heartbeat that pulsates through every scene.
| Original Score: B+ | Sep 9, 2017
But honestly, the film is lame.

Artful to a fault, straining so hard for Shakespearean import it saps whatever life and energy there was to be had in this familiar, low-stakes tale.

David Michôd's sensational directorial debut Animal Kingdom (2010) reinvigorated my faith that Australian cinema is capable of truly profound complexity.

...the sort of movie that one admires more than one enjoys...

Seldom is a debut feature handled with such assurance and intelligence

Ben Mendelsohn steals the show. This man portrayed the most subtle creep I've seen on film in years. Animal Kingdom is a must see.

Animal Kingdom is frequently shocking - not just because it makes Air Supply's 'I'm All Out Of Love' sound cool.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 28, 2012
Just as the protagonist announces from the outset that crime doesn't pay, in Animal Kingdom grime doesn't play.
| Original Score: 63/100 | Jul 11, 2012
A diverting conceptual fictional crime family pic.
