Another Earth Reviews

Mar 29, 2025

If you enjoy thoughtful sci fi this is for you. Especially for an independent film, the limited special effects are cool. The main character is played by one of the co-writers, and she does a great job.

Brit Marling gives an authentic performance of simultaneous strength and fragility, and the script, which she co-writes with Mark Cahill, is somehow both intense and understated. A conceptual sci-fi that explores the ‘what if’ of the existence of another Earth, through a woman’s attempt to find redemption following a tragic and unforgivable mistake. The poignancy of the impact of tragedy on the main characters is made bearable by the possibility that the mysterious ‘other earth’ might somehow offer new hope. Marling’s work, as ever, is a wise and delicate balance of the paradoxes of existence.

Beautifully shot and heartfelt.

I love this film. It’s original, beautifully made, some nice cinematography & sound and just a nice thought provoking dive into these subjects , especially like the ending.

I know I am bucking the trend of most reviewers, but I just love this movie. It's not really a sci-fi movie - it's a chimera of sci-fi, emotions, sadness, melancholy and a whole lot of other things. Brit Marling is excellent as the emotion-wracked young student who makes a major mistake once in her young life and experiences the maelstrom of emotions and decisions that emerge from that one mistake.

Another Earth has been a favorite since I saw it in 2011. After renting it twice, It became a must purchase. Brit Marling and William Mapother are AMAZING! The sci-fi element is there, but it takes a back seat to the intense drama of the main characters story. This made me a Brit Marling and Mike Cahill fan! Watch this movie and be ready for more of a drama than sci-fi.

A brilliant and thought-provoking film that is both sci-fi and drama, contemplating the impact of a sort of multiverse existence while also examining the unexpected consequences of one mistake made, and how redemption might be found. Moving and profound with a final scene that gives me chills just recalling it. One of my favorites.

I feel like the premise was damn interesting, but the movie went off the rails trying to bring in some drama / repent storyline between a victim and his perpetrator. It felt completely unnecessary against the background of having a mirror planet hovering over your planet. Missed chance in my opinion

The most typical, cliche pacing of an independent movie. The Nickelback of the independent movie style in every way. A lot of walking around and thinking shots. I mean a ton. Story is...yeah fine. I mean she hit the world's happiest and most pregnant family out there. Basically they were trying to hard on a very long movie that could have practically been a short film. The actual interesting story, the other earth, gives you no answers at the end and we have about 30 seconds of her and her 'other' looking at each other. Zero answers 'cause that would be hard to write I guess. Would not recommend.

There's a little bit of a bait-and-switch with the Sci-Fi title and promotional materials here, but it gets a pass because it's an indie with an alleged $100k budget. It's an ambitious movie that would've benefited from expanding a little, but it's also understandable that the plot's focus would remain on Rhoda (Brit Marling) and John (William Mapother), the former who sent the latter into a 4-year coma (and killed his wife and children) during a drunk driving accident. The concept of "Another Earth," which can be seen by the naked eye from "Earth One" ignores the geological and metaphysical effects of the two planets being so close to each other. Moreover, it was boring that the beings occupying "Earth Two" are exact replicas of "Earth One"? I suppose, this permits the feel-good ending, but probably not what most viewers are coming to see during an indie Sci-Fi. The best moments of the film come from the shots of Rhoda walking along the Connecticut coast with "Earth Two" as a beautiful big marble in the background. Rhoda's… relationship with John is extremely fucked up and I'm not sure if that was the intent of the director (Mark Cahill) here. I was shocked with this script and think it went a step too far. It's an RT (66/66) right now, and I'm right there with them.

The way the story was presented I found a little hard to follow. It wasn't cohesive. And I like endings that actually end the story. I had to google to try to figure out what Rhoda seeing her other self had to do with anything. That part still makes no sense to me.

Slow-paced, intense, touching, though-provoking, symbolic and incredibly inventive story. Amazing soundtrack. Very good acting. It's first of all a tear-dripping drama, the exciting and highly symbolic (albeit not very believable) sci-fi part of the story is just lurking in the background.

She kills his wife and kid in an accident gazing at the "other earth" while driving intoxicated. Upon release, she becomes his cleaning lady, then falls for him. And you plod into an ending that tries to surprise...

A very impressive indie film by a new filmmaker. This is one of those thought-provoking films that will stay with you long after it's over. It was impeccably co-written by Brit Marling - who's also the lead, and co-written and decently directed by Mike Cahill, in his first full length feature film. The fact a new filmmaker took this vision and gave us this beautiful independent little gem - on a 100k budget, is incredible. This is better than some films I've seen lately put together by seasoned filmmakers. It's not your typical sci-fi, but it will spark the brain and move your soul. It's a muted story of atonement and forgiveness, in a quietly moving parable of redemption from the choices we make. The ending was perfection, as it answers that question you'll have, and leaves something extra for the imagination. The cinematography was excellent, and the score absolutely fitting and amazing. Casting and performances were spot on. My only issue was Cahill's annoying and pointless fast zoom-ins, and the unnecessarily slow pacing, that made the normally pleasant 92 min runtime feel much longer. But nevertheless, for a new filmmaker on a limited independent budget, this was a gem to watch. It's a well deserving 8/10 from me.

I would not classify this as a science fiction movie at all. I thought it started out well, but seemed not to go anywhere much. I also hated the ending.
