Anthropoid Reviews
I’ve never written a movie review before so bear with me. Anyone rating this move low because of the broken Czech accent is childish. The movie was made palatable for English speaking audiences while including a type of immersion many are not familiar with. Not to mention being made by an independent filmmaker. The film maker, Sean Ellis as well as others, wanted Anthropoid to be big. This movie was insanely ahead of its time, from the pacing, to the cinematography, to the acting, to the production value itself. Looking back, we don’t get a translation for the German language which throws you into the shoes of the parachutists even further. This movie is a hidden gem, and one of Cillian Murphy’s best films. I am in awe. This movie evoked raw emotion from me after not taking it seriously. This movie portrayed a tragedy within a tragedy that I don’t think many people are aware of. I loved this film, dare I say it’s in my top 10 of all time.
Film ruined by incomprehensible dialogue. Why not use authentic Czech if you're trying to make it more authentic, rather than a hybrid of English with heavy dialect which just made it too difficult to easily understand
This movie recounts true events of which I was not aware. It was well acted and definitely deserved a bigger box office than it achieved. Seeing the work that went into the making of this movie makes you wonder how they achieved it for the small budget.
In many ways it is a shame that the talents of the Czech movie industry aren't a bigger feature of this otherwise engaging and well-presented movie. The dramatisation of the assassination of SS General Reinhard Heydrich - the 'Butcher of Prague', is masterfully handled by SE, and brilliantly performed by both CM and JD, and the cast. A lesser told milestone of WWII, this has the source material, power, cruelty and malice, and the historical significance to have been the subject of a dozen movies, if not more. Thankfully, this is a stirring, engrossing, and sombre telling of it
The conflict between hope and helplessness within the characters is a war of its own.
Cillian Murphy does a fine job of making this lesser told WWII story of Czech soldiers trying to oust the Butcher of Prague from their homeland. There's spots in the middle that drag...but still worth a watch.
This has to be the most underrated World War II movie of all time. There are so many unknown amazing stories from the war and I’m glad that the creators decided to shed light on this one. Amazing action and amazing drama; great movie!
ANTHROPOID is a competent war drama that favors historical accuracy over Hollywood flair, depicting the complexities of war-time occupation, and conveying the commitment and heroism of the Czech Resistance without unrealistically glamorizing their sacrifices.
Difficult to understand dialect in a dialogue heavy film, bland to look at, not much happens. Ending saved it.
I had never heard of this movie - I came upon it 8 years after it came out. It's an excellent movie and really important these people's immense sacrifices be illuminated. It especially illuminates the horrible sacrifices made by people who sheltered resistance members. They and their talented, beautiful, innocent children were brutally and sadistically tortured to death by the Germans. It wasn't a huge box office success but it will stand the test of time better than many of the more "successful" movies of 2016.
A beautiful depiction of the heroism of soldiers and civilians and their sacrifices to stand up to evil during one of the most horrific times in our history. The humanity of and vulnerability of each character is profound and moving throughout. The cinematography and original score makes the picture all the more heartbreaking and powerful. Highly underrated movie made on a small budget. Great example of how far talent and heart can take a movie without a big budget. If the movie doesn't break your heart you should see somebody
this movie shows just how many INNOCENT people died because men can't talk things out but instead-want to play war-it makes me sick and it's still going on and has been since the beginning of time. i don't like the actor named Cillian Murphy except in the 'very last' scene and it would have been more realistic if everyone hadn't had clean, ironed clothes on and perfect hair
Historical. It's very intense movie based on true story.
Solid performances, sad story.
Not usually interested in war movies, but this was more about ending war. This true story is about people who gave their life to end the life of a horrible man with a horrible "solution" to the "Jewish problem."
Really a great movie. I watched it a few times. Very well done.
While portions of it were hard to watch, it was a subtle reminder about the atrocities of war and the German occupancy of Czech in this one while they tried to survive and the rest of the world looked on.
I found this movie deeply interesting. Historically speaking, yes, but also cinematographically. It treated about a period of the WWII that I absolutely had no idea it ever existed and I'm happy to have learned more about it (even if it's different in the movie). But, in terms of cinematography "Anthropoid" was genius. It was nicely filmed especially during the shooting scenes (in the church, it was WOW). The story was differently constructed from normally, but was well-done and coherent even if some things were certainly predictable. Actors were great and they were really able to make you feel strong emotions. In brief, what I loved was the subject treated, how beautifully filmed it was, the story, the actors and to see these people fighting for their country even if it kills them. I loved it!
Engrossing and apparently accurate recreation of a WWII story I knew very little about. The commandos were very brave men and their story deserves to be told.
