Apocalypse Now Redux Reviews
More like apocalypse now!
“Heart of Darkness” tale set during the Vietnam War. A nightmarish fever dream and a cinematic masterpiece that still grabs me by the throat every time I watch it.
Martin Sheen's best work.. epic masterpiece!
Didn't like the original or this redux
It is a truly remarkable piece of art, unlike anything ever created before.

A nightmare within a dream. This film is an incredible experience and one of the most ambitious projects ever filmed, risking life and sanity to create something beyond scope and compare. A masterpiece.
Did I ENJOY this? I am not sure if I could say that. It is very dark, overly long, and really weird. An officer is tasked with going up a river on a gunboat and taking out a colonel that has gone rogue. Along the river, he has many strange encounters that seem to indicate that war is chaos, and everyone is in on it (Lord of the Flies for adults?) There is a solid cast and excellent cinematography. The movie has some very iconic scenes. That all said, 'redux' was WAY too long, and the weird non-sequiturs were a bit too much - we are not really supposed to be watching Monty Python. But I think the idea is this is less about the Vietnam war (we don't even get a Vietnamese perspective here) and more about how maybe we think we are better than the people we are trying to 'save', but that the reality on the ground is quite different. And that reality basically causes everyone in the movie to go insane.
It definitely isn't for everyone, and the film does feel longer than the theatrical cut does. However, I still thoroughly enjoyed "Apocalypse Now Redux" and thought it was just as much an iconic masterpiece as the original version was.
Where do you start with a movie such as this? For starters, the soundtrack which is an incredible mix of classic rock hits from the Vietnam Era. The actors who give a phenomenal performance, especially the more minor roles of the movie, such as an early Lawrence Fishburne or Harrison Ford. The plot is based off the book Heart of Darkness, the story of which is set in a different time and place but inspired the movie nonetheless. The story of Colonel Kurtz and his ascension into madness along with Captain Willard, who is tasked to stop him, is an unusual subject. The story that follows, as Captain Willard narrates his thought on the mission give you an insight into just what this mission means for the Captain from beginning to end and how he nearly fell into the same madness as his target, Unforgettable and I highly recommend this movie.
Slow and dull film. Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen's performances are too gestural.
A brilliant film, spoiled by the extra footage which makes Captain Willard seem jokey and a good bloke to have a beer with - which he isn't. Watch the original, not this. Still head and shoulders above 90% of all other films though.
It doesn't matter whether or not this movie is longer or shorter than the theatrical cut. What matters is the quality, and the quality is amazing. It's easily one of the best war films and has one of the most haunting experiences ever.
If the original was great, this is awesome. They managed to get it better, with all of its 56 extra minutes of runtime
River trip on a mission. Too long, for what was involved.
First version was a masterpiece, this final version it is just a longer masterpiece.
A psychological, psychedelic and hellish dive into humanities' relationship with The Vietnam War. It is a pure fall into the abyss of a chaotic psychosis and shows the destruction of humanity and how one gets lost and could easily become an animal at any second. Essentially it is either Everything that makes you want to hate or everything that makes you want to instead, live and love and move on passed the war. In this movie most become consumed and become the victim.
It doesn't matter what form it's in, the concept and cinematography are some of the best ever on film. The filmmaking and the performances are so good. The journey is better than the destination, but how could it not be. Final Score: 9/10
I saw this again with my family who had not seen it and I wanted to revisit it to see the redux version. They were impressed despite the much of the new content that they felt seemed out of place. Some of the content did add some depth to the story and tied it back to the book "Heart of Darkness". I may just stick to the original though. We did this as a precursor to the documentary on the movie, "Hearts of Darkness" and it was helpful to have done it to remember its impact. This movie is powerful and effectively uses "Heart of Darkness" themes in relation to Vietnam. It is unnerving, but purposefully so. It is not one to be taken lightly when choosing something to watch. It does demand respect for the endeavor. It was on Netlfix.
