Aquarius Reviews
This is sad to say, but this might be my favorite Brasilian movie (I dont know that I am moved by City of God, for example). The ending is just a formulaic resolution typical of turn of the century (and earlier) western European cinema. But the scenes, the family story, the tension you cannot avoid as you wonder what is going wrong in the background, are rewarding.
Good setting and script. But it's slow.
No script, long scenes of dubious relevance to the story. More than 2 hours punishing the audience.
Kleber Mendonça delivers a rich tale about the many nuances of the brasilian society. Even if the movie could be somewhat better paced, it's value is undeniable - as is Sonia Braga's excellent performance.
Aquarius é um filme que nem se quer, presta atenção como ele representa certas realidades brasileiras. Aquarius exige luta e muita dedicação quanto na ficção e na realidade também. Sonia Braga tem uma personagem muito forte e destemida em Aquarius.
A very commanding performance from Sonia Braga leads this magnificently photographed foreign film. The initial impact made by the interesting premise is significantly subdued by lengthy and irrelevant characterizations that don't support the main story/theme the filmmakers are trying to show.
Such a powerful film, both in the message it conveys, as well as the acting. A top 10 film of the past decade. Truly beautiful.
An important picture for a time that really needs it, this allegory of resistance wouldn't be the same without the unforgettable, quiet and very resonant perfomance from Sônia Braga (perhaps the most famous brazillian actress in the world). It is a must-see movie for every person in Brazil, because it shows the reality of our world right now (and before, 'cause we haven't changed a bit, sadly) and Kléber Mendonça Filho has a talent that has to be noted today and everyday. The paradox between past and future, poor and rich, old and new is the light of the screenplay and it is a shame that this was not the brazillian entry for the Academy Awards...
I'm not sure if it's the movie itself, or the main character, Clara, but I found this to be too earnest. The conflict that propels the plot doesn't take over the movie, and it doesn't become too ridiculous, thankfully. In other words, it doesn't get in the way of what this movie is: a character study of a woman and her home.
An insightful look at family relationships, aging, loss, corporation greed, and identity, anchored by a powerful lead performance from Sonia Braga.
Filmão, a história de uma mulhe que não quer deixar seu ap onde morou a vida toda, mas é muito mais do que isso, interpretações fodas, Sonia Braga domina. Amei o filme. Trilha sonora bela.
Sonia Braga's performance in Aquarius, who carries the film on her back, should be praised. However, Mendonça Filho produced a film that, besides being confused, seems to have no other intention than to have the old man litigated with the new one, but only manages a tangle of confused plots and average performances.
A very basic plot, and two hours and a half of film that does not go anywhere in particular. I had patience and I reached the end, but so many scenes could have been cut out to the benefit of this nice work. Shame.
A great story, yet the film won't suit the general public's taste, it takes more than just staring at the screen to fully comprehend what conflicts are being showcased throughout the movie.
A masterpiece of Brazilian cinema, extremely elegant and original, a powerful film that must be seen by all lovers of quality cinema.
Admirable, candid and mostly keeping saccharine sentimentality at bay, this is an engaging little story about how practical, usually financial, concerns can pretty ruthlessly eat into human relationships, full of loose ends, and with a triumphant pay-off that leaves everything unresolved.
