Arthur Newman Reviews

Jan 28, 2024

I am a big follower of RT reviews and use it as a guide for viewing movies. But I was stunned when this only receives 1 star.Movies can be rated on several points. In this case criticism was warranted. But what grabbed me about this was how believable the two leads were .At the end of the movie you could see how damaged they were, how believable.Cant say that about most movies

I watched this on a DVD which was titled "Arthur & Mike", but it's definitely the same movie. Don't be put off thinking it's about golf, because it's not. It's one of those slow reveal films where the viewer is dropped into an unfamiliar situation, and then by accompanying the characters gradually figures out who they are and what they are up to. When executed well, as it is in the case, this approach is very effective at engaging the audience and making fairly ordinary events seem interesting. I thought the film was very well made, making subtle use of a broad range of cinematic and dramatic techniques. Once started, I had too see how it ended, but of course just as the film has no real beginning, it also has no end either! It's just a time slice in the characters lives, where you get to see part of their story. I enjoyed the film, and found it interesting to watch, and would recommend it.

I very happily didn't finish it, only annoyed I had it on in the background long enough to leave a bad taste. So many 'off' things about these lying fake age-inappropriate people, and not enough to make me want to find out any more about them. Yuck. Putting me off Colin Firth actually. Did he just accept the role so he could snog the much younger Emily? Booo

I watched this movie only because of Emily Blunt to see some of her earlier work. Here, she stars alongside the legendary Colin Firth where they basically form new lives and break into people's houses and make love to each other. Clearly not their best work but a very intriguing movie because both of them put on American accents which they do especially well, especially Blunt.

This was very slow. I tried to watch it a second time and it was still slow and boring. Nothing like able. About the characters.

I got this film! I thought it was superb. Great chemistry and good acting. I recommend it as a very low key, on the run, on the road in shady motel america kind of movie.

Two dramatically fine performances by two likeable actors who have screen chemistry. My only problem is, there was nothing really uplifting about anything this film offered. I like both Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, but liking the actors doesn't necessarily translate into a likeable story. Colin attempts to hit the 'reset' button on his life, only to realize that you can't really do that. At least this film didn't have the obvious 'discovery' moment when Colin's ex-wife or son track him down. And, it doesn't have the sweet rom-com type ending when Colin returns to his former life and is fully accepted by the family he left. The film tries to show some of how Colin's son and friend (Anne Heche) cope with his disappearance and presumed death. For that alone, there would likely be a considerable amount of anger present at his return. Most of the movie focusses on Colin's relationship with Emily Blunt's character, Charlotte, who took her sister's nickname, "Mike", because she's trying to create a whole new life for herself. As expected, there's a lot of lying and truth-telling and anger and make-up sex. It's a nice two hours, but don't expect to leave the story feeling uplifted.

Arthur Newman's obviously trying to be a new man! I like this kind of films to watch occasionally. I am not talking about the story, but the type of comedy. Like two unusual characters go on a ride and each one set to rediscover themselves. This one was a bit more than that. It tells the story of a divorced man who is not happy with his life, so decides to fake his death and take up a new identity to live somewhere else. Then he meets a woman who is throwing up her life for nothing. Now these two join hands for an unexpected adventure to an unknown destination. Well, they head towards with an intention, but without the plan to accomplish in a way. Very fun, but not like loudly laughable or even with a little smile. You will get that while you watch it. Both the British actors played the American role, but still with the British accent. They were good, I liked their combo, as well as the characters. The film was enjoyable, but something says it's not all well. It's not the production or the screenplay, or even the directional inexperience. It could be the thematic which was like from pre 60s or 70s. I bet you will remember the title 'Sullivan's Travels' and other similar. Basically, it is not comparable with others, but feels familiar with how everything was developed. So it is not for everyone, but some people might think it is very good. I stand in-between, but I don't know you are one of those, so why not try it and decide yourself. 6/10

This wasn't as bad as the rating indicates.

Wallace Avery(Colin Firth) is a middle-aged manager of a box store. He is divorced from Mary Alice(Kristin Lehman, of "Motive). Together they have a teenaged son, Grant(Sterling Beaumon). Wallace is also carrying on a non-passionate affair with Mina(Anne Heche). Together, that is not enough for him. So, he fakes his own death and takes up the nom-du-renaissance of Arthur Newman, trying to keep a low profile on his way to a career as a golf pro. However, that changes when he runs into Mike(Emily Blunt) who seems familiar. "Arthur Newman" is a pleasant surprise, especially as it favors nuance over any kind of cringe factor in its character study of two truly dysfunctional, yet not hopeless, people. Some of that has to do with the movie's tone which honestly does not avoid the darkness in its premise. But most of it has to do with Colin Firth who is excellent in finding the humanity in such an otherwise lost character.

Good acting, and Blunt and Firth work great together, although it is not a film I would really want to watch again.

A rather miscast Blunt and Firth in and otherwise dull bland insipid road movie. He is Arthur which is an ailias and she is Mike. Nothing realy happens all

Really enjoyed it. The cinematography was beautiful and the romance between the two characters is beautiful.

Cannot believe how two popular actors could waste their time accepting roles in such a below standard film. Very disappointing !

A well done character driven film I thought. A little bit fun a little bit sad.

Review: I found this storyline to be weak and a bit silly. If your going to fake your own death, surely your going to change the way you look and try and keep undercover. Anyway, the director really didn't think the whole storyline through and the acting, from these 2 A-listers, wasn't that terrific. The way that Colin Firth's character thoroughly planned his own death to become a golf pro, ditching his son in the process, was a recipe for disaster right from the beginning and when Blunts character was added to the mix, it just made things worse. The love story was predictable and the ending was very sketchy. Basically the director left it up to the audience to make up there own mind about Firth's character returning to reality, which could have been written much better. Anyway, I did loose interest halfway through the movie and I struggled to keep my eyes open. Disappointing!  Round-Up: Colin Firth's career really does have it's up and downs. After winning the Oscar for The King's Speech, which he did deserve, and starring in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, he hasn't really starred in any major roles. With the release of Before I Go To Sleep coming out soon, maybe this will bring him back to the limelight. Emily Blunt seems to act the same in all of her movies, but she has been cast in some big budget blockbusters. From The Devil Wears Prada to the Edge Of Tomorrow, I doubt that this low budget movie will damage her career. As the movie is based around these 2 characters, there isn't that much to say about the rest of the cast, but I was expecting something better from these 2 major stars.  Budget: N/A Worldwide Gross: $208,000 (Terrible!) I recommend this movie to people who are into there dramas about a man faking his own death to work in a gold club. 3/10

This one went under the radar. But Colin Firth, & Emily Blunt are perfect!

1 Star for Colin Firth and 1 Star for Emily Blunt Satisfying performances from the two but didn't get to like how the movie played, its like chasing and pursuing something but ends with a big question mark. 2 Stars!
