Asteroid City Reviews
Plus: Good actors and interesting colors I guess. Min: Pretentious and very boring, lost me after 20 minutes.
Entertainment that entertains, visually impresses, pays homage to theater, television and cinema as a whole, all with the signature of acclaimed director and screenwriter Wes Anderson, who decided to “theater”, “television” and “cinematograph” in Asteroid City.
The two layers of reality, the existential crises the characters experience, trying to put science, religion, and the motivations of the alien into context, its a fascinating movie that rewards multiple viewing. There is something slightly Cronenbergian about this film, which I love.
Terrible. $30 nap for me
really never want to miss any Wes Anderson movie. So many characters, so many stories, such great acting. loved the movie within the play setup.
Boooooooooooring!!!!
It's not what I expect to see in cinema.. The only good in this movie is scene with Scarlett.
Just saw Asteroid City and overall a nice simple Wes Anderson production. Lighting and the shots were focused on a way were while it was a monotone perspective, also focuses on making something out of an ordinary phenomena or circumstance, in a place where uncertainty and vigilance were common amongst average neighbors and colleagues . Overall the movie was incredible and as it didn’t go above and beyond and truly felt authentic to put a perspective on the casting process in a screen play, and bring the radio/live theater production behind the movie camera.
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City feels like a beautifully arranged charcuterie board: it looks amazing, but you can’t help but question why there’s a lone olive next to a random piece of cheese that seems out of place. The cast is packed with big names, yet it feels like half of them are in a completely different film. The humor is so dry it could leave you parched, and the emotional moments are so subtle they might as well be in Morse code. Asteroid City is a work of art if you’re a fan of Wes Anderson’s unique style, but if you’re not, it’s just a pretty screensaver with a bunch of famous people awkwardly hanging out in the desert. 3/5—would watch again, but only if someone explains the alien part to me.
Fantastic cast, really striking visuals, all wasted on a script that has no destination and even then struggles to find a path to get there.
A different kind of movie than I thought this would be. It's pretty good though.
I didn’t get it !! I think this is a stylised movie that polarises viewers. You either love it or hate it. Maybe I was too tired to follow the storyline, but then maybe therevwas no storyline.
Holy smokes, now this was easily the most fun I’ve had with a movie all year. Like his best works, Asteroid City is another visual masterpiece from Wes Anderson that’s carefully handcrafted with so much love and attention to detail with no frame wasted. Each scene expertly captures the 1950’s americana iconography with so many physical props, catchy music, colorful costumes, and set pieces that blend together the rustic western, flashy consumerist, vacationer route 66, pulpy sci-fi aesthetics of the era. So many great actors are in this movie and are all clearly having a blast with the little parts they all play together to add to something greater as the movie’s tone and aesthetics are the true main character of the story. Pleasant surprise to see Tom Hanks and Steve Carell join the Wes Anderson alumni cast. The plot may be thin and loose, but the meta playwright framing clearly make this more of a deconstruction of this era of filmmaking and American lifestyle, as well as Wes Anderson’s signature storytelling style of purposefully awkward stilted quirky admirable choreography. Especially with the profound “You can’t wake up if you don’t fall asleep” sequence that is essentially the movie’s mission statement. The Jeff Goldblum puppeteer alien was adorably awkward and a pleasant surprise cherry on top of the movie’s already fun quirky momentum it has been building up throughout the movie. The movie doesn’t have much going on, and yet it has such a hypnotic hold on your attention with its densely packed sequences of what’s essentially paintings in motion. It’s like a delicious soup. Each ingredient may seem small on its own, but the sum of its parts creates something absolutely delicious that will fill your heart and stomach to its full content. I just finished watching it and already want to watch it again to see what I missed, it was that rewatchable. Easily my favorite Wes Anderson movie since the Grand Budapest Hotel.
One of the odder movies I have seen but that’s what makes it so great!
Easily among the very worst and, beyond any doubt, pointless films I have seen, and probably will ever see. The pathetic attempt to make something artsy falls spectacularly flat on its face, insulting even the lowest of intelligences. A tremendous cast is totally wasted on a non-existent story which is drowned in ridiculous dialogue. If this was supposed to have been funny the joke is totally on the viewer. What a pile of garbage.
Wes Anderson's latest offering seems to trade much of his trademark quirkiness and sharp dark humor for a collection of disjointed stories. Instead of the narrative driving the distinctive "Wes Anderson feel," it feels as though the aesthetic itself has taken center stage, with the story merely serving as an accessory. While the visual style remains unmistakably his, the lack of cohesion and emotional depth leaves the film feeling more like a tribute to Anderson’s past works than a fresh, engaging addition to his filmography. Fans of his earlier brilliance may find themselves longing for the wit and heart that made his previous films so memorable
This movie is horrible, not funny, and has absolutely no point or direction to it. Couldn’t tell you what it’s even about, complete waste of time. Has a crazy cast that gets completely wasted on a movie that tries to be “artsy” but realistically just sucks. Keep scrolling if this movie comes up on your tv.
😴😴 *SNORT* Wha- wha-... eugh-eugh... nodded off a bit there. Sorry that was SO boring. Yeah the movie barely had any development throughout the plot. Barely any action, etc.
