Babe: Pig in the City Reviews

“Babe: Pig in the City” is a wonderful family motion picture that touches various topics, but doesn’t live up to the power and overwhelming brilliance of the original.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 26, 2022

It's a bracing shot of inspiration: the darker it gets, the more important kindness becomes. It could've been made yesterday.

| Nov 5, 2019

It's so beautifully designed and everything looks like it's from a storybook.

The audience isn't coddled, and the film doesn't talk down to anyone. We are, all of us, subjects to unbearable emotions, and Pig in the City is a rare film that more or less encompasses all of them.

Babe: Pig in the City is one of the most subversive films ever marketed to children.

| Aug 22, 2017

A brilliant, grotesquely underrated family film criticised at the time of its release for being too dark for young audiences.

| Mar 1, 2016

Has no small amount of merit, especially in the areas of production and costume design, but... [not] in any meaningful way a successful or even appropriate follow-up.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jun 17, 2014

Carries its predecessor's torch into darker, quixotic territories, bursting at the seams with folkloric witticism and hellzapoppin' imagery.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Nov 12, 2012

Darker than the original, not for very young kids.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 16, 2010

It's George Miller's masterpiece, maybe even the best commercial film of 1998.

This is the stuff of Dickens, told on the scale of Blade Runner and Brazil, with the madcap spirit of The Great Muppet Caper.

| Original Score: A | Jan 15, 2005

An amazing accomplishment. George Miller brings the same approach to this sequel as he did with the Mad Max trilogy: Don't re-make, re-invent. A work of genius.

...Paints a bleak picture of humanity. Not to mention, shall we say, animality.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 8, 2002

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 21, 2002

Despite its G-rating, the movie includes numerous scenes of animals in peril, including a pit bull that nearly hangs himself, a crippled dog that gets thrown into a wall and a goldfish that almost suffocates... Happy holidays, kids!

Babe needed a sequel as much as Citizen Kane or Casablanca.
