Bad Hair Reviews
Whenever I watch horror my fascination is the actual gore. My favorite horror genres are Body & Revenge and in some way Bad Hair encompasses both.

In his quest to create a fable about Black women's hair, Simien overlooks the actual function it plays in Black women's lives, opting instead for a superficial finger wag about the value and importance of natural beauty.

A banal, sepulchral tour through the failures of the Black male imagination supported by an industry that bleeds Black folks for inspiration but doesn't care for their very humanity either.

Praise, Rip Taylor! Camp is alive and well.

I love this movie. It is so weird -- small, strange, and fun. An unabashed B-horror movie, but it's got a lot more on its mind.

Simien's efforts are valiant and, above all else, wholly original, so when he decides to ramp Bad Hair into overdrive, it's easy to forget about his unintentionally hollow metaphor.

But while the comedy aspect of this Sundance standout works in parts, the horror of it all suffers from knotty reasoning and an unclear thesis.

By playing coy with what the notion of good and bad hair means to its owners, Bad Hair fails at the kind of Black experience-related relevance Jordan Peele wrung out of Get Out.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 23, 2020
If Bad Hair feels overstuffed and ultimately slight when it comes to its central conceit around hair, at the very least it's still a fun ride.

Despite the potentially heavy (or heavy-handed) material, "Bad Hair" is self-consciously and pleasingly campy...

More humorously incisive than truly terrifying... Simien creates space to discuss the ways in which women enforce unfair standards of beauty on each other in a white patriarchal society, using the horror genre as a blunt but effective tool.

There's a good movie in here - if anyone finds it, please let me know.

"Bad Hair" is a good idea buried within a scattershot, ultimately mediocre movie.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 21, 2020
The movie is creepy and realistically good, which says a lot about the real-life horrific things women go through to have "acceptable" hair...
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 20, 2020
The film has an exciting, lived-in quality that elevates what are otherwise some markedly unsteady attempts at horror.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 19, 2020
[A] satirical horror film with big laughs and some genuine scares.

The horror-comedy from the creator of Dear White People, however, doesn't quite stick its landing.

With echoes of camp, B-movies, '80s hip-hop, and female empowerment films of that era, Bad Hair is stunningly ambitious, and that overwhelms most of my issues with it.

... despite the great acting and nuances of Black womanhood, especially as it pertains to our relationship with our hair... Bad Hair doesn't quite know what it wants to say, leaving its audience stumbling around for answers.

Unfortunately Bad Hair never makes a clear stance on whether or not the movie is about how the achievement of those aesthetics divide the community, or if this is a fight against the status quo.
