Bad Lieutenant Reviews
One great classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Catholic guilt is spread on thick like Nutella on toast. As usual, Abel Ferrara loves to demonstrate the depravity of morality in the common human. Honestly, I prefer Ms. 45 over Bad Lieutenant, but this movie is filled with the in-our-face emotional strain. And it's crazy to see Zoë Lund appear in a small role as a drug junkie in this movie, as she also shared screenwriting credit with Ferrara and also appeared in the lead role in Ms. 45.
Just great! One of Keitel best acting.
The best film I saw from the 90s. And the best performance by Harvey Keitel I've seen. Raw, disturbing, and even a little funny at times. It's also ironically the best film that maps out the difficult Catholic concept of forgiveness and redemption.
I had high hopes considering the "expert" reviews but it got longer and longer during the last third. Harvey Keitel is a decent actor but definitely cannot carry a movie on his own. Watch if there's absolutely nothing else on.
Although, at this late date, BAD LIEUTENANT is a dated production, it's still a a very good [and very unusual] story with a killer performance by a great actor (Harvey Kietel) and certainly worth more than one watch! ✨🥴👍✨
Harvey Keitel is excellent here. There's very little else to say as the title kind of does the job for you in an understated way. The lieutenant is really very bad but he eventually feels some forgiveness before karma catches up with him. Shot in a grimey way that feels late 70s rather than 92 ish. Has a feel of Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. No surprises but worth a watch as quite short. Saw it on Prime.
Brilliant performance. A totally gripping film. The main character's breakdown is classic cinema. A superb production.
Keitel crazy hour(s). Yes, gets pretty nasty here, giving it all.
an accurate depiction of the gambler's/drug addict's desperation and loss of control, and the abuse of power to feed both...he doesn't want to be the man that he is ....it's powerfully accurate and it makes some people very uncomfortable watching it.My favourite Keitel performance, oscar worthy imho,if the subject matter wasn't so distasteful. If you Like Harvey Keitel, this is his best work
This film leans more towards character study than beginning/middle/end but is still worth a watch. It featured on a list of "underrated crime films of the 90s". It may be, if it wasn't for that list I wouldn't have ever reached out to see it. The exterior shots of New York are gritty; this is New York before "Friends", after all. There are gratuitous shots of Harvey Keitel doing drugs and not very much of the nun - the story wasn't about justice for her but the redemption of the corrupt cop. I could have done without the ending, to be honest. After watching Carlito's Way last weekend, where a similar ending left me feeling for Carlito but I didn't feel the same for Abel Ferrera's unnamed cop. I feel like it would have had made more sense for him to shoot the two rapists, throw his gun in the bin (and maybe his badge?) and just keep walking. Still, worth checking out for fans of crime and cinema. Left of field and some tough scenes to watch but still serves as a stunning alternative to the big names in crime and action at the time.
Keitel is a good actor. This is just a silly man's film.
Harvey Keitel had a pretty mad early 90s. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, and of course, Bad Lieutenant. You can never accuse the guy of playing it safe when it comes to the films he chooses or the performances the gives in them. Watching BL was a very strange performance. It's one that Keitel is clearly committed to, playing the character like his water supply is going to be shut off is he dares to underact at any point. Much of the film had a slow pace, and some scenes are in dire need of editing down. The dialogue can be repetitive, and the frequent backdrop of Baseball commentary left me confused, since I don't understand the sport. The theme of redemption is definitely there, as are those of police corruption and familial neglect, but the film ends on a fairly unsatisfying note, and it would have been beneficial to show us more of our lead at work, instead of just wandering in and out of crime scenes. The controversy it's attracted was inevitable, and I think its reputation might have been inflated as a result, but it's a powerful film that, when it's not languishing in misery, gives a thoughtful and raw depiction of police corruption and seeking redemption, though I could certainly have done without the weird noise Keitel makes whenever he's in despair. That, in all honesty, is probably the most disturbing thing about it
A movie that exceeded my expectations in every way. Harvey Keitel's acting was, as usual, exceptional, the storyline was fluent and captivating and the gritty old times New York atmosphere was something special.
This movie was so slow and boring and barely anything significant happened, except toward the end and at the end which I did like. It made it more dramatic but that wasn't enough to save this movie from me being let down. I normally really love Harvey Kietel, he's a great actor and acted good in a few scenes and carried much of the movie. However the film didn't hit hard enough for me and I am not motivated to see it again.
A man's moral decay into the demons of gambling, sex & drugs. Keitel plays Mr. Cop, law and order but in reality he is in a downward spiral. Thorn is a raped nun who forgives her vicious attackers. As usual in this type Jesus appears as a hallucination. I swear they cut a scene out with the 2 girls Kietel pulls over as the version I watched ended with "I do something for you, you do something for me" but I remember he masturbates to the girls watching him, which was cut on the TUBI version. (my old neighbor was a psychiatrist MD at a top rehab outside NYC and they used films with the addict, I told him to use this one. About 6 months later he said it was approved, along with 9 1/2 Weeks)
This movie is aimless, wandering around unsuccessfully searching for a plot.
The nameless lieutenant (Harvey Keitel) is a New York City detective working on a case involving the violent rape of a nun in a church. However, his days are spent on the relentless pursuit of sex, alcohol, drugs and gambling as he spirals out of control. Director Abel Ferrara effectively creates a palpable sense of malice and squalor, an urban nightmare that is sure to end in violence and death. But the reason to watch the film is the electric performance of Keitel, perhaps the best in his distinguished career, as the cop on a profound downward trajectory into a life of addiction and despair.
This is one of the films with a powerful, abusive, lonely, desperate and confused central character. Harvey Keitel is the core of the movie. His acting is enough for you to watch it. The unique style of Abel Ferrara is seen in the movie.
