A tasteful and well made biopic on one of the artworlds big stars.

The cast is stellar, but the film ends abruptly, almost as if Schnabel ran out of steam.

I think the directer (J. Schnabel) did an excellent job capturing the vibe of the NY art scene in the early 80s. Since he was part of that scene as a painter, he prob. knew the characters pretty well. While the film isn't perfect, I though Jeffrey Wright did an amazing job at portraying Basquiat.

Yes we all know the ending, and his life, but still watchable. interesting casting. Should be more artistic energy and internal psychological conflict expressed. I feel this is fairly bland at times.

As Jean-Michel Basquiat's fellow painter friend, Julian Schnabel's autobiography of the 80's graffiti artist turned international sensation is disappointingly pompously elliptical and frustratingly equivocal, overlooking the suggestive dichotomies in his artworks and his heroin addiction that led him to his early death.

One of the most artful films that I've seen. Love David Bowie, Dennis Hopper in this. Jeffrey Wright truly personified Basquiat. Wonderful...!!

Wednesday night movie... I like Basquiat's work ....A lot of big stars in the movie including Bowie, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, Benicio Del Toro ....

Hate to burst any of your pretentious bubbles, but Basquiat was a no-talent junkie whose "art" was nothing more that drug-induced grafitti, like particularly childish vandalism. Andy Warhol was another such dull, overrated hack on the 1970s and 80s New York "art scene," glorified by adoring and equally-untalented groupies with more money and drugs than brains. Granted, Warhol acquired a few actual mundane pre-press production skills in his short life, while Basquiat remained what he always was: an unskilled, uninspired maker of messes. Surprisingly, this biopic portrays Basquiat and Warhol as they actually were: Vacant, vacuous, and void. Which makes for a particularly shallow flick that does not glorify the "legends" so much as throws them under the bus.

Intriguing and stylish but ultimately it's too sad to be enjoyable. I would have appreciated a closer look at his artwork. Best bits are when David Bowie is on screen playing Andy Warhol quite brilliantly.

Love how they nail Warhol and use Hopper to maximum effect in a CREEPY offbeat way.

as obviously flawed and ham-handed as it is, i still sort of love this movie. the general story and the factual esotericia sprinkled throughout overrides most of the awkwardness. showed it to the kids this weekend, which worked out much better than I feared.

Oh, the 90s. A time when being insufferably self-righteous about your art in lieu of all else was the only way to be. "Basquiat" over simplifies some very human issues in favor of deifying the plight of the struggling artist. A ham-fisted and emotionally simplistic takedown of fame and success. Bowie and Del Toro are great, though.

Der Kunst-H?ndler Rene Ricard (Michael Wincott) versprach Basquiat auf einer Party, ihn zum Star zu machen. Basquiat schloss Freundschaft mit Andy Warhol (der von David Bowie so markant gespielt wird, dass ich nicht selten meinte, Bowie sei Warhol!). Drogen geh?rten zu Basquiats Wesens-Kern und Warhol war einer der wenigen, das zu verstehen. Sein bester Freund aus alten Zeiten Benny (Benicio Del Toro) dagegen, liess Basquiat fallen, wegen seines Selbstzerst?rungs-Triebes. Vollkommen offensichtlich für jeden, dass Basquiat Schwierigkeiten hatte, aber eben auch, dass er nun endlich ganz in seiner eigenen Welt lebte. Julian Schnabel ist ein intimer Kenner der New Yorker Kunstwelt (wir sehen seine eigenen Arbeiten, die im Film einem Künstler zugeordnet werden, den Gary Oldman spielt). Durch die Besetzung von Dennis Hopper und eben Bowie scheinen sich Filmebene und Realit?t zu überlagern. Schnabel hat auch ein feines Ohr für Basquiats Verfehlungen: Basquiat wird beweisen, dass es keinen einzigen nennenswerten schwarzen Maler gebe. Basquiat war Künstler, in seinem Urteilsverm?gen, im logischen Denken lag er falsch. Sein Wahnsinn nahm best?ndig zu; am Ende trug er h?lzerne Schuhe mit der Aufschrift "Titanic".
