Battle of the Sexes Reviews
This Movie just feels off in every way. Sure it's based on a true story and depicts what happend, but i just feel like it's looked upon in the wrong way. (Not saying I can do better, just my opinion). The male chauvinism was very clear from the getgo and was talked about every 10 minutes. I get that that's the point of the movie, however we are bound to get the message after 3 or 4 times, but 15 just feels like its forced down our throughts. The acting wasn't astonisthing, but there wasnt much to work with given the viewpoint/writing of the movie. I also think that the time period in which the movie takes place is pretty uncomfortable and not nice to look at (as i am not from that time period). But that is my problem. TLDR I feel like the director approched the movie at the wrong angle. 4/10
Stone excels in highly enjoyable film. King's story more interesting than titular battle though it is well filmed.
Dayton and Faris seem to love the early 70s aesthetics more than anything else in this story, which at times comes at the cost of the characters. That said the best thing here is how inevitable King's victory always feels, which makes Riggs' antics all the more pathetic.
Entertaining enough. Stone & Carrell are good in the lead roles but could of done with a stronger script to work with.
This movie may not please to everybody's taste, allthough for the ones that enjoy real life stories retold in the form of movies, this becomes an absolute must see as it compiles light humour, a lot of emotion and adrenaline. Overall an awsome movie!
This is an interesting story - a true life one at that and it features some good performances from both Steve Carell and Emma Stone. The actual match its about only features in a minority of scenes, so if the thought of watching a lot of tennis puts you off the film, I'd say that's not a valid reason to not see it because the majority of the plot focuses on the two players opposing views regarding equality etc. and lifestyles. I thought this was quite an insightful watch and I would recommend it, yes.
The casting for the Battle of the Sexes could hardly have been better. Emma Stone is the picture of dignified radiance as Bille Jean King, and Steve Carrell is the perfect vehicle for Bobby Riggs' clownish boorishness. Some well choreographed tennis action is interspersed with the engaging character moments that Stone and Carrell create, and this adds up to one of the better sports dramas to come along in a while.
LOL, the funniest 02 hours: and 01 minute based on a true story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an awesome movie! And once again, it proves that real life is stranger than fiction. The performances from everyone is exceptional, but Emma Stone truly stands out from the rest. What a nuanced depiction of a great person. Technically, the movie is also brilliant, from the writing to the design, it's all top notch. I would recommend it to everyone.
I enjoyed this movie overall and the story it told about the famous tennis match in 1973 between the up and coming Billie-Jean King and the retired Bobby Riggs along with issues going on in that time period
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Emma Stone Steve Carell were perfectly cast in my opinion.
¨Battle of the sexes¨does not only offer entertaiment for un hour something but also offers one of the best Emma Stone performances, letting her shine in this half drama, half comedy connected necessarily with today's events.
Although the script is sometimes a little corny, it's a quintessential dramedy; it's worth watching, because not many people know about Billie Jean King's impact on women's sports.
Emma Stone and Steve Carell are terrific. 'Battle of the Sexes' is an interesting look on the famous tennis match from 1973 between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. I'm sure it takes all the usual creative license that biopics tend to do, but that's doesn't bother me - especially with this type of event. Stone (King) and Carell (Riggs) are definitely what hold this film together, without those two I don't believe it would've been as enjoyable. Sarah Silverman (Gladys) and Andrea Riseborough (Marilyn) are alright, though the main attraction here are the two leads. Talking of Marilyn, I didn't really care for the love stories on show - with Marilyn, but also those involving Larry (Austin Stowell) and Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). The rest is sufficiently entertaining, though. It's sometimes a little too on the nose with the (obviously positive) message it's portraying, but that's just a small thing to note. Overall, this is a production I'd recommend you watch - tennis/sports fan or not.
Quarantine Movie Review (QMR) #3 Film: Battle of the Sexes Score: 6.5/10 Review: Based on a true story, Battle of the Sexes recreates the historic match that occurred during 1973 between the two world renowned tennis players Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). The story follows Billie Jean King, who was a former tennis world champion with many achievements to her name, regarded as one of the greatest women tennis players ever to exist. Brilliantly played by academy award winner Emma Stone, we see Billie Jean King's struggle and her fight for the cause of equality and proper treatment of women in the sports community and in general . The film also shows her struggle as an LGBTQ member and how she has to hide that part of her life. We also follow Bobby Riggs who also was a former tennis world champion who had achieved a lot of success as a professional tennis player, played by Steve Carell , we see his destructive addiction to gambling and his backward mentality towards women. He is shown as someone who is very talented in tennis because he was, but due to his bad habits relating gambling and trying to earn a quick buck, and comments surrounding the place of women in our society, caused many backlash and controversies surrounding his name. The film explores more heavily on the romance that occurs between Billie Jean and Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough), we are shown scenes of them bonding and developing feelings for each other, and we also see the tension that arises due to this relationship which was forbidden at that time. The rest of the cast also provides good atmosphere to the film, but nothing super special, but Sarah Silverman who plays Billie Jean's(Emma Stone) manager, provides an energetic vibe by her role. There are about 2 or 3 proper tennis matches throughout the run time of this film, in which they probably should've added 1 or 2 more considering it is marketed as a sports/drama film. But there's more importance given to the romance aspect of the film, which was good too. The costume design by Mary Zophres in this film was absolutely gorgeous, there was actual care given to the look and feel of the movie which made it even more interesting to watch. The 70's vibe and energy is definitely given care and attention to in this film. This film does pack important social messages about how feminism isn't about placing women atop men or disregarding the role of men. It tells how underprivileged women are in basic steps of life and how we must fight for the right to equality as well as providing a sub message of how we must be free to love and be with however we want, and it should not be considered as a sin or a crime. The film does not tell us accurately what happened after the events of the film, there had been some big changes in the personal lives of Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. But it definitely was a fun film to watch with good social messages and a respect for the struggle made by women and how it changed much of the public perception of that time. The fight for equality is still being fought and must be supported with all participation. 6.5/10
Well made biopic with an important topic. I just wish they would have spent a little less on her hidden sex life than they did, and more on her fight for equality.
