Beasts of No Nation Reviews

Oct 21, 2024

Idris Elba was robbed at the Oscars, this was a masterful performance by him. His character is terrifying in ways other evil characters are not, because there is a layer of honesty and realism his performance brings. He is not just a comical evil dictator trope. Amazing movie that everyone should see at least once.

I don't remember it being this good. This is simply one of the best war movies I've ever seen. Brutally realistic. Nothing is watered down

waaahouuuuuu this film is just fantastic and sickening. we dive into this film which evokes the events that the countries of West Africa suffered with the war and all evoking the key word the involvement of children in the war

This film represents what I couldn’t even dream of in a nightmare. It's almost soul destroying but I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a pertinent depiction of what is going on in the world, and you NEED to watch this, and hopefully feel compelled enough to do something to help, however big or small the gesture may be.

The movie is amazing, but you have to stomach the brutality. It shows how horrible and devastating war is, especially with child soldiers in Africa. The child actor playing Agu is astonishing, so is Idris Elba as the Commandant.

A stark, sobering, sombre tale of manipulation, brainwashing, abuse, and corruption, all in pursuit of a misunderstood, genocidal lust for power. The subsequent crippling of generations is given little thought, and is shown here brilliantly on the shoulders of a young cast, supported by a strong performance from IE. It masterfully brings together some of the darkest elements of humanity, whilst showing what strength of spirit and resolve can help us survive and overcome. Hope is often an undervalued concept, but it's one with life-changing power even in the most maniacal, empty, violent of places

No es una película de acción, sino una historia realista de salvajismo incrustado en la inocencia antes de que tengan la oportunidad de ser niños deben de tomarlas en el campo de batalla

One of the most well-made, difficult to watch movies of all time, it is a travesty that Idris Elba was not even nominated for an Academy Award. Simultaneously harrowing and gripping, Cari Fukunaga has secured himself a position amongst the best directors of the modern era.

Innocence is the first thing you lose when you experience the horrors of war, especially when you're a child! We see the inhumanity of it through the eyes of Agu, a war orphan who loses everything and is consumed by the barbarity of a civil war under the tutelage of an oppressive commander. We see as it chips away at his humanity until there is only a hollow shell of a person yearning for peace!

Wild story, that happen in Africa in real life. I recommend that film.

An outstanding film featuring a remarkable storyline. Filming and assembling such a movie is a daunting task, but they executed it in a remarkable and impressive manner. I strongly recommend this film; you won't be disappointed!

What a masterpiece and the fact that people are living like this in my country where there is war everyday breaks my heart

Incredible movie, must see. Very valuable since United States audiences do not get a lot of exposure to stories capturing African conflict or struggle.

One of the better war movies ever. Simple viewers will find all the outrage material they need, while mature viewers will see layers of complexity.

What is the point of war? This movie asks that question of the viewer and leaves it for us to answer. It is a disturbing film in that war is seen through the eyes of a child turned killer turned child again.

Finally it seems we are getting ever closer to seeing better representation of black Africans. Hotel Rwanda was great but still largely shaped by whites and reluctant to show more than the so-called "un-stereotype" (albeit for understandable reasons), resulting in little nuance among the characters portrayed in the film. Not the case in this film, for it shows the complexities, as well as atrocities, of war and offers hope for reform and reconciliation. Too often films portraying war, especially in Africa, focus solely on the atrocities and treats the characters as one-dimensional brutes with no sense of remorse or reflection (i.e., strip them of agency). Both Elba and Attah are magnificent here. One issue I had is the lack of women's presence, but otherwise it's a stellar film.

A harrowing and realistic portrayal of child soldiers. Stellar performances and and directing.

Fantastic, grueling, and emotional. This movie should have got some Oscar noms. Edris Elba is incredible in this role, one of his best performances imo.

Very few movies will stick with you quite like Beasts of No Nation. I watched this one night randomly on Netflix and became entranced. When it ended, I was emotionally drained, yet hopeful. I am not kidding when I say scenes from this movie will stick with me till the day I die. A masterclass in writing and storytelling. Idris Elba delivers an incredible performance, making you love him one scene and hating him in the next. The mostly younger cast do an incredibly good job. Not for the faint of heart, but if you're up for it, it's an absolute must watch.

A haunting and awe inspiring meditation on the horrors of child soldiery in subsaharan Africa, this film contrasts the dreamlike nature of childhood with the nightmarish injunctions of a confusing war. Indris Elba is absolutely phenomenal as the Commandant, a leader of a group of rag-tag freedom fighters whose morals go out the window by the whims of his maniacal search for glory. Abraham Attah plays Agu, a young boy whose family is massacred and who retreats to "the bush" for survival- soon he is picked up by the Commandant and his band of NFC guerrilla warriors. They strip him of his boyhood and replace it with an obedient nihilism so deep that one is truly affected by the scenes of transitions as he murders and uses drugs. What will life be like after the war when the commandant's existence is tied to the glory of looting and annihilation? As a study of child soldiers universally and the political complexities of war in general, this is a masterclass in filmmaking. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga is once again (True Detective, season 1) hitting home runs with brilliant cinematography and editing choices. The soundtrack by Dan Romer is exceptional ambient scorin. The whole film reminds me of the Pulitzer Prize winning photography of Carolyn Cole in Monrovia, depicting something that, even when explicitly rendered with sincere artistry, is unimaginable. I await to see what Abraham Attah has in his future as he is a great actor, especially for his age.
