Before I Go to Sleep Reviews
Director Rowan Joffe has made a stylish looking movie but allows it to get bogged down by repetition and too-tame performances.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the majority of you will have it figured out rather early on.
| Original Score: 2.5/4.0 | Sep 2, 2020
The film started out slow but ended in way that didn't feel drawn out or rushed and that's pretty surprising for a film that's about hour and a half in runtime.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 11, 2020
Before I Go to Sleep is entertaining, accomplishing effectively what it sets out to do.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 6, 2019
A persistent score keeps emotions and tension running high while nebulous titles and grainy video footage evoke the faded and partial memories so crucial to the secret-ridden narrative.
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 25, 2019
Lumbered with the job of adapting a readily disposable summer read, Joffe applies the bare minimum of verve and panache required to lift Watson's hackneyed story of amnesia off the page.

Before I go to Sleep is a solid psychological thriller which works on many levels. It is a taut, succinctly-told story that keeps you guessing throughout its concise running time, thanks in no small part to its three protagonists.

There are limits to how much control the men directing can exert.

Before I Go To Sleep is yet another wannabe sex-thriller with the kind of maddeningly vague premise that studios love because it gives the audience absolutely nothing to go on, thereby nullifying any expectations.

The principal three actors play their parts well and there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes, just leave all thoughts of comparison out of your mind, this is not Memento and nor does it need to be.

The film ends up being an overly emotional film which focuses an astonishing amount of time on watching Christine cry.

A perfectly serviceable thriller, with a few good twists and some properly frightening moments.

Sleep is expressly designed to make you a nervous wreck... Frankly, the film does all this awfully well. But working against it is an enough-already-we-get-it finale, plus a sense that we haven't been pulled into Kidman's plight as much as we could be.

There are a lot of decent jolts and pregnant pauses that build to an unexpectedly emotional ending - there won't be that much new if you've read the book, but it's still an intriguing premise all the same.

Ssuperbly acted and, for much of its intricately plotted length, grips like a vice.

What went wrong in this adaptation?

It takes only 90 minutes (it seems longer) to get to an ambiguous ending that is typical of the cynical way mysteries are scripted nowadays.

...seriously lackluster...

It was better when it was a comedy starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

This is 50 First Dates-dark, but lacking that film's humor, characterizations, dramatic interest, and consistency.
