Before Midnight Reviews

Apr 26, 2025

The first movie was pretty good, this movie is horrible. Endless endless endless meaningless dialogue. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. That was a recap of the entire movie. NOTHING HAPPENS, just words that go nowhere, mean nothing. I would have said spoiler alert but there is nothing to spoil

A perfect third part for this series. To be honest, in the beginning I thought it would be a disaster (like many directors make to close a trilogy) but this one was perfect. It ended in the best possible way. Recommended.

Before Midnight - 8/10. Richard Linklater makes his third film in the Before series with Before Midnight, a movie that follows Celine and Jesse into marriage and post parent life. Its an interesting movie, but, one that feels very different from Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Its a movie that is real just like the first two films, but, is real and raw in the pain and anger that a married couple might have. As a huge fan of the first two films, it was a little disappointing to see the two characters fighting and bickering for much of the movie. Its a darker film than the first two movies, focusing on conflict and marital issues. As a hopeless romantic, I really wanted to see a movie of the two happily married and just enjoying a trip in southern Europe. But it ends up being an uncomfortable watch. Mind you though, the movie is still awesome, but it pales in comparison to the first two in my opinion. Its the most emotional film in the trilogy, in terms of the heat of the anger shown on screen. If you loved the first two films, you might not like this movie. But, its still a great time seeing these two amazing characters back in a story.

Linklater's decision for a more formalistic style of storytelling in contrast to the previous installments though it may seem foreign, feels much more appealing and enjoyable. <i>Before Midnight</i> takes a more realistic and sometimes cynical approach to love, and if there's one thing Linklater does right it's the realistic portrayal of character development in the trilogy. With the growth and passage of time comes higher stakes and thus a more mature dialogue, which is perfectly shown in both sequels.

Two hours of dialog - most of which is arguing.

It's refreshing to revisit these characters all these years later and reveal that things aren't perfect. It's still this same couple we've come to love, and the conversation is just as deep and realistic as it has been from the beginning. Only seeing things from the perspective of a couple that have grown weary, but still love each other is wonderful.

I hated this film when I first saw it, I just thought that it was just two hours of these characters arguing. It was only on rewatch that I finally appreciated it as an important part of the Before Trilogy and just as good as the other two. The best way to look at this film is how Linklater himself described it once, the only way that they could do another film and keep it realistic. Before Midnight is a perfect epilogue to the Before Trilogy and a wonderfully made film.

When people talk about the great trilogies... they must not forget the Before series. Star Wars and LOTR are big and legendary and I love them, but don't sleep on this trilogy either.

Expected it to be a fairy tale, like the previous ones. But Man! it looked like a down to the ground true story.

It simply couldn't have ended any other way. Brilliant. Funny. Smart. Tough at times. Do we need a 4th instalment? Maybe. But if it were to never be the case, this would still be the best ending to Jessie and Céline's on-screen love story.

Maybe it's me, but how does this movie adhere to plot structure? These characters never gave me a reason to care about them, so why would I be engaged? Watching an entire movie as one long act, listening to a couple fight, had me hitting the fast forward button. Granted, I didn't watch the previous movies so I didn't know what I was getting into. It's not like I am into sappy romances or the obligatory happy endings, but I think there's a much more interesting way to portray the angst of midlife existential crises. Obviously, I'm in the minority crying out, Did you notice that the emperor has no clothes?

A classic and quality ending to the trilogy. Real enough gripes about middle age are played out and the acting as with the first two films, is top rate. Watched on Prime.

"Before Midnight" continues the realistic and heartfelt journey of Jesse and Celine. The film explores the complexities of long-term relationships with honest dialogue and authentic chemistry. Balancing joy and pain, it provokes introspection and offers profound insights into love and the passage of time. With its deliberate pace and relatable portrayal, "Before Midnight" leaves a lasting impact.

I can't say I "like" this installment. It's gritty, and honest. Like so many, I didn't envisage the couple ending up like this. I guess it's just too close to reality. I can't bring myself to watch it again. I want better for them. It left me feeling like there is no hope. It's so tragic. A miserable end to a beautiful story.

It is a painful film to watch due to its verisimilitude with reality, especially for those who have followed the saga since then, but it is a brilliant script that makes the viewer reflect on the idealization of love and life. It's unbelievable how the script, the acting and the soundtrack manage to capture the essence of this saga that triumphs over simplicity and viscerality at the same time. It ends the saga in a masterful, intelligent and, above all, real way.

Richard Linklater completes his 'Before' trilogy reuniting Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as Jesse and Celine Jesse and Celine have rekindled their relationship after 9 years and have two daughters after their last two encounters They spend summer vacation in Greece reminiscing about how they first met and wondering how things would've turned out differently Jesse is a successful author while Celine is changing careers thinking about working for the French government She's tired of being the do-gooder and he wants to continue to be the one she fell in love with Time has developed wounds between them though Like the last two films it entirely rests on the two leads and their amazing chemistry The first one was about a spontaneous encounter instantly clicking with someone you meet but ultimately you go your separate ways The second one was contemplating whether or not the romantic flair was still there and where it could possibly go Here it's about whether or not the love can be fixed for good Bringing realism into a relationship, what happens when we face death together, and just doing what we need to do rather than being around one another can be a form of love in itself This emulates a lot of what real couples go through with the deep conversations and an examination of what people in their 40s go through Love, marriage and long-term commitment are several of the perspectives seen here The final scene has both of them finally unload their baggage and it is intense with great character complexity Ultimately Linklater looks at a story of consequences; getting together is easy but staying is hard, love is imperfect but it can be real too Is there such a thing as happily ever after?

"Before Midnight" is a fascinating movie because it is nothing like the other two. This movie is much more bleak and realistic and less romantic than the two films that come before it. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy give great performances and this movie is essentially a series of well-acted and realistically written conversations, so it never really felt like I was watching a movie. The movie is a lot to take in, but it is intelligently made and a unique conclusion to this trilogy. Overall, this trilogy is consistent and each film brings something completely different to the table, and this chapter was full of genuine and honest surprises.

This is officially my favorite trilogy of all time. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy have the best chemistry i have ever seen, those long takes really feel like a natural situation everyone could been in. Richard Linklater just puts a camera somewhere and lets those two talk to eachother. My heart was beating so fast, are they really going to break up? Is this what they were worried about? But thank god she still wanted to move on. It was so intense seeing those two for the first time having a big fight on screen and thats what made it so impactfull, we have been following them for 2 decades with only beautiful conversations and the way Linklater directed it, was masterfull. I could watch these two talk for hours and hours about the most random stuff and never feel bored. This marks the end of the trilogy and i couldnt be more impressed with everything, this is one i will forever think about for the rest of my life.
