Knightley and Ruffalo are both so likable and loveable throughout with a perfect amount of grit and realness. Great script, beautifully shot. There should really be more films of this caliber.

An uplifting ode to pre-covid New York City. If you still have faith in a world where good things happen to good people, then this movie might be right up your alley. Mark Garofalo carries the film as the disenchanted music producer, searching for inspiration. Holly Steinfeld and Keira Knightley have a nice chemistry. It’s a guilty pleasure..

I love this movie. The songs are great. Wonderful acting. I smiled the entire time. It doesn't go in the predictable direction and instead, is a very smart movie.

Begin Again - 8.5/10. John Carney crafted the perfect romcom musical with the highly underrated and overlooked Begin Again. A movie about an aspiring musician and a down and out producer who sees the potential of the artist, Begin Again is a sweet and charming movie as a whole. Its one of those movies that just flies by as you watch it, coasting on its simple story with amazing music and amazing performances. Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley are super delightful in this film. Even though both are big stars in their own right, they really do feel like normal people in this film. Their respective performances are real and very subdued. Its also one of my favourite "New York" films. The way Carney directed the film in and around NYC is super brilliant, creating the city as almost another character in the film. You feel immersed in the journey of these characters and the music that they make, and seeing them record the tracks live around neighbourhoods in the city just livens up the film even more. This is a film thats a perfect example of how to use your locations to emphasize the story. Its also a perfect example of how to make a musical without the artificialness of breaking into song randomly. The songs are placed within the narrative and they don't hinder the flow of the plot. It also helps that Knightley sang all the songs, as it lends an authenticity to the performance that wouldn't have been achieved had it been someone else singing over her. One of the best and sweetest films from the past decade, a film that needs to be watched if you have never done so!

One of the worst films I've ever seen. Ruined my night. Extremely disappointing. First of all, as a "comedy", it is not funny. And as a romantic film, it's not really romantic. Also, the music is not that good to be completely honest. The actors are amazing I do love their performance, it's just the storyline is way too dry and dreadful. Please do not waste your time to watch it.

Just one of those somewhat conventional movies about the music business and breakthrough artists and broken hearts that just hit the right tone for us, with lovely songs, competent protagonists and great dynamics - with a touch of past/present in the beginning that didn't overstay its welcome.

It is really frightening that so many people like this movie or the music contained within. I am a medium level musician, no big talent, and I can prove to anyone at any time that I can write songs exactly like the ones in this movie 10 times a day with no effort whatsoever. It is completely formulaic, idiotic lyrics, three chord commercial garbage. The story is absurd, the dialogue is inane. This movie is so dumbed down and reading comments here is making me realize that as dumb as I am I must be way smarter than I think. This movie is entirely idiotic on every level. People, I am so sorry but if you find this to be quality entertainment, you are a blockhead. But you're probably happy. NYC on location shooting gives it an extra half star.

This was such an exceptional movie with great acting and storyline. Mark Ruffalo was excellent as usual. The ending was such a nice twist. It's definitely worth the watch.

A good movie with a spectacular soundtrack, "Begin Again" commits to original music and authentic performances. This movie is unafraid to tell this story in the way it wants, drawing out certain scenes and performances longer than necessary, but if you're engrossed than you don't mind. In a movie with a lot of music, I would not have objected to hearing even more of Keira Knightley.

The film demands that this kind of cliched hipster fantasy be enduring but it only becomes increasingly more frustrating and grating as it goes on.

We mostly liked this movie of second chances, but with all the F bombs it was sometimes difficult for me.

A beautiful movie with some great music. Highly recommend
