Beginners Reviews
A wonderful, touching and clever indie film.
Arthur the Jack Russell: ally, dog of few words, Oscar-winner.
brilliant.. loved the movie soo much.
Beautiful film about a father and son relationship starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer. Plummet's character comes out of the closet after his wife of 40 plus years passes on, and begins living the life he longed for his whole life but his advanced age and health don't give him too much time. Meanwhile McGregor's character has his own struggles finding love. Really wonderful performances from the leads as well as Melanie Laurent. Touching, funny and the style of storytelling is quite enjoyable and whimsical.
With a past shrouded in sorrow, Oliver (Ewan McGregor) is having difficulty finding joy and satisfaction in life. After his mother's death from a terminal illness, his father Hal (Christopher Plummer) decides to pursue his personal happiness by coming out of the closet, only to be diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly afterwards. Oliver finds solace in the arms Anna (Melanie Laurent) and his father's dog Arthur (who steals every scene), but finds that overcoming emotional hurdles is no easy task. As always, director Mike Mills provides the audience with fresh insights into relationships and gives us characters that feel like they should be difficult to relate to, but somehow aren't. It is fresh, original, and no where near as depressing as it all sounds.
Writer/Director Mike Mills' family-centric drama carefully treads familiar territory in this stirring multi-generational heart-warmer.
The best acting performance from Christopher Plummer!
A very heartfelt story. I love everything in this movie, especially the incredible father-son chemistry between Christopher Plummer and Ewan Mcgregor.
I decided to give Mike Mills another go after connecting so well with C'mon C'mon and thankfully this one hit nearly just as hard for me. Mills displays the same affecting emotional touch, easily drawing me in with some moving cinematography and creative, yet relatable, characters and dialogue. The score also works quite well, adding pleasantly noticeable weight or feeling on multiple occasions. Any day, or even moment, can represent another "beginning", and these hopefully keep occurring over the course of a long, meaningful, and happy life. 8.5/10
This movie was absolutely beautiful! This is true storytelling that people from different walks of life can relate to in some way.
A diverting enough story about a family coping not only with the fact that their elderly father has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer but has also come out as gay. A fairly gentle comedy made bearable by the touching father-son relationship portrayed on screen by Ewan McGregor and the always watchable Christopher Plummer.
It's kind of your "typical" indie drama, boosted by some strong performances by the entire cast. Plummer, a seventy-something-year-old man comes out as gay to his son (Ewan McGregor), who apparently has always run away from love, teaching us how is never too late to try, to love... harder. It may go up to Melancholy Hill too frequently, but it also has some cute, touching moments.
I liked that it was off-beat; I liked the dog and how he behaved and "thought"; I liked the back and forth between the now and the past; the relationships were honest and, sometimes, touching. There was good humor and some laughs throughout as well as some meaningful interaction between the characters. I'm a crummy reviewer.
watched this movie originally to honor christopher plummer & it did not disappoint at all!!!! i was so surprised how aesthetically awesome & gently written for lgbtq representation it was. one of my new favorite movies no doubt thanks to Mike Mills's direction & screenplay, Ewan's & Melanie's magnetic chemistry, & of course, arthur the jack russell with subtitles ;-)
Hands down one of the best films of all time, without a doubt top ten of the past 15 years. Such nuanced characters. Spectacular script, direction, acting, cinematography, all around gem. A Must see
An entertaining film about some Angelenos.
it's sweetly sad and great for a change of pace. It's not very realistic and some of the things that happen don't really make sense, but it's a touching story.
A romantic comedy that was actually really enjoyable, in which a graphic designer is attracted to a free-spirited woman, while memories of his father encourage him to follow his heart, inspired by his father's bravery after his late revelation that he has terminal cancer and that he was gay all along. A very moving and entertaining story that highlights the importance of being sincere about who you truly are and being accepted for who you are. Excellent performance by the amazing veteran actor Christopher Plummer, who after a long career finally received his Academy Award in 2012.
