Behind the Candelabra Reviews
Solid watch, nothing crazy but nothing bad. Something about the ending felt anticlimactic. I think Michael Douglas did really well in his portrayal as well.
I watched this on DVD recently. I did not know much about Liberace, except that he was a successful pianist. This biopic attempts to fill in the back story, but in some ways I think I was better off not knowing. The film contains much more homosexuality than anything else, which seems a little one dimensional. Was Liberace really like this, or is it being exaggerated for cinematic spectacle? Either way, it's not exactly wholesome family entertainment, and I did not like most of the film for this reason. I checked on Wikipedia, which gives a more rounded account of Liberace's life.
Una película impresionante, que sin desviarse del tema no se enfoca tanto en la controversia que rodeo a liberace y se enfoca más en mostrar los matices del amor
Musical biopics have become the bane of my existence in the last decade or so, but Soderbergh's Liberace film consistently hits all the right notes almost with fail. Perhaps because Lee was such a unique and outrageous personality, it doesn't feel as tried and methodical as so many of the others. And the fact that Soderbergh is one heck of a filmmaker doesn't hurt matters either. Douglas is such inspired casting here, and his performance doesn't disappoint. He deservedly was showered with praise and awards. But I'd like to make special mention of Damon, in a somewhat thankless role as compared to the grandiose main character. Damon is sensational here in probably the more challenging role - certainly the role with the biggest physical and emotional arc. Both Douglas and Damon have wonderful chemistry together. And I would be neglect not to mention a small but hilarious turn from Rob Lowe as a plastic surgeon - this is a career highlight for him. The ending is a bit maudlin for my taste, but that small limitation aside, this is easily one of my favorite biopics in recent years. Adept in both its dramatic and more comical scenes, had this been released theatrically, I think it would have been a major Oscar player.
This movie is nothing about his music career at all. This movie is only about his sex life. THATS IT. Totally junk
The director said all major Hollywood studios refused this film because it was “too gay”. Cowards! Liberace should be a third character in ‘Vicious’.
I think this is one of the best performance by Michael Douglas. This was really easy to watch for this type of biopic. The focus is of course not about music. Could be a little bit disgusting yet glueing.
Micheal Douglas 9/10 Rest of the movie 6/10
Despite the greatest (and rewarded) efforts of its protagonists and the careful, opulent, aesthetic, this bio-pic does not exceed the conventions of the genre and, although it works well, it ends up being disappointingly expendable.
Fabulous but I would I have much preferred these roles go to openly gay actors. I do love this film and think that Michael Douglas nailed the part. I think that Matt Damon was completely the wrong choice for his role (it should have gone to a much, much younger and openly gay actor) but he still did a decent job at it. Definitely a very fun film to watch!
Some agent or friend needed to say to both Matt Damon and Michael Douglas, "It doesn't matter how good the money is. Do not do this."
It plays mostly like a typical biopic, but it's two lead performances are dynamite. And it does an excellent job of showcasing a toxic couple who are both in it for the wrong reasons, while still having genuine affection for one another. It's the type of relationship story that needs to be showcased more, even if just for precautionary reasons.
Terrific. First and foremost, I have to admit I knew nothing about Liberace - other than his name - before viewing this, therefore I don't know how much of it is accurate, made-up, exaggerated etc. That didn't stop me enjoying it, though. Michael Douglas (Liberace) and Matt Damon (Scott) do do a lot of the heavy lifting, both of them give tremendous performances - especially Douglas. They actually worked very well together, perfect casting. I found Rob Lowe amusing in this, not sure if I was supposed to but I did - not in a negative way in regards to Lowe, just the character of Dr. Jack Startz. Debbie Reynolds (Frances) and Dan Aykroyd (Seymour) also appear, two well-known people playing relatively small roles. The film looks great, it perhaps lasts a little too long when all is said and done but it didn't hamper my enjoyment all that much. 'Behind the Candelabra' is a very good biopic.
It's a predictable yet unexplored trope on the movies I feel, and the movie handles it with enough charisma to entertain, but it also may lack any real depth.
Excellent movie and acting, Mike Douglas and Matt Damon are just brilliant I have seen this twice and highly recommend watching, I remember watching Liberace growing up and he was a magnificent performer and talent. Everyone has their struggles and demons in life which both characters express perfectly.
Great Writing: 2 Stars Superbly written and written for the screen. Its only set back is its quick advancement through time. Great Production: 2 Stars A great production, everything was a puzzle piece fitting perfectly in place with moments of cinematography masterwork.
when you have a sad face.. Behind The Candelabra The structure of the plot line is exhaustingly similar to any other biography that haunts you for the whole runtime as the work that went behind the stage is admirable. The adaptation is too lose for it to bind each and every episodes of their life that is depicted in here. Steven Sonderbergh is definitely no short on execution but is restrained on going to different places due to a narrow wafer thin script. Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are brilliant in it and is supported nicely by different familiar cameos. Behind The Candelabra is an open love letter by Steven Sonderbergh to the world projected in here that has one and only one strength i.e. stellar performance.
