Behind the Sun Reviews
Maravilla
Families feuding in the badlands is upended by a beautiful circus performer. This short story is well paced and atmospheric. A very good foreign language film. Watched on DVD.
They did a great job drawing me into what was ultimately not a particularly riveting storyline. The pacing, color palette and moments of high stakes action, paired with the relatively brief runtime, did more than enough to make this an enjoyable viewing experience. The plot reminded me of the intense feud that my in-laws have witnessed between their two neighbors who share a driveway with each other as there have been punches thrown over it, but otherwise I didn't think very highly of it because the entire generations-long feud was apparently resolved by the guy just leaving to join the circus. Why didn't anyone else think of that? I should also note that I was much less cynical than I might otherwise have been with this one because of how much work I had to put in to be able to view it. I couldn't find it anywhere with English subtitles, so I ended up on some obscure website whose media player accepted a subtitle text file that I found on another website I'd never visited. I was sure I was gonna have to skip this one and had almost given up when I found that, so the movie had no choice but to be a rewarding experience for me!
This film was very well made. It actually makes you dizzy from the plot to the ending and swings you along for the tramatic ride. deserves the 5 stars I gave it!
Very Brazilian-esque, heavy with their traditions and off center stories that often feel fantasy like.
I really liked the photography and the dialogues in this movie. A long story of revanche is ended by the sacrifice of a young boy. Adoro o cinema brasileiro com filmes de histórias dos reais onde o mais importante é o que acotece na pessoa, as mudanças.
The cinematography in this movie is one of the best I have ever seen... Its mind boggling to me how serious foreign films take the art of film making, Behind the Sun is a movie of revenge and ultimately following your own path and NOT the one that is laid for you...
on a foreign movie watching spree--spanish, argentinean, french, and this final brazilian movie today topped them all.
Tragic, beautiful, poignant, compelling. A well told story not easily forgotten. This was one of the most moving films I've seen in a long time. It's golden colors seem to breathe the very heat of the desert itself, and the cinematography is breathtaking. The actors do a brilliant job with their performances, a fine example of perfect casting . I don't see this is as a story about revenge, or even hatred, but more about one's willingness, or unwillingness, to blindly accept a ritual based on an idea which is not valid. Excellent film!
Set in rural Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, this is a story of an long bloody feud between two families for a piece of land. The cinematography is beautiful, with every shot carefully chosen and edited, setting the perfect ambience for a very poetical simple story. Violence is always cyclical and never ending destroying everyone and everything around it. Even the land has dried off as these families refuse to change their ways. Another excellent piece of Brazilian cinema from the Director of 'Central Station' and 'The Motorcycle Diaries.'
