Being John Malkovich Reviews

Mar 22, 2025

I still think about this movie years after seeing it. The same way Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Amelie haunted me with their avant garde perspectives.

I miss the era when brilliant minds like Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman had creative freedom, and everyone in Hollywood wanted to be part of it. Just the idea of a fiction about entering John Malkovich’s mind sounds so absurd now that only in that time could it have been made. A masterpiece.

Simply one of the finest and most ambitiously realised films ever made.

This movie is total trash. Seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen... Never been so angry and dissapointed in a movie before.

I loved this film when I first saw it. It doesn't hold up quite as well as I had hoped now that I've watched it again 20 years later, but Cusack is still great. I still love the concept of the film. What a unique and original idea!

Definitely one of the most unique films ever made, Being John Malkovich is far more than just a surrealist comedy and asks questions I've never even thought about. This is a surprisingly moving and tragic commentary on love, feelings of inadequacy, and stardom. With Charlie Kaufman's spectacular writing and oddly specific imagery, a great score from Carter Burwell, and wonderful performances from Cusak and Malkovich, Being John Malkovich is a film like no other

The chance to be someone else for a while. The chance to be a famous actor. Mix a little bit of everyday blandness, jealousy and mind control. This is a fantastically funny movie; with the full emotional rollercoaster to pot. So original, it fully merits a rewatch from time to time. Funny, smart, extremely original story. This is human natures most fundamental urges, set out in movie form. This could have spawned a successful franchise of ‘being’ films…Jack Nicholson? Christopher Walken? Ray Winston?

'Being John Malkovich' sure is quite something! Despite not knowing the type of movie that it is, I'm always wanted to get this one watched purely because of the title. Now I've seen it, I'm pleased I've done so. It's strange on the surface, though by the end it's... almost normal? Based on the opening and the genre it's listed under on Wikipedia, I was expecting more of an artsy sorta thing. Pleasantly, it isn't that. Of course it has deeper meaning and I'm not saying I got 100% of it, though in the end it's relatively simple. But impressive and original, no doubt. I love that John Malkovich agreed to do this, I now read that he was apparently "half intrigued and half horrified" when he first read the script - I can see why! John Cusack, Cameron Diaz (took me a while to recognise her) and Catherine Keener are all great behind (inside?) JM. My only criticism is that it didn't keep the humour that it shows when Craig first meets Lester, the 'Airplane!'-esque nature of it fitted so well. Sure, there is plenty of humour in there, but the deadpan delivery of Lester (and Floris, of course) is the most amusing.

Wonderfully weird and full of so so so many obscure details and side characters - I just keep thinking about them pitching this script or coming up with this concept and it mystifies me in a good way. Catherine Keener in particular is amazing and magnetic as Maxine, and of course there’s John!!

Strange , different but great fun entertainment. Better even, second time watching it.

Weird as hell, but worth watching, if you want to see a handful of humane characters and eternal screwing of a shocked mind.

A very strange film to say the least. But intriguing enough at times to keep the viewer entertained. It is a very weird plot but the performances are wonderful. Rating: 8/10

A Classic Drama Fantasy. The editing is masterful as this weaves effortlessly between Fantasy, comedy, drama, and a love "Square" to boot and is super sharp. It's filled with tons of underlying commentary about the concept of an individual and the collectiveness of humanity in a satircal but very clever fashion and highly original. There is truly nothing like this that I can think of. It's such a bizarre concept that feels like it's its own thing and not borrowing from anything. The acting, cinematography, and pacing are all really good. The music is solid also but not neccesarily catchy or memorable on it's own. This is a film that relies solely on it's original idea and lifts everything up with it as the direction is pretty good but not amazing. It can look a little dull throughout and none of the characters are truly that likeable, which feels on purpose save for John. The dialouge can be very quirky at times but it fits for such a unique subject matter. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, Kaufman screeplays, or just very out there original ideas will like this a lot.

Boring and confusing. I don’t really understand why this movie has high ratings!

Wow. This movie blew my mind. It was so weird. Highly enjoyable

One of the most original and imaginative movies of the 1990's and arguably the best movie of 1999. Jonze & Kaufman are a match made in heaven in this whimsical and smart comedy. Must see.

Spike Jonze brings us perfection. I would say it is a fresh but amazingly dense, funny, and slightly dystopian way to express the pain/life we are going through.

LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 52 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very weird and odd movie. The movie itself was ok. What I didn't like is how they were using John Malkovich for their sexual pleasure. That's just stupid, who would do that. At least it gets better and john Cusack at least controlled his body as himself. So that made it a little better.
