One of the few movies, that are simply PERFECT

This movie is a great depiction of the online world and how virtual personas affect our daily lives and our online interactions. With beautiful visuals and loveable characters, this movie makes for a fun and entertaining animated story.

what if Beauty and the Beast but anime with a story focused on online celebrity personas and mental health. great flick and the animation both in the real world and the virtual world is breathtaking.

Suzu is a shy high school girl who has difficulty expressing herself. One day she enters the virtual reality world known as "U". There Suzu finds an avenue to express herself and ends up becoming a pretty big viral star. Meanwhile other high school relationship and family drama ensue. Mamoru Hosoda has a consistent track record of good, but not great films. He has yet to make an awful film, he is a safe bet for a 6 ~ 7 out of 10 film. This one falls as my third favorite of his, underneath "Wolf Children" and "Boy and his Beast". "Belle" is a beautifully animated movie...for the most part. There is some questionable blend of computer aided effects, but since that is saved for a virtual world the characters use, it works out well enough. I am able to forgive the animation looking more artificial, when in the movie the characters are going into a video game. There are also a couple of long moments where there is no animation at all. Scenes where they will just hold on a still frame for about 40 seconds of runtime. Some could argue artistic intent behind it, but it just comes across as lazy. One thing I had to quickly ignore in the movie was the logic behind the "U" universe. In the story, the characters put in these headphones and are transported to their online avatars which are auto generated by the system. The avatars will adapt to whatever condition the real person is in. The way this video game works in this world makes absolutely no sense. We never see what the people in the real world are doing when they are in this virtual reality world. Are the characters actually throwing punches, singing or dancing in the real world, or is all being done telepathically? Eventually I had to just abandon any attempts to make sense of it. In my head cannon their bodies are completely still as their minds get transferred to their avatars, like they're entering the Matrix. This movie surprised me. I have seen a lot of retellings of Beauty and the Beast and seen a lot of animated films in general. I know how story beats go and am typically pretty good at figuring out where a story is going. But this film did a good job of subverting my expectations. I won't go into much detail, but there are characters and plot points that I did not see coming. And with all the movies I've seen, I give kudos to movie that is able to genuinely surprise me. Is it the most coherent and well put together story? No. But with the characters, creativity and emotion put into this, there certainly is beauty.

Animation was decent if you are looking for a disney anime vibe. Some of the more subtle scenes are striking. Beauty and the beast though? Ruined it.

最初のbellが鯨の上で歌ってるシーンが物語のピーク、Uに中にログインする際にSAOの様なフルダイブの様な描写があるのにbellはリアルでマイクを握っていたり、登場人物にも謎が多すぎる。 bellが少年を助けに行こうとしてる時に知らない土地へ行こうとしてるのに誰も着いて行く気配がない。ゲーム内でもアバターを剥がしてリアルの姿を暴く装置があったが、運営公認では無くスポンサーが着いてると理由だけで正当化されていたのが意味がわからなかった。サマーウォーズの方が設定面などで矛盾が少なかった。

The animation was FANTASTIC! I loved the character designs as well. The songs were all amazing, especially "Gales of Song" and "U Parade". The plot was the weak point-- it was good, but it felt like there was a lot of information left out. For example, we spend almost half the movie in the World of U, but not much about it is explained... It would've been nice to have just a bit more exposition about how it worked and what was going on. Still, the animation was eye-candy and I really liked this movie regardless!

I came here expecting to see a retelling of The Beauty and The Beast, instead I got a retelling of The Beauty and The Beast, and an insight on teen angst. I found a performance of great animation, combined with excellent story writing and character development. This will surely become a classic.

I had the opportunity to watch this film for the first time just last night with a friend of mine, and it was visually and musically gorgeous. I sat there in wide-eyed wonder as the story unfolded, completely spell-bound. There are definite (and intentional) parallels to “Beauty and the Beast,” but director Mamoru Hosada puts a modern and unexpected twist on it. At times, I laughed. At times, I outright sobbed. This was a very emotional film, and the English VA for Suzu/Belle was absolutely extraordinary in the role. I almost fell out of my chair when I realized it was her debut role. She’ll definitely go far! Pitch-perfect casting! There were a few parts of the plot that I wish were given just slightly more time to breathe and slightly more closure, but overall this film was a visual and musical marvel. It’ll stay with me for a long, long time! It’s Hosada’s best film yet, and definitely not to be missed! See it wherever, whenever and however you can if you haven’t already!

The animation was amazing, and the sound track is a movie masterpiece. The story of 'Belle' was a touching one, covering topics of depression, abuse and grief that was moving and gave me a deep care for the characters on the screen. 'U' reminded me of the 'Oasis' (Ready player one), an online empire where people can hide behind usernames. Social trends, overnight fame and moderators are noticeable elements. An interesting element in this for me was the 'Beauty and the Beast' theme and the topic of romance, for me they didn't fit in this story line. I also found some of the later acts a little boring in my rewatches. Small Icks aside this movie is moving, unique and is something I would recommend to anyone who enjoys phycology, and teenage drama's.

Incredible movie. Skillfully intertwined explorations of grief, loneliness, trauma, powerlessness, support networks, compassion, and recovery, in a beautifully animated package. If you think the focus was supposed to be on romance then you missed the entire point of the movie.

This movie is amazing and the music is great!

Great movie. I semi knew what I was going into when watching this movie and I found that its nice and easy to follow. It doesn't feel like I've spent 2hrs on my day watching this and there hasn't been a boring moment when I just want to skip a little bit. I saw someone complain that there was to many side stories that don't get resolved but I found that there where only one or two different side stories where you can tell what happens in it without needing to explain it to you. The other review made the movie seem like there where to many uncompleted things in it and that it leave you guessing, I found that the movie is pretty straight forward and its kind of what you'd expect of a beauty and the beast movie.

Anima??o impecável, trilha sonora, temas e músicas absurdas e extremamente emocionantes, arte e visuais criativos, cores absolutamente bem feitos. Tecnicamente um dos melhores ou o melhor filme do Mamoro Hosoda. O filme tenta mostrar 2 histórias, do mundo real e do mundo virtual conectando elas de certa forma e fazendo uma analogia com a Bela e a fera. A história do mundo virtual é muito emocionante e bem feita, já o mundo real confesso é muito boa mas poderia ser melhor. Todo desenvolvimento da protagonista sendo feito por colegas, pessoas que a princípio ela quase n?o fala enquanto que o pai dela só tem algum desenvolvimento no final por pouquíssimo tempo. Na minha vis?o, se a narrativa tivesse desenvolvido a rela??o com dela com o pai desde o início, seja brigando até reconciliar-se em conjunto com tudo que acontece, seria praticamente perfeito. Confesso que tbm gostaria que tivesse mais desenvolvimento dos outros personagens como as amigas da m?e dela e de seus colegas, acaba que eles se tornam pessoas muito próxima à ela muito rápido, quase n?o tem desenvolvimento para isso pq justamente grande parte do filme é voltada para o mundo virtual, se o único la?o familiar dela tbm tivesse desenvolvimento seria algo como Wolf Children, poderia ter me feito chorar de emo??o... Eu entendo a proposta mas seria perfeito se esses pontos acima fossem feitos, mas o filme continua sendo muito bom, e um dos melhores do Mamoro Hosda, recomendo bastante, muito bom.

Visualnya unik dan enak dipandang mata, animasinya fluid meskipun banyak detil. Lagunya juga sangat indah untuk didengar, vokal dan instrumennya menyentuh hati. Secara cerita, storytellingnya sangat menarik dan membuat tiap adegan jauh lebih dramatis. Hanya saja, ada banyak kekurangan di alurnya yang mana bisa menjadi kesempatan para penggemar untuk membuat teori mengenai kekurangan tersebut. Tindakan yang dilakukan beberapa karakternya juga kurang realistis, seperti Suzu yang rela pergi jauh hanya untuk menyelamatkan seseorang yang baru dia kenal melalui dunia maya dan masih banyak hal lainnya. Overall, konsepnya benar-benar menarik! Saya merekomendasikan film ini untuk mereka yang tertarik untuk terjun ke dunia anime.

Great film. Loved the twist to the traditional storytelling of this tail and the overlay with modern online culture. Not perfect but neither is real life.
