Beloved Sisters Reviews
Rushes along. Interesting times but doesn't settle into a rhythm. Don't like narration. Was the story based on fact? Didn't finish watching. Judging by most reviews, It was OK not to.
Pretty good - three hours long with lots of detail and a thoroughly believable narrative, although not all based on recorded fact. It appears that Schiller married one sister and had a deep and lasting relationship with the other, too; the rest is dramatic licence. Despite being in German and subtitled, this was absorbing throughout. Lots of detail of eighteenth century printing processes, as well as a complex emotional tale and the historic context. Some nice sexy bits too! (interestingly without any explicit nakedness on screen)
This movie dragged on and on and on. It really wasn't worth the three hours of my life I can never get back. It promised a great deal and delivered very little. Not even the 'argument' between the two sisters at the end was enough to satisfy the years of built up frustration they endured. This was a major let down. Not worth seeing.
An interesting story of romance and relationships with most of the passion sucked out of it. The music, lighting, camerawork, and constant resorting to text-on-the-screen to tell us what's happening scream made-for-television.
REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST: My take on the movies Beloved Sisters and Predestination http://ow.ly/HA2a7
I honestly didn't think I'd be riveted by some three hour German film about some affair that happened in the 18th century - but hot damn! This film is definitely a lot to absorb, there's so much good happening, it's smart, sensual, completely unpredictable and brilliantly acted -- it's an utter must-see! (The version I saw was the 170 minute director's cut, there's a 130 minute version available as well -- I can't tell you much about it though)
Germany's Oscar hopeful for 2014 is a lush and beautiful period piece about two real life sister who both fell in love with a poet and their complicated relationship over the years. I found Dominik Graf's movie gorgeous and rather liked the three leads but overall, the movie felt long and bloated and in need of a good edit.
Schiller's high-gossip and true story of his love to the Lengenfeld sisters on the wake of the european revolution. So far the best german movie of this season.
