Benedetta Reviews
Verhoehen never fails to entertain, and this was no exception. Film is based on a true story of a 17th-century nun. This might a tough pill to swallow for those truthful to the faith.
This is inspired by the life and fate of a 16th century nun who claimed to have mystic visions and had a lesbian love affair with one of the sisters at the convent. It's mostly fiction but it is still provocative and suspenseful enough to be entertaining. It's a challenge to religious beliefs as it shows self delusion and psychosis being accepted as faith.
Two hours of pure torture.Mixture of stigmata, plague, resurrection, sapphic love, torture chambers, and popular uprising.According to director Verhoeven, all this is based on historical facts, except the stake scene, which was borrowed from Joan of Arc.
If you are interested in the life of Benedetta Carlini, a Catholic nun of Italy, this film is not for you. Rather this monstrosity portrays the life of a fictional, sexually and socially deviant charlatan named Benedetta and her bent, heretical, twisted, kinky, divergent, warped life. The director, Paul Verhoeven, himself admitted that the film’s ending was stolen by him from the actual life of Joan of Arc. If Benedetta Carlini we’re alive today, she would easily win a case of defamation against the production companies.
De las mejores películas que tienen que ver con la iglesia y la lujuria....muy buena e interesante
Benedetta is a 2021 biographical psychological drama film co-written and directed by Paul Verhoeven 🐀 It's very good! 😀 I'd recommend it 👍🏼 A 17th-century nun becomes entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair with a novice. But it is Benedetta's shocking religious visions that threaten to shake the Church to its core.
A fascinating examination of the thin line between the sacred and the profane. Unsurprisingly Verhoeven is perhaps the only filmmaker who could have pulled this off.
Inspired by a true event, it is a rather unusual cross between religion and eroticism, with a pinch of scandal, just enough to provoke curiosity. From an unrecognizable Paul Verhoeven, the same one who directed Robocop.
Classic case of the filmmaker trying to be provocative and polemic involving religious images. Not everyone can be a transgressor so easily, at least not in these times
In his old age, atheist (though oddly fascinated by Jesus) boundary-pushing filmmaker Paul Verhoven makes a nunsploitation pic that is really -- boring. Perhaps viewers who have never considered how organized religion is fundamentally about power over others and fiercely-protected elitism will find this a fascinating exercise, but for those of us who have already figured this out there are no surprises here. The film goes from one nunsploitation trope to another, but without the fun naughtiness that makes this genre tick. Its beginning scenes have a nice early Renaissance look that could have made this a truly interesting visual experience, but it then quickly slips into looking like any other prettified historical drama. Even the nun's visions of Jesus are pedestrian -- a Ken Russell approach is really needed for such moments. What remains is predictable tedium.
Such a fabulous period romp! I suspect it actually brings out the truth of many Catholic institutions whereby the devoted are busy fucking each other, inflicting torture & someone sent to the stake for being beyond the norm & hence par excellence! Loved it!
Verhoeven strikes back with nucleus weapons on the corrupt religion scam. Not as mystic as the masterpiece "The name of the rose" but, with some cheats, this film provided me with goosebumbs a couple of times. Never underestimate the magical aspects of visions, in a time where human believed in all kinds of things. Yet doing to much out of the lesbian affair, it do not weaken the story to an annoying point. Provoking and delicious!
To me the mere idea of combining religion and eroticism in a feature movie is mainly PORNOGRAPHIC. And indeed, the result is mostly pointless and boring, much like a mediocre soft-core porn movie about nuns getting horny and then laid, struggling to fill up its screen time with more and more variations on the same banale theme. And where the only real question is "when will she come?". I differ from most critic reviewers who find the combination of religion and eroticism as shown in Benedetta, intellectually interesting or philosophically valuable.
CHOCK FULL O' NUNS Dutch director tackles Italian stigmata lesbian nun! And in French! Please sit back down. Paul Verhoeven has graced us with "RoboCop", "Basic Instinct" and "Showgirls", so a natural progression here. But as it turns out, "Benedetta" isn't as outlandish as that triptych of film bombast, in fact, for the first half, it plays very much like a typical Euro period drama. Taking advantage of historic buildings and creative costume design, Verhoeven nails 17th Century Italy (one assumes), where religion was king, the Plague was raging, and women were misunderstood. Some things never change. Based on the documented travails of Catholic mystic Benedetta Carlini, this is one outlandish story. Or many. From the minute the child directs a bird dropping on to a thief, it is evident her spiritual powers are not to be messed with. In order to harness her Godly connection, the chosen one is presented to a convent where more miracles follow. Pretty basic stuff. But then, as a young woman, Benedetta is awakened by carnal pleasure and the movie finally takes off. Soon she is dreaming of dreamy Jesus, bleeding Stigmata style, romping sans vetements, and commanding others in a possessed deep growl. Hoo-boy. Somehow Verhoeven retains control of this feral beast of a project, never letting it off leash into total chaos territory. What actually happened back in the day is speckled speculation - no phone videos to be had - so utter hersay and titular folklore. The visions and miracles are sketchy and shady enough to raise eyebrows, and as is oft the case, witnessed by a select few. Whatever the truth, it sure makes for a super awesome story, one that has survived centuries to reach a big ol' theatre near you. Lucky bastard. - hipCRANK
Fantástico! Filme para poucos. Linda fotografia e tema extremamente interessante!
Paul Verhoeven shows that the image of the Virgin Mary is not just for worship The performances are great, the script is well done and Paul's direction hits the nail on the head at an excellent pace that doesn't let the story drop at any time. Due to the low budget or lack of time, the planned special effects relax and get in the way of the correction of a film that is very interesting.
Fascinating and the tenured Director Verhoeven is far from heavy-handed in this absorbing albeit confusing tale. Beautiful photography by Jeanne Lapoirie.
A campy film for the french historical flim genre, but a visual treat and star performance from both of the lead actresses that lets one forgive the plotholes and clichés. I won't spoil it, but many things happen at the denouement without enough to explain why the characters act as they did, or suddenly reverse their stances. I found some of the lesbian sex scenes a little bit too modern to be credible.
