Bessie Reviews
The movie had a great mix of fun and soul searching moments that will continually raw you in. The imagery and music was captivating. The movie also shinned light struggles of mental health, gender and racial bias. Bessie is encouraging and relateable as she experiences heart break and dissapointment while chasing her dreams. I loved Queen in this movie but Monique was also a star.
Absolutely fantastic! Some plot points felt a tad rushed and so a bit disjointed, but overall the film was strong in it's, script, visual choices and acting. As always Rees and Latifa are always making powerful choices that draw the audience into the emotions of the story.
Okay. The story seems somewhat common … rise, fall, recovery. It was interesting to watch this after watching "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" since Ma Rainey played a supporting role in this story.
Queen Latifa is an untapped genius. Her charisma is 100%. This is a beautiful movie. The acting, cinematography, editing are all spot on. I was mesmerized!
She was no church choir girl, but a foul mouthed licentious drunk. Every song she wrote sounded just like the last one. It was the musicians that made the songs sound better. This movie is filled with hard to like characters including Bessie.
Yet another film that many of the Rotten Tomatoes audience really didn't catch, but most critics love, and again I'm following the critic's opinion. First of all it's an outstanding performance by Queen Latifah in the leading role, which obviously had to be if anyone were to portray Bessie Smith. But also the other characters are well taken care of by a magnificent cast, and the music is real, a truly great plus. The story is told just as Bessie Smith's life was, like a roller coaster, and some scenes take you as far as making you feel that you are there. Although the Empress Of Blues only lived to be 43, there is a lot of life to cover, and perhaps too little time is spent on telling us about it, too fast. It feels like a train going by the station, but it never stops, so you can't get either off or on.
Queen Latifah gives one of the finest performances of her career even for an HBO biopic Bessie Smith was one of the most famous African American voices in the 1920's and she made her claim all on her own she had a very rough childhood being raised by her abusive sister and was one of the first bisexual artists not a lot of black skinned women were considered for stage performances yet Bessie was never one to shy away from making it in the spotlight what she was taught about the Blues is not knowing the people, but having the people know you for her it was all about getting the right kind of music for a broader audience wonderful work by supporting players like Kenneth Michael Williams, Mike Epps, and Mo'Nique Bessie combats racism, producers saying no, and balancing her many relationships with men and women there's a hole in all our lives, nobody else will fill it but you great acting, beautiful lighting, and Queen Latifah sings her heart out as Bessie Smith
Awesome acting by Queen Latifah. I can watch this portrayal over again. Great singing, wonderful insight, and full of information.
It fleshes out Bessie Smith to a degree but certainly not in full measure. Latifah and Rainey can sure sing out, though. It's a pleasure to watch and hear them wail in a film that otherwise doesn't quite cut it.
A well made biopic which gives a good insight into the her life. Doesn't seem too dramatised and presented quite realistically. Good performances.
Brilliant movie, excellent performances all round. Queen Latifah absolutely nailed it as Bessie. She deserves all the award nominations out there. I love that the amazing Bessie Smith got such an awesome movie about her life.
It's not especially good or bad, but slow throughout, specifically during the unnecessarily lengthy first act. The movie does find its rhythm for two stretches, fortunately the latter being the exceptional final twenty minutes. Self destructive in character and story, Bessie seems to only be worth the watch for fans of the genre.
An excellent biopic of a troubled, but amazing woman. Definitely worth a watch, even if you don't got the blues
I found the film particularly degrading to women of color. But I have noticed that anything that degrades especially the black woman seems to inspire much love among many American reviewers. I found the film to be putrid filth, a story best left undone.
