Between the Temples Reviews

Apr 8, 2025

I actually finally signed in to RT just to post a positive review and counteract in my small way the inexplicable number of pans among audience reviews. I think just about everyone will find this film entertaining, frequently funny and touching, and as a bonus gain a little insight into Jewish family customs. Carol Kane and Bob Zemeckis are particularly outstanding among an excellent cast. The style of the film is a little idiosyncratic, with a very 1970s film feel and a psychedelic sequence, so if the occasional artistic flourish bothers you, then maybe stay away. But everyone else should have a rewarding time.

I expected to like it more than I did. I mainly had trouble enjoyed it due to the character played by Carol Kane, I found her insufferable. In retelling the plot line afterwards, I only then realized how similar it felt to a Woody Allen movie.

A movie of great small moments and an impressive final scene

We were totally onboard to like this film, but were left wanting more closure. The stars are certainly not at fault, but it was really hard to believe. It could be a great discussion starter about grief, family ties, religious perspective and more. But as far as comedy goes it was not that funny.

The movie's overt weirdness is both amusing and grating (I get that's kind of the point but still) so it's a mixed bag even if I mostly liked it.

I’m really surprised that others didn’t understand how this could be described as a comedy. I thought it was hilarious and beautifully written and acted. Sorry but I wouldn’t want to hang out with someone who couldn’t recognize the humor here. What else is there in life?

The actors in this are fantastic and fun to watch. Was so excited for a Carol Cane movie. It was listed as a comedy, which I noticed after the fact and was very confused by that. There were some kind of charming, silly moments, but nothing funny. Maybe all those moments I was uncomfortable I was supposed to laugh? Or maybe I need to be Jewish to get some inside references? I really liked some of the dynamics and some of the story but just was never sure what this was supposed to be. Pieces of the story moved along a little bit but all seemed to peter out. Overall just more uncomfortable than funny, and more emotional than charming. Just kind of a humanistic portrait that came out as a rough sketch.

It took a moment to grab me....But I found it quite charming....I loved it...Bon mots were perfect...Want to see it again

This is really supposed to be a comedy? It was pretty unbearable to watch and the climactic dinner scene was not entertaining, not interesting, but made me feel very uneasy and uncomfortable, which eventually led to a terrible ending the the film, more people should see the series "None of Us Wants This?" Which is overall superior and more entertaining.

I’m embarrassed for the actors that participated in this mess of a movie. (Especially Jason Schwartzman who deserves better roles than this.) Carol Kane is talented as well, but probably should be retired if this retread of “Harold and Maude” is the best she can do. In its attempts to be “edgy” ‘Between the Temples’ is a vulgar and often offensive outing. Shame on the producers of this garbage.

A film with a quirky and intriguing start, flames out and engulfs itself with a very boring yet cringy third act.

It's suspicious that there's a lot of reviews that give this movie the worst possible rating when a lot that say it's delightful and quirky. Half a star? If you're not used to this kind of indie work, you might give it a couple stars, but unwatchable? I think this happens to movies about certain groups of people. They get bombed by groups who want to bring the rating down. It happened to Barbie, didn't it? I give this five stars. If you are looking for a Hollywood cookie cutter movie, this is not for you. I thought this was going be that formula of a depressed grieving man who finds meaning in life through some quirky somebody. It's much more nuanced and realistic. There were places that made me uncomfortable with the intimacy and realistic awkwardness. I loved the ending, which brings some closure without wrapping things up in a tidy bow.I hope it gets some of the recognition it deserves, especially Carol Kane's performance.

Off beat and delightful

This movie is an engaging gem. While it has a religious dimension it is really is about the lost, the lonely, the sad, the searching, the different, the outsiders. Don't expect slapstick comedy or obvious characters and plot lines...you'll be disappointment. This movie embeds you into a mildly dysfunctional world of quirky, believable people as they handle real world challenges and relationships. I'm not Jewish but found it easy to navigate the religious references. It was actually educational. This is a great one for a plane ride where you can truly immerse yourself in what you are watching

This film was very self indulgent I thought. Spoke to a very tiny "in world"...and wasn't as Woody Allen funny as it probably thought it was .

Somewhat entertaining Jewish schtick

Enjoyable movie. Not as straightforward as Nobody Wants This, the Netflix romcom with the hot rabbi.. Schwartzman's cantor is less hot, more troubled. Some odd moments, some awkward moments. Carol Kane is a joy to watch.

Uproariously and intelligently funny but also endearing and resonant, boasting realistic, vibrant characters and a great leading duo in Jason Schwartzman and the always fantastic Carol Kane, and often engaging in unexpected and thus all the more fascinating visual detours, "Between The Temples" is a refreshing and immaculately made exploration of loss, love, religion, family and music that never puts a foot wrong (except perhaps the exaggerated, farcical development of the final dinner scene).

Looked forward to it because of the cast. Starting seeing holes in the plot. Then innuendos of inappropriate relationships. One downright icky scene. Then finished out with a completely icky scene. Ugh.
