Bhaji on the Beach Reviews

Mar 6, 2023

Asian family life. A day trip to Blackpool. Conflict over various issues.

A politically correct Nineties film with thinly-drawn characters and a largely predictable plot line. Not bad though, too many characters perhaps. Think 'Letter to Brezhnev', 'Brassed Off'. Meera Syal wrote the script. Good for period colour.

A reasonable good British movie, would of given it more stars but it was a bit dated. Funny and serious at the same time, a group of Indian women go to Blackpool but their troubles follow them there.

I watched this because I lived in Blackpool from 1995-2004 (aged 4-13) before I immigrated to the states, I liked it because it brought back some memories of Blackpool like the wagon wheel, and the north pier in its entirity before the helipad was blown off at the end, trams go past with signs saying 25p fare, it shows the outside of a Woolworths (which ended up going) now Blackpool has gone downhill a lot and the atmosphere isn't buzzing like in this movie. the storyline of this movie however didn't really interest me, and the Brahma on the beach scenes, and the major from keeping up appearences being himself kinda creeped me out. interesting to see dev from coronation street hasn't changed a bit since 1993 though, would of been great if it had a better storyline.

A group of Asian women spanning several generations escape their humdrum existence on a trip to Blackpool. There are funny moments as well as serious ones focussing on issues such as mixed-raced relationships and pregnancy outside marriage. It also stars a twenty-something-year old Jimi Harkishin aka Dev from Corrie!

I had completely forgotten how powerful this movie is, and I suspect it is still relevant 18 years after the fact. Glad to be watching it again and plan to do so often as a reminder of how much still needs to be done to empower, liberate and educate many of us.

cant say no to some early 90's british asianness.

Chadha's stunning debut follows the lives of three generations of Punjabi women travelling from Birmingham to Blackpool - attempting to experience the "British" seaside. Within this potentially comic premise lies real drama and tragedy however, as each character is either hiding something or running from something. Easily Gurinder Chadha's most accomplished film to date.

Miles better than 'Bend it Like Beckham'.

As a lover of British Indian cinema I was so disappointed in this. It is almost unwatchable. There isn't a single competent performance in it, the plot is clichéd and the production is poor. Got to the end for the sheer novelty of watching something so bad.

Predictable and generally not very well-made. Some signs of the talent that will later go on to make Bend it Like Beckham.

The production quality is poor and the story is a little well-trodden, but the pro-feminist message is good and it's a film with heart.

I loved this movie! It might feel a little dated but it tells the story of every immigrant from the young kids who are assimilated to the older women who haven't forgotten and definitely haven't moved beyond the cultures of their home country - India and the ones who are in-between and conflicted about losing their identity and family when they want to move beyond the insular world of their Indian background.

some interesting ideas and scenes, but some really bad acting that is frankly distracting. A little heavy handed at times, but is entertaining enough for one watch, not really any more.

Starts off quite poorly, with some fairly poor acting and clearly 90s British movie production values that develop into a good wee story set in Blackpool of all places.

From the same director as "Bend it Like Beckham", a more complex look at diasporic British-Asian life - race, gender, and generational issues all tackled.

Definitely one of Gurinder Chadha's best films. Deals with the relationships between different generations of women and how that plays out in British-Desi culture. Very enjoyable!!

Very good film. One of Gurinder's best efforts.
