The Birdcage Reviews
Amongst all the hilarity, there are also some poignant moments in the film - when the audience is reminded that the underlying themes in this story are love, acceptance, and support. You can be giggling one second and then tearing up the next.

Hank Azaria steals the entire picture as houseboy Agador.

I was wildly entertained by this. It had a lot of heart and is more than just a bag of laughs. The theme about accepting yourself was really powerful.

This is one of my favorite comedies. The performances of Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Hank Azaria still make me laugh every time I watch this.

Remakes don’t get much better than Mike Nichols’s The Birdcage, which embraced drag shows long before they became the height of cool, and more unsettlingly, another casualty of the rising tide of fascism.

The Birdcage is a triumph because it succeeds as both a straightforward comedy and a social and political satire.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 7, 2023
Williams’ Armand also allows the latitude for pratfalls, panic and a trademark comic fit, where he howls out and plausibly channels, in rapid succession, the dance styles of Bob Fosse, Martha Graham, Twyla Tharp, Michael Kidd and Madonna...

The Birdcage is silly in all the right ways.

Both hilarious and politically incisive, The Birdcage, a remake of the 1978 French farce La Cage aux Folles, stands up surprisingly well through a modern lens.

These underlying feelings of compassion, tolerance, and understanding are this Bird's brightest plumage.

The Birdcage embraces stereotypes and frequently uses its gay characters as comedic devices, even while it weaves a place for them into the fabric of American culture.

...a frequently hilarious comedy...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 17, 2021
The dialogue is sensational, the cast is perfect, the directing is sharp (by celebrated filmmaker Mike Nichols), the music is snazzy, and the film concludes quite cleverly.
| Original Score: 9/10 | Sep 10, 2020
While the film occasionally drifts into stereotypes, they are typically rather harmless and Williams and Lane play off of each other perfectly.

If you haven't seen Birdcage, check it out on video, or better yet, get gussied up and see it in a theater. Either way, realize and appreciate the very symbolic general public acceptance of the transgender phenomenon (and YOU) this film represents.

The Birdcage is a little film with knee-slapping scenes coupled with thoughtfully acute moments as well.

The Birdcage grossed nearly $200 million worldwide in 1996, and that is significant. Box Office Mojo says it's the highest grossing queer film of all time, though they're not counting Frozen and 300, and they probably should.

Campy, comedic romp with lots of profanity.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 19, 2014
Robin Williams plays off of a flaming Nathan Lane with delicious understatement and anchors a farce that moves along at a brisk pace-with or without heels.
