Black Mass Reviews
Black Mass paints a riveting portrait of one of the worst criminals in the history of American organized crime.
Thought is was a pretty solid movie with some awesome actors. Truly disturbing story though. If you enjoy mob movies, you’ll enjoy this one.
Hell of a movie. Depps best performance.
The story is well known, especially to us Bostonians but the acting makes this a must see.
The movie lacked the heart and sole of other mob movies, great cast, great acting, good story, but needed to be a 3 hour move to include the 12 years on the run to reach that epic conclusion.
This is a well-crafted crime story. Although it is slow, it allows the audience to fully grasp the characters and their motives. The detailed exploration of each character's background adds depth, making their actions more relatable and understandable. The pacing, while deliberate, builds tension effectively, making the eventual climax all the more gripping. Additionally, the author skillfully weaves subplots that enrich the main storyline, providing a fuller picture of the world in which these characters operate. Overall, it is an engaging read that draws the audience into the moral complexities of crime and justice.
Needed to tell story of the 12 years on the run. Slow
Dont glorify what he did, solid film
Filme com pouca performances no aspecto da violência. Mas um filme bem retratado.
Somehow Johnny Depp makes you empathize with James Bulger and that makes the movie intriguing and impossible to turn away from.
This is the first time I honestly feel that this movie deserves more attention than it gets very very underrated. Superb performances all around If you have not seen this movie u are not a true crime movie fan
Personally I thought this was a great movie regardless of its accurate portrayal of whitey.
This show was a pretty good for the criminal genre. So many characters it took awhile to catch on to them all. The real ending to James "Whitey" Bulger was being beaten to death at age 89 in prison.
Why is it called Black Mass? Also, if you just described to me what Johnny Depp does in this movie, I would never think he deserved to be on the FBI's Most Wanted List. This movie just struggled to do anything or be about anything of note.
South Boston mob boss James ‘Whitey' Bulger (Johnny Depp) is a man with a strict but misguided moral code, telling his young son that ‘if nobody sees it, it didn't happen.' In order to seize total control of crime profits in the city, he agrees to team up with childhood friend and present-day FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) to rid Boston of an Italian crime family. Depp gives one of his strongest performances, as do Edgerton and Jesse Plemons as one of Bulger's sidekicks. Black Mass is grim and violent, a compelling story of the loyalty associated with friendship and the betrayal associated with self-preservation. Similar in many ways to Scorsese's The Departed, Black Mass effectively attaches a human face to heinous crime and unbridled greed.
The only thing that really stands out in this rather monotonous crime drama about Boston Irish mob leader Whitey Bulger and his federal relations is Johnny Depp's intensly blue eye lenses. It's probably better to watch the documentary.
Fantastic cast! The performance of JD as "Bulger" is phenomenal! He is a rare diamond indeed... 💎 ❤️
Absorbing, creepy, clinical. In places served as a semi-documentary study of sociopathy, in others, just plain scary. The final scene between Whitey and Deborah Hussey freezes the blood. Julianne Nicholson as John Connolly's wife pulls you in until her barely contained fear of Whitey becomes yours as well. Joel Edgerton is intense and utterly persuasive, as always. And Johnny Depp - Johnny Depp should be careful he isn't misidentified before he can enter heaven. I would rate this movie higher than most critics and much higher than most viewers - maybe to be sure Whitey doesn't come at me out of the grave.
