Black Snake Moan Reviews
Acting powerhouses Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci. Enough said
The strongest aspect of this movie is it's soundtrack, which is excellent. Jackson's performance is captivating, but this outlandish story could of been better told in the hands of a more accomplished director.

this is a good movie
It's exploitative, provocative, and was a must-see for me when I was 17 years old. It had been at least a decade since the last time I viewed this movie, and do appreciate its originality, even if the plot can get sloppy here and there. In BSM, we have a petite, foul-mouthed, nymphomaniac (Christina Ricci) who gets literally chained to the radiator of a newly single, disheveled black man (Samuel L. Jackson) (which inspired a meme), with a bout of savior complex, in the South. The reveal for the catalyst for Rae's promiscuity isn't anything new but makes her more sympathetic, but that only goes so far. In fact, I liked that we first meet Rae as an upset girlfriend watching her love (Justin Timberlake) drive down the dirt road to be shipped off to war in one scene, to the next being railed over the bathroom counter by Tehronne (David Banner), a local drug dealer. It immediately sets the tone for the movie. I love Mississippi Delta Blues, which is definitely part of the story here — it's where the title comes from — but takes a back-seat to the sexual, poverty, and racial imagery and/or pornography. That being said, we do get some blues guitar that will scratch that itch. Something that would never fly today is Ronnie (Timberlake) punching Lazarus (Jackson) in the head and calling him the n-word and still making him ultimately a good/sympathetic character. Black Snake Moan offers something different and is the kind of movie that would not be made today, at least not with these names attached to it. It feels like a snapshot of the mid-late 2000s.
If you like films about sexual promiscuity, kidnapping and abuse without repercussions, then this is the movie for you. The blck preacher man is gonna teach the white devil woman how to behave by kidnapping and a abuse. Ah, only godless Hollyweird could come up with this level of claptrap and drivel. What's next? Movies about snakes on a plane?
This ended up being a much different film than I expected and even though it wasn't perfect, it provided a unique story with some equally interesting characters. The blues soundtrack worked really well woven throughout this film but the two lead performances are what primarily kept me interested. I definitely can't ever remember seeing Ricci this good and although some scenes were tough to watch, she deserves all the credit for pulling that off. There was a supporting performance that left little to be desired but as I am generally a fan of theirs I chalk it up to growing pains here. The story alone may not have kept me as engaged but the chemistry between Ricci and Jackson made it real tough to look away. 6.5/10 Samuel L. Jackson Binge: This may be in part due to coming in with low expectations but I thought this was one of Jackson's best performances. He brought out a level of intensity and conviction in his character that has me legitimately questioning if he was a blues singer before taking up acting. SLJ January #56
The premise of the movie comes soaked with guilty feelings. Everybody feels guilty for being dealt a bad hand. And then to "save the day", here comes a cliche in the form of a self-righteous african american pastor who will "fix" the "wicked" white girl. The director manages to make all of the wrong choices, and the result is that you don't identify with any of the characters. The cinematography is beyond pretentious, in many moments you are not sure if you are watching a music video or a commercial. Is one of those movies that has everything to be good, (specially when you have Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci, and Justin Timberlake) however like a train that slowly derails and there's no way back, the film becomes more and more preposterous until it finally ends and leaves a strange after taste. Like an exercise of torture in which the tortured person is the viewer.
Wouldn't be surprised if this film's executive producers were Larry Flynt and Pat Robertson...ultimately a very conservative and quite troubling message emerges from this movie concerning both gender and race. In the end, nothing new to see here: the dangers of female promiscuity and the Magical Negro assisting white folks become better people, thereby earning their place in heaven. According to this logic, salvation for both the white woman and the black man is subservience to the white men they belong to. The second act of the movie is best for its blues and Jackson (his presence alone is worth the price of admission, just like Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy), but isn't nearly enough to save this film from the contemptible screed that it is. I feel pity for Ricci though, for putting so much into her role; what a waste.
if you look at as allegory and mystical infused blues narrative, this film is awesome. ya gotta loosen up to watch it with fresh eyes and not ascribe learnt concepts to the situation that presents itself., it was all sort of understandable and a believable paradigm of good evil/male female. touches on love and fear and deep blues. and their lighter, redemption and sun filled change that enhances and makes 'good' our shared human experience. so - i mean besides Justin Timberlake, who i'd never seen act before - and as previous reviewers have said - a killer blues sound track. Well - i mean, i sure think it was authentic and Samuel plays the blues.
What does Black Snake Moan mean? personal demons As explained in the bonus features on the DVD, the "Black Snake Moan" represents personal demons - the "voice that won't go away." A God-fearing bluesman Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson),takes to a wild young woman Rae (Christina Ricci) who, as a victim of childhood abuse, has become the town tramp she looks everywhere for love, never quite finding it. This is an unusually bold film, but it's also a morality tale. Christina Ricci wears little but a pair of skimpy white underpants as Rae, a properly mixed up Tennessee gal who has an insatiable urge for sex. Lazarus, a local farmer (Samuel L. Jackson), with gold capped teeth, grey hair and woolly beard, has his own problems. When Lazarus finds Rae lying unconscious from drugs, alcohol and abuse near his property, he takes her in. "God seen fit as to put you in my path and I'm going to take this wickedness out of you," he tells her, wrapping a thick industrial chain around her tiny waist, to keep her from running away. Deception, freedom and redemption all weave themselves into a moody tale that held my attention for most of the time, compounded by Ricci's stunning beauty, striking performance and waif-like appearance. Ricci is like a wild cat in heat as she struggles to free herself from the heavy chain. Her performance is incredibly fierce and free. It is reminiscent of Ida Lupino's bold, performance as a crazed women who looses her mind in 1940's 'They Drive by Night' or Elizabeth Taylor's performance in a Taming of the Shrew. Christina Ricci's performance is unbridled and gritty. What I would give to have a conversation with her as pick her brain about how Christina prepared to dive so emotionally deep to give such a raw and unflinching performance . She is first a rate actress. Delightfully outrageous, Black Snake Moan is an explosive mixture of sex, race, and redemption in the Deep South. It may be the most peculiar films I have seen. I love the way that both Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci take chances pushing the boundaries of the content with there no- holds- bar acting chops. Such movies defy all categories and really need to be experienced. Any of you cats want to barrow my blu-ray I will post it to you. 9/10
Unpleasantness but Ricci Makes it well worth the watch.
This movie is excellent, high quality, and is very relevant... but it is Not for everyone. It ends very well, it is well shot, cast, written, and one of the best cast roles for Samuel L Jackson. It has a lot of heavy, brutal sex scenes, and this is what the movie is about. If you don't like rough sex, then do not watch this film. Otherwise, I think it is a masterpiece for Precisely what it is. I highly recommend this film, but just Know there are some really harsh realities, and some stupid things. There is one shot where he is playing guitar and her head is Right there. I have Never liked these types of shots, and it is just a bad shot. The other thing is I didn't like the last shot of Samuel L Jackson with another woman. I mean I liked the relationship, but Not just a flat drop-off, so that needed another 30 seconds at least. These are the only bad things I can think of throughout the entire movie! It has good pacing, great scores, interesting connections, and Many other things that makes this a personal favorite of mine. Definitely worth a watch and a shelf!
While not particularly good, I'm not sure it's as offensive as everyone seems to be claiming. It's just a bunch of crazy people doing stupid things and a farmer thinking it's his calling to cleanse a party girl's demons. I give it a few points for having a simple story, but otherwise it's pretty bland and doesn't really deserve the backlashing or praise it's getting in either direction. I don't really recommend it.
The blues music theme and toe tapping score set the tone in this different type of film apart from the third act which is a little bit of a letdown.
A strange movie, but how it made so little of the box-office I have no idea. Christina Ricci is amazing, Samuel Jackson is Samuel Jackson, it has Justin Timberlake in it for god sakes. And it was a good story. But a strange movie
Black Snake Moan is the type of film that makes you stop and examine your audience before deciding who to recommended it to. It features really solid acting, a great atmosphere, and a strongly different story, but it also gets a bit sick and twisted at times and has no problems doing so. Take my words to heart and then go with your instinct on this one. So for this being a good solid film and for Christina and Samuel being great and delivering very good solid performances that are just great to watch, I give " Black Snake Moan " a C.
