Blame It on Rio Reviews
The reviews remind me how puritanical we’ve become as a society.
Worst music I’ve ever heard in a movie. Absolutely bizarre how the director needed to have a huge tropical bird in almost every shot. All round terrible movie.
I have over 500 movies and bought this because I remember it playing on HBO exactly 40 years ago this week. I have all the HBO guides from the 1980s which are a treasure trove of movie ideas. Anyhow, I bought this on Blu Ray and it's definitely a keeper. It's the tail end of the early 1980s movie nudity but the girls are all stunning. I think the problem people have with this is that the star is 17 but she's physically perfect. I'm shocked at the low rating so I'm giving it 5/5 on the creepy Gen X shameless man scale.
This movie is a hidden gem, full of laughs...Sure, given the extreme sensitivity nowadays, some will find the premise a bit creepy, but everything isn't a fairy tale in the real world...This movie has a combination of seasoned veteran actors (Michael Caine, Joseph Bologna, & Valerie Harper) and newcomers of the time (Michelle Johnson & a young Demi Moore)...It is a well written comedy that will have your face sore from laughing, and even make you feel for the characters even though they are getting into situations they clearly should be avoiding...I would describe it as a free flowing, roller coaster of laughs, betrayal, and realization that life can be unconventional...The scenery is beautiful, the soundtrack is memorable...Is it the best movie of all time??? Absolutely not...However, if you take it for what it is...An 80's comedy that combines coming of age with turning back time, you will enjoy this movie...
Beautiful location beautiful girls and a few laughs. Caine is notorious for not reading scripts before signing up and judging how awkward he looks in some of the romantic scenes I'm not sure he knew what he was getting himself into or at least I hope so but it was the 80's and older men and young women was still very much accepted thankfully not so much today. His performance is good as it normally is and if you can watch it without too much of a modern perspective which applies to many great but troubling 80's films let's face it, it was enjoyable but once will be enough
Hilarious. The narration by character is too funny.
As gross and uncomfortable as it sounds. I hope Cain got another great house out of it because no one else got anything.
I remember seeing this in the 80's when it came out. Didn't think a thing about it. HOWEVER. A big old wtf to anyone saying anything positive about it now. Really? She's calling him UNCLE MATTHEW and is underage for F's sake.
This is a very 80's movie. Older man in midlife crisis has a fling with his best friend's daughter. Michael Caine and the cast are all good. The movie appeals to the prurient interests of a teenage boy but has many weaknesses. The music is so 80's it is painful. Joseph Bologna is very NY and actually pretty good in this one.
One of the all time great comedies.
By the end of the movie I was enjoying the witty dialogue, clever script and understated performance of Michael Caine. I could finally see how Donen could be associated with this movie. But that was after the cringy sexual encounters were done. Don't get me wrong, it was great seeing Michelle Johnson's 100% natural, corn-fed American body on display. And Johnson's performance conveyed that she was quite comfortable with nudity, but I was not so cool with Caine being her partner. It turned out alright. The beginning of the movie also was not helped by the terrible songs. "Blame It On Rio" could have been a smoking hot and classy pop-samba, but it was just clunky music with awkward lyrics. The beach scenes in the first part of the movie ... hilarious as they were clearly a bunch of young guys being extras for fun and young women who had signed releases allowing them to be filmed with no tops on. And I'm told that the major beaches in Rio don't allow women to be topless. But the movie is so old that it was a shock to see so many pairs of petite and completely naturals breasts. So once all the gratuitous nudity (or most of it) was done and the necessary sex scenes were done, the movie actually got down to dealing with the implications of what was going on between the characters. And the script actually got very good as did the acting. And Demi Moore got some lines too. The subtlety of M. Caine's comedic acting is quite risible. The comedy was as funny as it was inciteful. So it's on the whole a good movie.
A few tweaks and maybe some actual humor and this might have been something worth watching. As it is, it's a story about a middle-aged man and his best friend's teen daughter. Cringe.
Saw this in the eighties back in my single days, so looking at this now as a dad is quite different. It certainly doesn't hold up. It tries to create some mid-life magic land for middle aged men looking to recoup their youth. But as per usual fantasy turns into nightmare when the moment is over. But this is Hollywood mores for you. Such as not only does the best friend's daughter say she has a crush on her friend's dad but even his own daughter admits to have had a crush on her own dad. The nauseatingly bad music with overtly cringy lyrics attempts to set a romantic, fanciful mood but it's more cringy than cool. Why a young girl would be so hot after a middle aged man is beyond me, but I'm sure the writer has his middle-aged reasons.
a terrible movie that is just plain wrong on so many levels. An embarrassment to all who were in it. It hasn't aged well and wasn't all that good in the 1980's either. skip this stupid old man- young girl gross offensive movie
A group of horny, self-righteous and not-so-vaguely incestuous yuppies go on vacation to complain. You can really tell that these guys were super proud of this script. Unfortunately, every line and moment they clearly found funny and cleverly intuitive comes off as shallow and gross.
I miss the 80s when you could make cheesy comedies like this and nobody cared. This has some funny lines and horrible music but Caine is good.
Note all critics' reviews here are about 20 years' after the fact. That said, this film hasnt aged well and you will be cringe-laughing for different reasons than originally intended. Still worthwhile to view for insight into a cultural moment and the evolution of comedy and mores and how they can be very much of a time and place.
