Blood Quantum Reviews
the canaduh gov't gives the paddywack tribe some money to make a movie and join society and all they can do is produce a hate whitey zombie flick where they proceed to cut off their noses to spite their face. no explanation as to why anything in this crapfest, just a running "we really won't ever forget we were conquered" diatribe against the townies. the pendulum is swinging the other way now so maybe we won't have to be reminded every minute that the white man is evil and bad. run away.
The concept was cool but the acting ruined it.
There are a lot of good story elements here, and the twist on this (tired) genre is unique. The acting and direction came across, to me at least, as stilted, which unfortunately ruined the film for me. Still, there are so few films about indigenous cultures, it gets a few points from me for that alone.
Saw this near the top of RTs top Zombie films - wish i'd seen the audience rating as I would've saved my time. I can't get over the absolutely awful acting, didn't believe any of it. I don't recommend.
I really wanted to like this but unfortunately it just... sucks. Generic plot with poor pacing and structure, cringingly bad acting, and flat, uninspired camerawork. The premise had so much potential.
Terrible pacing both from a cinematography standpoint, and a video editing standpoint. And I've been a professional editor for 20 years. Most of the shots are unmotivated and meant to look artsy, but since they have no meaning behind them, they fall flat. An example would be the overuse of Dutch camera angles during the opening credits. Another example is the Joss character. When we first see her, instead of establishing the character in any sort of way, or getting us to feel any emotional connection to her, we barely even see her face. But we see a god shot of her tea which has no significance at all. Even medium close-up of her in a particular mood would help. But they seem to be obsessed with B roll shots in the beginning more so than character driven or story development shots. When writing the script, they also forgot that the characters each need their own distinct personality. They aren't just there to deliver lines. A lot of the acting is quite bad except for a few characters. This is a movie where the finished screenplay draft should've been the rough draft and given to a more seasoned writer and director. They would have had to do several dialogue passes along with a bunch of other things, but the premise would've been worth it.
This movie is a blast.
In the early 80s, a zombie outbreak decimates most of the Canadian populations, except for persons with Native American blood. Those survivors attempt to maintain a secured area for those, white and native, that still survive. I enjoyed this film more for the idea than the execution. Sadly, it's just walking dead with Native Americans. It does have some moments that are well executed with good effect, some hilarious, but we've seen these beats before. It would've been served better to flesh out the characters more.
Just awful. The acting and plot are just all over the place. 1/2 a star for gore I guess
Generic zombie flick.
A native community fights against a zombie apocalypse. "Blood Quantum" is a zombie flick with a great balance of gorefest and storytelling. Recommended to the fans who are looking for more than blood-soaked and rotten flesh.
ok, so this movie isn't glossy and there are leaps and iffy points in the telling-- but the *premise*! The premise is so good, and there are flashes of such awesomeness-- like the salmon at the beginning. The shameless homage/hilarious appropriation of a katana-wielding Anishinaabe elder. The postapocalyptic vibe. And like, someone working on this film's love language was practical effects.
Solid and engaging enough zombie apocalypse horror in the first half, which is somewhat surprising when considering that the genre has become diluted and tired.
Walking Dead with an exciting twist and genuine performances. It may sound like something you've seen before but you've never seen it like this. And you probably should, because it arguably demolishes the white gaze of the genre itself.
It started out nice and spooky with an almost supernatural feel, then it unfortunately abandoned that for a meh zombie movie. The SFX were nice. Ugh, some of the characters were written to be 'cool/badass' but it came across heavy-handed. The 'badass' music was jarring at times. I understand there were cultural undertones and I appreciate that and my gripes are not with that. It's an ok watch if you're into the Zombie genre. **Spoiler: near the end, the 'cool/wise' grandad makes the ultimate dumbass decision of staying behind because of his pride for the land. I say it was a dumbass thing to do because the whole movie he was portrayed as a wise skilled warrior who could have protected the last survivors but no, fuck them, he chooses to die and let them fend for themselves because reasons. The last people who survive...what's gonna happen to them? There's no satisfying resolution. Are they going to float off into the sea? How are they going to feed the baby? Apparently, who cares, the movie had to end.
A beautifully shot worth watching new addition to the crowded zombie related social decay human drama genre, even if it doesn't feel like something particularly new. Go for it if you are looking for a more polished thewalkingdeadesque fix. Keep your expectations discrete, it can be slow in the bad way.
How lovely. Just what we needed - another terrible zombie movie... because the other 3 dozen weren't bad enough! THIS movie was just all kinds of awful. Lousy acting and just really boring and stupid. 1 hour and 37 minutes of my life down the crapper!!
Excellent on so many aspects. Well acted, well paced, tight, honest. Worth many watches.
