Bloody Sunday Reviews

Mar 17, 2025

An absolutely brilliant film that shows the brutality and hatred the Irish have received from the British and these events ultimately led to the prosecution of several British soldiers.

Fascinating mostly on a technical level as the recreation of the Bloody Sunday massacre is impeccably staged.

It was good to learn about historic facts about the incident and even though it was touching I didn't enjoy it as much as I would like.

Overall, this is a heartbreaking and devastating film. Serving as a dramatic rendition of the real tragedy, Director Paul Greengrass gives us plenty to admire here. His realistic style from start to finish makes it feel as if viewers are watching this whole thing from the sidelines. At times, elements such as a shaky camera give a nice touch and many moments on-screen will feel raw and tense.

January 30, 1972 was a pivotal moment in The Troubles of Northern Ireland when British soldiers opened fire on citizens in what started as a peaceful civil rights protest in Derry, killing thirteen and wounding fourteen. Gritty and grainy throughout, director Paul Greengrass uses a handheld camera to effectively capture the tumult and horror of the event, a defining moment in the decades long conflict between British and Irish loyalists. Other than Parliamentarian Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt), the organizer of the march, there aren't a lot of characters (and, as a result, not a lot of character development) to follow, allowing the audience to focus on the details of the conflict between the protesters and the police. While Bloody Sunday may not be totally objective in its depiction of events, one is forced to wonder if there actually are two valid sides to this story of injustice and oppression.

Although actual film of the incident apparently does not exist, this movie has all the feel of actual film of the incident. Impossible to watch the film and not be caught up with the emotion of the moment, total suspension of disbelief, you are THERE. Impossible to not conclude that the British Army did absolutely everything wrong, including firing on and killing non-threatening protesters. My wife is Irish on her father's side and was very much pulled into the film.

An English PM (like our Congressman) goes on a march for civil rights for Catholics in 1972 Northern Ireland only to be decimated by the Royal Army paratroopers division who were using live rounds. The correlation between Catholics and US Blacks 60 years ago was similar. I grew up Catholic but converted to Anglican while in Fordham University ( a Jesuit RC school) and I hate the Catholic church but would I kill one, hell no; that is sick. What the hell was going on over there? ? ?

Extremely tense and moving depiction of this tragic event which Greengrass shot and edited into the style of a documentary, developing a uniquely engaging presentation and creating a more memorable film overall.

An extremely authentic dramatic recreation that seemed extra careful to just give the facts as they were uncovered by exhaustive examination. We need to know why justice was never served on the British perpetrators. This movie is a compelling starting point to bringing the hammer down at long last. How many died in a civil war that may have been calmed or averted had this obvious disaster in discipline never been created by a hostile British presence?

To my immense discredit, I only just saw this movie. To say that it is powerful, tragic, brutal, horrific etc. simply does not even begin to describe it! Watch this movie and also read about "The Troubles" and you can not fail to understand why so many in Northern Ireland supported (often VERY reluctantly) the Provos (Provisional Irish Republican Army) or as called by many simply the IRA. I grew up in the 80's in the United States and perceived the conflict in Northern Ireland as one between a staunch US ally, Great Britain, and terrorists, the IRA. I am now a middle aged man and belatedly see the conflict as the terrible multi-dimensional sectarian, fight for independence tragedy that it in fact was. Simply put, it was one of the most powerful movies I have ever watched. I had to pause it several times as it became literally overwhelming in many parts. I wish I could give it 6 stars!

Honest in its portrayal of day that will live in infamy for many.

It recreates the history. I don't like it's documentary style and editing.

Bloody Sunday, also known as the Bogside Massacre, was an incident on 30 January 1972 in a neighborhood in Derry, the second largest city of Northern Ireland. British soldiers opened fire on a protest march of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association against internment without trial that was introduced by the British administration a year earlier. The soldiers wounded 26 unarmed civilians, of which 13 were killed on the spot or died soon after wounding. This resulted in great rise of influence and recruitment into the IRA. Bloody Sunday is one of the most significant events during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Based on actual events.

Director Paul Greengrass perfects his shaky-cam action in this historical drama. He shoots in an almost documentary way. It brings the horrors and chaos of the situation. The action does not need computer graphics, or pyrotechnics. Everybody NEEDS to see this like I did using boxxy software for both it's history and film making. This movie immerses the audience into this world. The film cuts the scenes into small few seconds sequences separated by fade outs. This mimic the fragmentary nature of memory and was extremely effective in creating a very realistic feel. As to the facts of the film, another person smarter than me will have to judge.

It was filmed in documentary style, with no individual character development. No depth, but a movie about a march, riot, and shooting of the rioters by British soldiers.

Greengrass opting for shooting with a hand held camera gives the movie a real documentary feel. This degree of realism makes the movie even more disturbing. James Nesbitt gives one of the best performances that I've ever seen and this makes you ponder why he never made the leap to the big screen. One of the many war crimes committed on Irish soil by the British Army but this cowardly act in particular really deserved to see those responsible on trial in The Hague.

Good true story, shot in matter of fact style with good performance by Nesbitt.

Great movie in the style of 'you are there as it happened'. Just returned from Ireland and toured the town of Derry. So sad to know what those poor people endured back during The Troubles. Glad to see peace returning. Derry is a beautiful city! And so were the people we met there.
