Blue Chips Reviews

Mar 10, 2025

Not a bad movie but the only problem was understanding the moral dilemma of the hero.i mean what's wrong if some poor people got some money a house and a better life for their son to play basketball and earn a degree.ok in a way I understand the ethics involved but practically.. the "sponsor" was the corrupt bad guy giving gifts expecting basketball wins,is this so wrong? I mean in pro ball a bonus is perfectly legal.

I have mixed feelings about Blue Chips, since in the summer of 1993, I auditioned to be part of the fictional pep band for the Western University basketball team and got the part along with friends from the Indiana University pep band. The audition process was a ton of fun, albeit stressful, and while it was all done in Indianapolis, it did provide a little glimpse into the "process" of getting a movie made. And then, a week before shooting, they got rid of all of us and went with a high school group up where they would be shooting some of those scenes. That's show biz, baby. Blue Chips was certainly of the moment as it had a collection of some of the biggest names from the college and pro basketball world, as well as cameos from legendary college coaches like Bobby Knight and Rick Pitino. On top of that, this one had a DEEP bench (pun intended?) with Nick Nolte, Mary McDonnell, J.T. Walsh, Ed O'Neill, and Alfre Woodard with solid roles. All told, an interesting concept - what would you be willing to do to win? - should have been a slam dunk, but it felt like it pulled some punches and just skidded across the surface without the true emotional impact.

A fairly average sports drama. It plays with melodramatic themes of righteousness, but doesn't allow itself to totally dip into sentimentality. If you dig sports flicks, you should enjoy.

A man named Amin referred me to this movie but I think this a phobe. Bob Cousy better be happy he acted against Electricians and Plumbers or he may be the most ass on acting I've ever seen.

Far more notable for its cameos than anything else, but watchable.

Some fun stuff for sure as a college basketball fan, Nolte was really really good in this. The basketball scenes were shot well and it was fun to see Knight, Boeheim, and Dickie V.

A better than average sports movie that gets a little too heavy handed with the moral lessons.

Blue Chips is a disappointing film. It is about a college basketball coach who is forced to break the rules in order to get the players he needs to stay competitive. Nick Nolte and Mary McDonnell give horrible performances. The script is badly written. William Friedkin did a terrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

Very little about this movie rings true in Nolte's performance as the head coach of a major collegiate basketball power. His final postgame press-conference speech is both pretentious and ridiculous.

I loved the scene when Nick Nolte kicked the basketball in the crowd!

one of the better sporting movies it seems. with a superb performance from nick nolte this movie shows you that doing everything you can to win ultimately means you may lose overall.

Nick Nolte's performance in this movie gets better every time I watch it.

Blue Chips is one of the best kept secrets of the 90's. If you're reading this saying "wtf dude I love this movie how is it a secret?" then first off, I love you, and secondly most people I talk to haven't seen this movie. I know...what's their deal? Nick Nolte absolutely kills it as the troubled coach Pete Bell who faces a dire internal battle between conforming to what seems to be the only way to compete in the modern college basketball recruiting landscape, or tarnishing the purest thing in the world to him: the game of basketball. Throw in some very surprisingly good performances by Kazaam himself, Shaquille O'Neal, and Penny Hardaway, and Blue Chips is perhaps the most realistic view of a college basketball program we've ever seen on screen. The basketball scenes in this movie are incredible (probably because they had NBA superstars performing them) and Nolte elevates everyone who interacts with him on screen. It's March Madness as I write this, and I can't wait to sit on my couch, turn on my tv, and watch games where I know probably half the players are being paid, but I really don't care. One of the best sports movies of all time!

I see what they were goon for but the execution was poor. With minor changes the movie would've been great but overall it's a decent movie to watch at least once.

Nolte is great and the players were pretty entertaining. Makes you wonder about what college sports programs.
