Blue Jasmine Reviews
Phenomenal! Woody Allen basically updates “A Streetcar Named Desire” and sets it in the aftermath of the financial crash of 2008. No matter how much I can praise the script, it is Cate Blanchett that truly deserve almost all of the praise for this film. There have been two actresses in the twenty first century that have given film performances for the ages: one is Charlize Theron in “Monster” and the other is Cate Blanchett for this film and for “Tar”. Her final scene is beyond astounding. I cannot recommend this movie enough.
How could this actress do such a film?
This movie was something I happened to find out about, and did not disappoint! Figured if Woody Allen wrote, and directed it, would show promise, Cate Blanchetts performance was mesmerizing, and totally Oscar worthy, the supporting casts were also memorable, was very well written, and truly enjoyable to watch.
Cate Blanchett is the best actress of the planet. Her performance in Blue Jasmine is unforgettable.
Great movie about a rich socialite married to a scammer, then lose their wealthy lifestyle. She tries to rebuild her life and it doesn't work out...at least the ending of this movie. Great acting. Cate is one of my favorites.
Wanna watch a bunch of cancelled creeps act like creeps for over 2 hours? Well-cast, especially since a lot of scandals have broken but overlong & very "new york" despite being set in California - which is de rigour for Woody Allen.
This may be the best movie Woody Allen has directed this century, and it contains one of the great performances from any of his movies ever. Say what you will about Allen, but his penchant for writing strong, complex female characters is unparalleled. Jasmine, who could rightfully be described as a modern-day Blanche DuBois is as charming as she is infuriating, living in her own world of deception and mental illness. And Blanchett is phenomenal, an adjective I save for the cream of the crop. It's a truly magnificent performance that is among the best of the last decade. Blanchett is among the least vain of our modern actresses, even though she is among the most beautiful. She can look stunning in once scene and not so much the next. It's to Blanchett's credit that she makes Jasmine not only palatable but often endearing despite a troublesome set of character traits. She is surrounded by a great supporting cast and Allen's wonderful screenplay, which harkens back to the great work he did during the late 80s and early 90s. Fans of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE will find several parallels, but this feels like a true original, and Jasmine is an unforgettable character and atop the finest characterizations of Blanchett's career.
Blanchett perfectly plays a spoiled woman and the story is somewhat interesting.
O filme é completamente caótico com seus personagens em crises existenciais, isso torna o longa mais fabuloso ainda. Woody Allen é Woody Allen, não tem como um filme dele ser ruim.
Woody Allen delivers another success with Cate Blanchett giving one of the best performances of her career A rich supporting cast includes Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Peter Saarsgard, Lewis CK, and Bobby Canavalle Jasmine is a woman; a rich Manhattan socialite who was married to a man Hal but he ended up stealing all of her money He also defrauded his clients as a money manager affecting Jasmine's sister Ginger Falling on hard times she decides to move in with her sister in San Francisco We also see she's been suffering nervous breakdowns even talking to herself coming off perhaps manic abusing alcohol and anti-anxiety medications This movie really becomes an emotional roller coaster with Jasmine starting conversations with those around her and eventually blowing up their lives Allen directs her not as likable but providing a fascinating character study Blanchett is a pure gold here
Cate Blanchett is at the top of her game as a woman who's world is crumbling down and is the only reason to see this rather mean-spirited flick.
I wanted to have a happy ending for both sisters. Loved Cate's role playing. Overall very interesting throughout the movie.
You can get lost easily in the story. Most of all, the acting of Cate Blanchett is outstanding.
Well into the twilight of his career in 2013, Blue Jasmine proves that Woody Allen has not lost his directorial chops. In it, Jasmine (Cate Blanchett), a repugnant narcissist, is a spoiled socialite who loses everything when her husband kills himself after being charged with fraud. After moving in with her less affluent sister (Sally Hawkins), the lives of both women begin to spiral out of control. The movie works on the strength of yet another remarkable script by Allen, as well as Allen's direction as he effectively sets up subtle but remarkable long takes. To top it off, Blanchett and Hawkins give great performances, as do the rest of the cast, which include the likes of Alex Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard, Bobby Cannavale, and Louis C.K. Blue Jasmine is not just an excellent late career film from Allen, it is also one of his best films overall.
A well structured, modern script roughly built on the themes of A Streetcar Named Desire, but not in ways that feel trite or imitative. Film follows well heeled US socialite falling from grace and realizing that without anything you're just a nobody. Film is, typically for Allen, character driven, falling somewhere between romantic comedy and the type of matchbox social realist drama that people are familiar with. This is one of the better examples of the man's work, although many have doubts about the validity of later period Woody Allen due to persistent allegations about a sex abuse incident from the 1990s onward. Film also stars once-admired Louis CK and has a bit part for Andrew Dice Clay, a man that can be funny, but also just painfully sexist and crude. Besides that - Kate Blanchett does really very well in the piece.
The best acting performance from Cate Blanchett!
This movie won't be for everyone, but if you like the study of a personal struggle and don't mind the lack of closure (Woody Allen directs), you will probably remain glued to the screen due to the fine performances in this movie. Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins provide mesmerizing portraits of two sisters as unlike as they can be.
? IT's not my rating!!!
This is an amusing film about a well to do family. I suppose its pretty typical, as Woody Allen films go, so I wouldn't say its free from cliches or is entirely original. However, its a pretty pleasant watch regardless. I quite liked the easy listening, jazz type music played in the background of some scenes. The plot pace is somewhat slow but I didn't feel bored or entirely distracted - I enjoyed seeing how characters interacted with one another, who opened up to who and so on. Its about social class, with the main character clearly viewing herself as a socialite but having to become accustomed to the less than flamboyant environs of her sister. Its amusing if you like seeing people being brought down a peg or two, social class wise. There are some cringey moments and I thought Cate Blanchett did quite well in portraying the titular character, Jasmine. I found myself laughing at some scenes, when Jasmine finds herself in infuriating circumstances. This is an easy, laidback sort of a watch - its nothing particularly special but its by no means a bad watch. Its certainly worth a watch, especially if your a fan of Cate Blanchett.
Cate Blanchett was just amazing in this movie. I am a fan of Bobby Cannavale since seeing him in Station Agent, one of my all time fav movies. Woody Allen and his dysfunctional family theme is strong and, this time, enjoyable. Your opinion may vary. 🤣
