Bob Roberts Reviews
It's hilarious and still relevant. watched in 2022. Similar to Wag the Dog. Done by Tim Robbins himself, satiric direction maybe influenced by Altman.
Tim Robbins wrote, directed and starred in the caustic satire Bob Roberts, a mocumentary that is unapologetic in its attack on right-wing, conservative politics in the United States. Roberts is a Republican politician running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, a Dylan-like character who relates his ideology through folk music and a populist doctrine. Lacking any sense of subtlety, which is undoubtedly deliberate, the film is clearly an attack on Republicans and anyone who supports them. Robbins is great in the lead role, the supporting cast is expansive and impressive, the writing is wickedly sharp, the songs are fantastic, and the final ten minutes are absolutely brilliant. Clearly made for an audience that leans to the left, Bob Roberts will appeal to any filmgoer who can check his or her political colors at the door.
This movie seems more relevant now today than ever . You have a fun free thinking guy who loves his country going into politics as an outsider and instantly becoming hated by all the life long politicians . And he’s conservative and happens to offend all liberals . Hmmmmmm...... awfully familiar 3.4
Entertaining but not not as deep as it thinks.
Everyone should see Tim Robbins' viciously intelligent and scandalously forgotten political satire. He wrote, directed, starred - but it's very much an ensemble triumph - with great cameos from Ray Wise, Alan Rickman, Gore Vidal and a host of others, and deliberate nods to Spinal Tap, Robert Altman (particularly Nashville) and movies like The Manchurian Candidate. Very funny, scarily prescient, essential viewing.
This film predicts the current state of the USA. From a politician with a rebel/conservative persona who has people worshiping him and even mobilize for their cause. It seems that every named character is a recognizable face from the 90's. It's a really well made political satire like no other I've seen.
My God, does this film describe exactly what is going on in America right now in 2019! The only difference is that Trump is much less intelligent. can't sing, and does not understand the stock market. But the crooked fake charity, the hate for altruism and real Christianity, the corruption and crime of the candidate, the appeal to a crumbling working class by emphasizing that those who are poor, those who on welfare, immigrants, and the homeless are just lazy and don't want to work, Congressional investigations, a crooked billionaire as the candidate--it is all too sickeningly familiar! Tim Robbins got it all right for a movie made about 27 years ago! I wonder what he feels about how accurate he would be in 2019.
Bob Roberts is a decent film. It is about a right-wing folk singer who becomes a corrupt politician and runs a crooked election campaign. Tim Robbins and Alan Rickman give good performances. The script is a little slow in places. Tim Robbins did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor and drama.
Gets a bit too peachy at times, but overall the political commentary and satire play well (arguably even more so now than in '92).
My dad highly recommended this and claimed it foreshadowed the rise of Trump. I like it, but disagree because I think it's an interesting parody of conservative politics of the 80s and 90s with a smug Hollywood liberal view (it is a Tim Robbins movie after all). Even in its smugness it is still interesting and fun, with Robbins as a conservative senate candidate along with Alan Rickman as a CIA-connected campaign manager
Bob Roberts is a movie that I maybe wanted to see but never really did because maybe I just wasn't interested. Politics bore me to death and a movie about a folk singing politician with a satirical bent doesn't seem like a decent romp. Maybe a tad too long to a point where it almost loses its welcome, Bob Roberts still has some humorous moments. I wouldn't really recommend it highly but would say that it is pretty good in a Christopher Guest kind of mockumentary way.
Fell flat on my face wow wow wow watched it 3 times in a row ! The background music concept blew me away totally too as Im in that trade 7 STARS !!!
Political style mockumentary about a Pennsylvania Senatorial candidate who's controversial stand on many topics makes him evil to some, and a second coming to others. Tim Robbins directs this very well, still not sure if I liked it or not, that character is a bit too ridiculous, It\s indeed Bob Dylan goes to the Senate and is fake like all the rest of them, but this gets too political for it's own good, and becomes diatribic at some points. We get it Tim, you're pissed at politics, would you like a bigger hammer?
