Good story. Touching period piece. A most confusing love triangle blossoms. I recommend it if you are not a closed-minded prude, and you appreciate the Brits.
This is a moving drama that *just* manages to veer away from being too preachy at the end, although it was a close call. Shawn Hatosy turns in an impressively understated performance.
A very nice story of young Brendan Behan that shows love sometimes is found in unexpected places. As with any movie with WWII as a backdrop, there is not always a lot of sunshine, but the sweetness of youth is demonstrated.
This should have been a 온라인카지노추천 movie, filled with melodramatic music and also heavyhanded character and plot development. There was a nice story in there somewhere but it was carried out poorly.
I read that it's nothing like the book. BUT, as a movie... it was pretty great. Very emotional. Loved the performances too.
I've had such a tremendous run of luck with foreign and independent films from Netflix. I wasn't really sure what 'Borstal Boy' was about and I picked it more for the length of the film than for any other reason because I had only an hour and a half before I needed to be doing something else. What a well spent 90 minutes it turned out to be. The British have an inimitable way with drama; we Americans don't have a horse in that race when we're up against them and this movie proves it. You sensed from the very first scenes that it was going to be a good movie, but the latrine scene with the boys, Brendan Behan and Charlie Milwall played by Shawn Hatosy and Danny Dyer respectively, gave you a sense that there would be no histrionics, no bleeding pathos here. What you knew was that there would be fine acting ahead. I greatly admire Peter Sheridan's direction, especially given the topic - he could have taken it over the top, but he kept the keel even. We Americans, even we gay Americans, sometimes shy away from bringing a gay scene into a situation but the British don't bat an eye and lay everything out for everyone to see. That's a good approach and 'Borstal Boy' proves it. That the story was true does nothing to remove the art from it, and that it was artfully played doesn't diminish the truth. I very highly recommend this movie, to both my gay, and my straight friends.
A bit disapointing , expected more, Danny Dyer was good but Shawn Hatosy`s irish accent from an emrican wasnt convincing.

Watched this one on Netflix..saw that Danny Dyer was in it and that it took place during WWII and had an IRA plot. So I gave it a watch. It was an alright flick. Wonder if it was harder for Danny Dyer to play a poof or have the last name Milwall (close enough to the hated Millwall F.C.) being a Irons fan that he is. Though I will admit that Dyer does a great job in the flick; it would take a lot of courage and confidence to play such a role.
Didnt know much about this besides it starred Dyer. I am not a fan of him but his acting was great in this love story!
In a sense I was blown away with this film. I really enjoyed the narrative and sheridan obviously knew what he wanted to get out of the film. The only thing that put me off was the gay kissing scene, I just dont think there was any need for it. Other than that it is an awesome film; well written, directed and acted.
Watchable, but seriously disappointing. For reasons I cannot even imagine, Sheridan took Behan's rebellious and humane memoir-novel and turned it into a mediocre Lifetime movie. Admittedly, I really wanted to like the love affair between Charlie and Brendan--there was, after all, a homoerotic subtext to their friendship in the book. But the whole thing was so botched, and it was added to the completely fabricated romance with Liz, the deletion of major characters (like Joe), and the simplification of Shaggy into a cruel disgusting sociopath and literate, tolerant Brendan into precisely the type of quare-hatin' Irish bogman he loathed. Just doesn't work.
I would rather see Jesus being bent over a pile of dead children, being raped by Jeremy beadle than suffer another minute of the poorly acted/scripted/shot abortion that this film is
It was a shock to see Danny Dyer playing a homosexual but other than that, his character was just like any other. A "Bad Boy". Its quite a heart warming film, occasionally funny and engaging but its quite a forgettable film.
