Bowling for Columbine Reviews

The filmmaker Michael Moore seeks to explain how the massacre could occur, and why gun deaths are so much higher in the U.S. than in other countries, he’s not afraid to confront high-profile figures.

Bowling for Columbine urges you to think about what patriotism really means.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Jun 7, 2024

No one vivisects the shortcomings of America better than Michael Moore.

| Original Score: 8.6/10 | Oct 29, 2023

The film's continued relevance is impossible to ignore.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 14, 2022

Bowling for Columbine isn't a subtle film; instead, it makes its case with Magnum force.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 10, 2021

The shots of desolate, devastated neighborhoods in Flint, once a center of automobile production, are among the most effective in the film.

| Feb 16, 2021

An extremely effective, if not rambling film that asks the question "Are we (America) a nation of gun nuts, or are we just nuts?"

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 31, 2021

Though Moore's style and biases have often been called into question, Bowling for Columbine diagnosed America's gun problem...

Readers of these pages need no introduction to Michael Moore, nor will they require any acrobatics on my part to go see Bowling for Columbine, which is (brace yourselves) pretty terrific.

The most striking thing about Michael Moore's 2002 documentary, Bowling for Columbine, is how painfully relevant it still is.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jun 3, 2019

hits us with hard truths and thought-provoking inquiry while also making us laugh

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 27, 2018

Whatever, dude. Unlike Moore, I have homes on both sides of the border and it's the Quebec one I keep locked.

I don't like Michael Moore. He cheats. When a film is presented as a documentary we expect some kind of journalistic search for truth ... But questions he raises about guns and violence ...add an immediacy to questions he asks that we all need to answer.

| Original Score: B | Jan 4, 2018

Must-see gun violence documentary is brutal.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 22, 2010

A frustrating film that asks more questions than answers.

| Apr 29, 2009

Agree with his messages or not, there's no denying the effectiveness of Moore's presentation.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Dec 27, 2007

It's both powerful and infuriating, brilliant and facile, hilarious and horrific, witty and demagogic. It's a great movie to argue about.

| Nov 5, 2007

For all its gallows humor and choked laughter of disbelief, it feels rather soul-sick and bewildered.

| Original Score: A | Jul 23, 2007

It may be more op-ed than journalistic, but that does not distract from the fact that BFC makes for a thoroughly enjoyable, thought provoking film.
