Boys on the Side Reviews

Apr 18, 2025

Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, a história é fraca, mas o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e mais relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom.

The mixed tones didn't work at all for me.

Boys on the Side tells the story of three disparate women (Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Mary-Louise Parker), all carrying their own significant emotional baggage, who embark on a road trip across America. However, what starts as a Thelma and Louise-like odyssey of personal discovery and female empowerment soon devolves into something more maudlin, along the line of Beaches. While the characters are all likeable enough and the movie is helped along by an excellent soundtrack, it ultimately feels as though it is hurt by the tonal shift, which feels like a bit of a cop-out, and way too much unnecessary and awkward dialogue, losing sight of how powerful imagery can be in such a visual medium. It's not that it's a bad movie, but you can't help but think that director Herbert Ross simply overthought things. Sometimes less is better.

The best way to describe this movie is being taken on a ride. It's charming, adventurous, emotional, funny, and everything in between. As friendship grows between the main characters, a relationship is also grown between the characters and the audience, so much so, you'll be in an emotional mess by the end of it. The cast handles all that's given to them with eloquence and skill. Movie vibes I'm picking up on is akin to Fried Green Tomatoes, My Girl, or Velma and Louise.

Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore, Matthew McConnaughey, and Mary-Louise Parker as Jane, Robin, and Holly A movie about a group of women who wander their own way in life Jane is a musician, Robin is a real estate agent and offers to drive cross country; the two of them decide to go from NYC to LA Along the way they run into a young blonde named Holly who wants to find love but she's also expecting a child Plus it turns out Jane and Robin have secrets from one another This sorta plays like another ‘Thelma & Louise' but with three female buddies along the spirits of ‘Fried Green Tomatoes' Sometimes if you don't have any place to go, it's best to stay where you are, children are supposed to live after us, is it ok that women use men like side pieces even though it's been done to them for the longest time?, you get whoever you end up with, we don't ever have to complain or explain, there's this inexplicable bond between women there no denying that An emotionally engaging film that struck a real chord with me The three actresses are a dime a dozen showing how strong their friendship is and the lengths they'll go to stay connected

One of the best movies!

I love this film. Have watched it a dozen times. The cast is spectacular and I appreciated the fact that this was the first time I had ever seen a positive image of an African American lesbian character reflected back to me on the big screen. Thank you Whoopi Goldberg. and Herbert Ross!!!

Started off thinking this would be a fairly superficial movie. It ended up being a wonderfully emotional film. Very much ahead of its time and I wish these themes were adressed more often now by big name actresses.

One of THE most underrated, underappreciated movies of all time. Stellar performances by three stellar women. Whoopi Goldberg shines as Jane; Mary-Louise Parker radiates as Robyn; and Drew Barrymore sparkles as Holly. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll wanna watch it over and over again.

Awesome cast, and an awesome movie. A cool insight on how friendships can be made out of the oddest, yet unique life situations. Funny moments thru the movie, and a "tear jerker" to boot...

The lead actresses have charm and have solid chemistry together. While not being overly memorable, it's passably entertaining.

Love this Movie and I can't find it anywhere

Jane (Whoopi Goldberg) is a night club singer, out of work. Robin (Mary-Louise Parker) is a quirky real estate agent looking for a ride-share to accompany her to California. Her advertisement is answered by Jane, who at first was uncertain about her. A stop in Pittsburgh picks up a third, Holly (Drew Barrymore), escaping a violent and drug-dealing partner. Girls on the road, reaching understanding, respect, and care for each other. But this trio is different - Jane a lesbian, Robin suffering with AIDS, Holly running from her past, seeking one-night stands and a good man. also stars Matthew McConaughey, James Remar, Billy Wirth, Amy Aquino, Dennis Boutsikaris and Jude Ciccolella. directed by Herbert Ross.

One of the best "chick flicks" ever

Mar 16, 2013

Loved these three actresses together in this film but not sure if the theme has now been over worked (however, the reference to Thelma & Louise was priceless) but bearing in mind that it is from 1995 and I'm just seeing it now. Anita Gillette was wonderful in the role of Robin's mother and there were a couple of scenes from this movie that, despite the overall melancholy, had me laughing out loud.

Yeah it was alright, definitely a chick flick.
