Brad's Status Reviews

Jan 27, 2025

Brad's Status is a 2017 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Mike White 🍿 The pace of this movie is just toooo slow… Not bad, but not my favourite either 😐 Meh, it passed the time. Just. 😐 👍🏼👎🏼 Although Brad has a satisfying career, a sweet wife and a comfortable life in suburban Sacramento, things aren't quite what he imagined during his college glory days. When he accompanies his musical prodigy son on a university tour, he can't help comparing his life with those of his four best college friends who seemingly have more wealthy and glamorous lives. But when circumstances force him to reconnect with his former friends, Brad begins to question whether he has really failed or if their lives are actually more flawed than they appear.

This is an outstanding movie that should have received higher scores in my opinion. It says so much about the preciousness of life and how precarious it is. How one's personal values shape one's life because they shape one's choices to a large extent. At the same time, it points out the fact that what we define as problems is very much shaped by the culture and socioeconomic background from which we come. I really liked Ben Stiller in this and Austin Abrams, who played his son was very good, with a nuanced portrayal of this highly intelligent, talented, sincere young man. I recommend it and right now it is streaming on Amazon Prime video for free.

Could have been titled this is 50. But its a sad inversion of getting older instead of celebration.

About 20-minutes in: "Sometimes in life you lose the plot." This movie has the same problem, but then again, it never had one to begin with...

Not bad, not great. A coming of age movie for both father and son that suffers a bit from being self indulgent.

Surprisingly heartfelt and extremely relatable. The performances are also really strong.

This is pretty typical Ben Stiller fare. Although its categorised as a comedy, it certainly isn't an obviously laugh out loud funny type of a film, so I'd question labelling it a comedy. However, there are a few moments which I suppose made me smirk a bit. Its another sort of life reflective, somewhat philosophical (without being too deep), not quite maudlin but not entirely far away from that either. The main character, Brad, is someone the viewer is clearly meant to feel sorry for but I wasn't especially convinced by the performance Stiller gave. However, nonetheless it was a pretty easy watch and I suppose I imagine others would enjoy it more than I did. I didn't think it was entirely memorable as such but others may disagree - perhaps its more aimed at parents of adolescents soon set to leave home, as the plot is mostly about Brads son looking to go to college. I thought Jenna Fischer and Michael Sheen gave alright performances but otherwise, there isn't much to say about it, although I did find the instrumental music played in the background quite distracting and irritating at times. There is plot development but it felt painfully slow to me. I wouldn't especially recommend it as such, no.

I am only a little more than halfway through and Brad's incessant inner monologue of what a failure he feels himself to be is wearing very thin. I keep hoping for it to get better, but it's becoming so annoying. He has a lovely nice wife, a child who has achieved enough to get into an Ivy League school and I am sick of Brad. He needs psychological help. I gave it three stars simply because it might get better towards the end, but I'm not counting on it.

This film has a mature premise, following a man who questions his life choices, accompanied by a solid performance from Ben Stiller in the titular role. It's just a shame that the execution feels a little lacking.

Wow, I had no idea that people would give this movies such bad ratings, whereas it deserved better that that. I find it more relatable than ever with Brad's life and thoughts. The struggle in life is real especially with men, with all the toxic masculinity happening right now. The movie reminds me that everybody has their own life, just kinda live it, live our very own, unique life, with the people we love.

It was ok overall as it was kind of a somber look at the life of a man who felt he was unsuccessful compared to his other college friends, but now sees the world through his son's journey into the University scene.

Loved the orchestral performance. Made me squirm in parts, but spoke to me the whole way through.

Let's be honest guys, the movie is boring. I don't see much appeal to this movie at all. What I don't understand is, the people here always rates the good enjoyable movies bad and boring movies like Brad's Status and The Royal Tenenbaums very good. In my opinion, they don't have any clue what a good movie is nor what good comedy is. Night at the Museum, Tower Heist or The Watch are much better movies than Brad's Status.

Good movie about a man reckoning with status/jealousy/competition. The movie raises questions about identity and meaning. Excellent cast. The main epiphany occurred as the protagonist learned that his friends/competitors were not as well off as they seemed, so he didn't have to feel so jealous. The implementation came off as a bit too breezy for my liking, leaving me wondering if anything would have changed if he continued to think of his friends/competitors as generally content people. A secondary epiphany, that he can love others without possessing them, was touching and, I suppose, loosely related to the theme of status. I expected the bar scene to be cringe-worthy, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise and a nice way for the character to spill his heart. As the film wound down, we got glimpses that the protagonist was a caring guy, but was that who he "really" was? Throughout most of the film, we're presented with a man who comes off as distant from his son and overly eager to please him. But with such a well-adjusted teenager, it seems likely that he was a great dad. I was left wondering who he was before he faced his mid-life crisis.

Another hollywood movie about an old guy fantasying about a young college aged woman who is often shown in a bikini in his fantasy. Just another way for pedowood to objectify young women and pretend its okay. Its such an old an boring theme, we see right through it. Start paring these old guys with women their age.

I actually really enjoyed this one. I love the idea of a guy who seems to have completely missed the point of everything and lost sight of what matters; readjusting and regaining his sight. I felt touched by the close bond of father and son and really enjoyed the music throughout. Not a life changer in any way, but a good movie no doubt.

Kinda a sweet endearing movie was okay but could have been better.

This may be problematic for some viewers to get through, as its main focus is a character who is essentially self-centered and hard to like, constantly whining about his lot in life. Sure a more cynical viewer could look at this and simply call it White Privilege: The Movie, but doing so would be dismissive and insincere. The uncomfortable truth is that a lot of us have these kind of musings, even if we don't like to admit it... Stiller's inner monologues hit a little too close to home for me, that it makes it almost uncomfortable to watch, but in that unease breeds a self-reflection that is more than one can ask for from a movie. So at the end of the day, this is a film that gives you a lot to chew on.
