Breach Reviews

A good realistic biopic of the discovery and uncovering of the spy who infiltrated America and sold it secrets to the Russians.

Very well done movie about the real life traitor Robert Hanssen. A less artful script would have stressed a fake patriotism or create unnecessary confrontations. The plmoves very well until the final resolution. The case itself provides of course another example that proves that religiosity and the Christian (or any other) faith hardly builds an ethical person.

Good espionage movie with a great performance by Chris Cooper. The actual sequence of events were probably less dramatic and boring so Hollywood takes some artistic freedom to make it more existing and squeeze it into a two hour movie.

Really interesting movie about a true story. It is a little slower paced, so expect that. But I thought it had some thrilling moments and I really liked the fact that it was based on a true story. I would recommend it.

Good. Could have been more exciting

Chris Cooper's performance was creepy good but the movie wasn't satisfying or eventful. Lots of psychological suspense, not much plot movement. Always good to see Laura Linney but I wouldn't recommend this movie even though it's probably better than most garbage out there. No benefiting from the soft bigotry of low expectations with me. No grading on a curve here. There are better political thrillers

One of 2007's most underrated movies. A fantastic political thriller that builds character development as a key component to it's suspense. Chris Cooper is fantastic in the lead role.

Good movie that keeps you guessing. Based on a true story and the acting is great.

Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillipe, and Laura Linney star in the true story of the most serious breach in U.S. history Robert Hanssen was arrested for espionage; specifically working for the Russians since the 1980s, so much of the damage he inflicted remains classified to this day Four months earlier he was a part of our government's security His new partner was Eric O' Neil low level surveillance working with the FBI His boss Kate Burroughs assigned him to watch over Hanssen trying to expose his eye nature as a secret operative ; Hanssen was labeled as top of the line, a gifted computer analyst, faithful, family-oriented and a sexual deviant With Eric his task proves difficult attempting to gain Hanssen's trust without being compromised They need Eric to catch him in the act before making a full arrest Slow, somber but filled with committed performances You just wish it would move a bit faster and provide actual details of what Hanssen actually did to raise suspicions

Slower than what you might expect from a spy thriller, but sprinkled with tense moments, ‘Breach' eschews action and instead focuses on the characters. On the one side we have the young FBI agent (as well as his superior) who's trying to maintain his cover as the case begins to put more and more strain on him and his relationship with his wife; and on the other side we have the spy himself: enigmatic, ultra-cautious and constantly assessing his risk of being caught. Chris Cooper's excellent, nuanced performance as said spy really holds the film together. It remains suspenseful by keeping us constantly wondering how much he knows, what he's going to do next, and it keeps you interested by gradually allowing you to get to know the character as you go from wondering why such a man would betray his country to, slowly but surely, understanding him enough to see the answer. It might not be the most exciting spy thriller you'll ever see, but it's an interesting character-study that is consistently engaging.

I love movie's based on true stories! This is outrageous espionage and traitor events planned by one man acting solely on his own which is terrifying because it's at the highest level of security.

Billy Ray's Breach is an excellent film. Maybe the reason it is so good is that it's based on a true story. It's a spy thriller for adults, with a story so incredible that no lazy pyrotechnics or gadgets or chase scenes or gratuitous violence are needed to keep our interest. Chris Cooper is mesmerizing, a 5 star performance. Ryan Philippe is very good and believable in a difficult role. Both are restrained and nuanced. Well done !

Tomatoman say: "Powered by Chris Cooper's masterful performance, Breach is a tense and engaging portrayal of the FBI's infamous turncoat." Well-said. Blobbo agree with Tomatoman.

Decent "catch a spy" thriller, with an exceptional performance by Chris Cooper.

Breach is so-so. The filmmakers eschew the standard spy blow-em-up formula for a tense (is he on to me?) character study. I vaguely recall the Hanssen spy case breaking, but didn't know any details. The film covers his life and his deviancies, but not REALLY his reason for treason, other than his job dissatisfaction. The agent assigned to follow him likewise gets his life exposed to the camera, but not really in any significant and deep way. You also know at the beginning who the traitor is - there is no who-dunnit here - I THINK they were going for 'why did he do it', but in the end, the film states explicitly 'it doesn't really matter why you did it.' It felt like only the superficial part of the story is being told here.

Philippe's performance is very meh, and the film gets bogged down in dialogue and exploring relationships instead of providing the espionage thriller promised.

Chris Cooper was at his finest. The movie was incredible I think.

Well made but not especially memorable. You have seen it done better but the actors do there best.

Compelling story. Tightly edited and directed. Well acted. No big names; just really great work.

Still relevant. Still exciting and suspenseful. A good 'read'!
