Breakthrough Reviews

An experience that feels more at home on an evening slot on Channel 5 rather than at the cinema. At best it’s bland and predictable, and at worst it’s irritatingly preachy.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 14, 2024

The script is sexist and bordering on misogynistic. Sadly, this film brought out my inner feminist.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 19, 2022

Breakthrough is also that rare faith-based film that gives some respect to the medical community.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 4, 2020

A poignant picture of a family driven by faith, but not immune to the pain of crises.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 29, 2020

Sure, it gets a little bit melodramatic here and there, but what's a good family drama without a little cheese?

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 2, 2020

This is a lot better crafted, acted, and has a better cast than a lot of these kinds of films ordinarily do.

Although some of the film's moment are reminiscent of a Hallmark movie...its good intentions balance out the cringe-worthy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 31, 2019

This brand of lazy, simple-minded propaganda is long past its sell-by date, and Breakthrough does next to nothing to break out of that cycle.

| Jul 3, 2019

There is literally one moment in which it raises an interesting theological problem, then goes right back to what it was doing before...a movie designed to preach to the choir.

This Is Us regular Chrissy Metz makes her presence felt as the boy's mum, and Topher Grace and Josh Lucas bring modest star power to a slick if sometimes slushy against-the-odds drama that's perfectly watchable, whether you subscribe to its claims or not.

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 17, 2019

Here is another illustration of how the faith-based drama has pushed into cinemas material indistinguishable from vast swathes of the afternoon 온라인카지노추천 schedule.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 17, 2019

A bold tale of faith is lifted by some decent performances, however the inert narrative breaks the spell.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 16, 2019

Breakthrough could have been done in an interesting way had its makers not been intent on turning it into a Sunday school recruitment video.

| Original Score: 1/5 | May 16, 2019

As the film's saccharine sanctimoniousness swells, the intendedly God-awesome turns to the increasingly God-awful.

| Original Score: 1/5 | May 15, 2019

I wished it wasn't targeting its demographic so hard, it felt like things were forced in there, but I still enjoyed it.

| Apr 26, 2019

It's moving, painful, to watch...because there's such a good cast and such a compelling story, a lot of this works...but it's undermined, a little heavy-handed when it didn't need to be...still, one of the best faith-based movies I've seen.

At each and every crossroad, it feels as if you hit a brick wall with a red neon message scrolled before you just in case you missed what was happening. With contrived and sometimes stilted situations, the film lost its verve.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 22, 2019

Better directed and better acted than other examples of the genre I have taken in, it earns a closer look. However, what really hurts BREAKTHROUGH for me as a work of film, though, is its repeated handwaving at truly complex issues.

...divine and soul-searching. Breakthrough is warmly inviting for its ability to be honest, moving, melancholy, and deliver its truthfulness in profound revelation.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 21, 2019

Shallow - yet inspirational - aimed directly at an evangelical Christian audience.
