Breathe Reviews
A moving film that examines the effects of a debilitating illness to the afflicted and their families, as well as the physical and emotional strains that come with it.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 31, 2024
Breathe will bring a lump to the throat with its passionate but un-showy telling of two individuals who sought to change the status quo.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 25, 2021
Breathe doesn't have the gravitas of The Theory of Everything - it spends too much time trying to wring all the emotion out of the story like tears from a sponge - but it does have compassion and heart.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 1, 2021
As disability dramas go, Breathe won't leave you gasping. But if it lacks The Theory of Everything's emotional heft, it remains an inspiring and affecting tale.

Alas, as far as mainstream studio cinema is concerned, the disabled are still merely props for us to aspire in matching their bravery. Maybe it's time we told their stories with some empathy rather than pity.

Breathe separates itself from the pack in its production.

Andy Serkis' first directorial effort is traditional to a fault. His sole focus seems to be to move the plot forward, in circumstances the best moments of Breathe take place whenever he takes the foot off the gas.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 27, 2020
Endearing, inspirational and beautifully shot, Breathe is an emotional journey that highlights powerful performances from Garfield and Foy.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 12, 2019
This is a tearjerker, but it shows how little moments can be transformed into adventures.

Everybody else is a haze of very British window-dressing and they play their parts without fuss or sentimentality. Lest you construe that as a compliment, I'll make it clear that it's a shame, because a little bit of syrup might've spiced things up.

Serkis controls the tone well, and knows how to manage the talent of the two protagonists. [Full Review in Spanish]

Breathe is an inspirational, romantic crowd-pleaser of a film about a couple who refused to accept things as they were and transformed the future for others.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 26, 2019
A stunning debut from Serkis, Breathe is an old-fashioned love story that will sweep you off your feet and keep you enraptured until the very end.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 22, 2019
Thanks to the sterling performances drawn by Serkis, especially from his two leads, characters are all exquisitely well-drawn.

With just the slightest shift of his glance or the quiver of his lip, Garfield conveys as much as his grandest gestures in other films.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Jan 24, 2019
It may not reach the heights of The Theory of Everything, but Breathe delivers a sweeping, uplifting movie about a story that WAS great to find out more about.

BREATHE makes you want to do more than just breathe. It makes you want to live.

What is most impressive about Breathe is its unimpressiveness. And that is a sincere compliment.

In excellent though somewhat linear performances, Garfield and Foy deal with their personal catastrophe with stiff upper lips, understated humour and indomitable decency and devotion.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 17, 2018
I never quite felt like Breathe could move past being a collection of scenes stitched together, nice though some of them were.
