The Brood Reviews

Feb 23, 2025

Totally amateur laughably bad terrible acting no sense of tension. Stupid story not frightening in the least. It’s shocking that David Cronenberg made this. It’s like a made for 온라인카지노추천 movie. They obviously took some liberties with this script. Reminds me of that one Star Trek episode with those crazy kids.boring.a lot of dead time where nothing happens. It got a lot better with scanners. I should’ve rented that instead

If you look past the surface level genre elements the themes have aged remarkably well (rage, even understandable rage, is a destructive force that harms everyone and sometimes therapy enables instead of helping) Also, while you may not have experienced anything literally like what happens in this movie, break-ups/divorces can certainly feel like this.

🎃 Finally dipped into Cronenberg's early work and: Fascinating stuff! The Brood is a mix of social drama—more specifically, divorce drama—and body horror. The often graphic images and themes are further intensified by the strong focus on the child’s perspective. 🔨 For me, The Brood can be viewed in two ways: First, as a sci-fi horror film with body horror elements, where mutant children hunt humans and kidnap other children. And second, as a raw reflection of a family crisis: We see signs of abuse on the daughter's back, alleged affairs, conversations with lawyers, and a once-loving couple locked in battle, with a bloody newborn between them. Cronenberg also hints that family trauma, domestic violence, and perhaps mental illness(?) are passed down through generations. 👧🏼 As for how exactly Oliver Reed’s therapy works, I can't say. But it's definitely fun to watch him in action.

It feels like it should just be another bad 1980s monster horror movie, but Cronenberg has a strange way of making those movies good. It is mostly saved by it's disgusting ending.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone with a weak stomach. Didn't age well.

Cronenberg classic. Not as good as others like Videodrome or Scanners, but a well made film nonetheless in which the actors actually make an effort. Plenty of twisted weirdness, as could be expected by his earlier films.

The Lord Of The Rings.

Perhaps David Cronenberg's most personal film. In it, he vents the horrors of divorce, psychoanalysis and separation from children; all that with the body horror concept of it. With everything and his ups and downs, it is a curiosity to be exploited.

A cracker from Cronenberg. There are nasty murders, creepy killers (dwarf-like mutants which echo Don't Look Now) and an interesting psychological angle. Watching it again, I was reminded what a powerful screen presence Oliver Reed is. He's great here as a cultish psychiatrist. Samantha Eggar is wonderfully unhinged too. The movie still stands up well in my view. The nursery scene, in particular, is spine-chillingly good.

Twisted tale of a cult of mutant children, their cult leader, and their weird normal half sibling, all caught in the middle of the two feuding parents.

A husband begins to distrust the treatment his wife is getting at the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics. What's that in the kitchen? Very strange but it's Cronenberg. This is another gem I missed seeing when I was younger. The film is loaded with themes: mental health; childhood; fidelity; psychiatry; trust. Loved the ending. I should make a list of my favorite horror films dealing with motherhood. Seem to be viewing a lot lately.

The Brood offers the familiar body horror that David Cronenberg does so well. I found the pacing to be a bit slow. There's a lot of time devoted to exploring the main character's failing marriage. I nodded off between the exciting bits. It was entertaining but I would only watch this again if there were nothing better to choose from.

Repulsive! Fantastic!

The Brood is maybe the most personal film David Cronenberg has ever made, considering he wrote it in response to a nasty divorce and child custody battle that he'd just been through, which might explain its downbeat and often brutal nature. Using the leads as avatars for himself and his now ex-wife, its clear that he not only felt resentment towards his spouse, but also a lot of self-pity. Frank, played somewhat rigidly by Art Hindle, feels animosity towards his wife Nola, but also acknowledges his own role in the collapse of the marriage, and takes steps to fix what he can, including shielding his daughter from what's happening to her parents. The psychological methods performed by Dr. Raglan are a fascinating concept that I wish the film had explored further, rather than going down the murder mystery route that leads to what I suppose you could consider the twist in the tale, which is about the only element of body horror the movie has. Cronenberg himself considers this to be his most straightforward horror film to date, and so this element's late inclusion feels more tacked on than it should. It was made during a difficult time in Cronenberg's life, and was just before he hit his stride with films like Scanners & Videodrome, but it's still an enjoyably twisted film that fans of the writer/director should see, just don't expect it to become one of your favourites.

Great horror movie with killer asexual mongoloid children connected physically by the "mother".. they reproduce by injecting their one egg into a sentient organism

(Spoilers) Another body horror masterpiece from Cronenberg, the director that invented the genre; and perfected it with the perfect splatter trifecta of Scanners; Rabid; the Fly; and now this; which he calls his "Kramer vs Kramer." (Maybe "I Love You To Death" or "War of the Roses" are better comparisons... Or even Fatal Attraction.) Indeed, this is a thriller which concerns itself with the horrific fallout from a toxic marriage. Samantha Eggar and Art Hinkle are tied up in a messy divorce; during which Eggar goes to a special retreat/ rehabilitation center where she meets with various new agey psychiatrists who try to get her on the right path to recovery. They, and the other scientists and doctors there, do all sorts of weird experimentation on the depressed Eggar; giving her special medications and concoctions meant to put her in a better mood; but which start turning her into a monstrous queen-bee gollem incubator; shooting out little faceless albino trolls which do her every conscious and unconscious bidding; like brutally murdering her husband's new girlfriend. Like with all Cronenberg movies, the star here really is the gore; and Cronenberg heaps that on aplenty. Not for the squeamish, but if you are a hardcore horror fanatic with an open mind; the many classic grandguinal set pieces presented here will leave you more than satisfied. Especially Edgar's special thing she does with the afterbirth. Recommended.

Cronenberg, going through a messy divorce, writes a movie about an upright man looking to protect his daughter from her mentally disturbed and physically abusive mother, from whom he is estranged. It's like if Stephen King wrote a book about how detestable the 1985 Dodge Caravan is, right after he got hit by one. Among the earliest of Cronenberg's 'classic'-era films, The Brood served as the director's entry point into the body horror genre, though he uses practical effects relatively sparingly. Some have called it among his most competently made films, though I'm a bit more hesitant about it. There's careful pacing and a willingness to invest in character rather than going down some strange exploitation rabbit hole, but the film undergoes a strange transition towards its final act. For most of the runtime, we're left with a series of narrative breadcrumbs, puzzling at Oliver Reed's charismatic scheming (which he does oh so well), but the ultimate explanation is so strange that it sort of undermines the more grounded psychological elements of the first hour or so. It's not like Scanners, Videodrome, or The Fly are based in reality, but they embrace their insanity from the get-go where this feels more like a rug-pull. Thematically, The Brood feels oddly misplaced, very anti-woman and oddly disparaging of the mentally impaired; Samantha Eggar gives an involved performance as Nola, but the film is bound and determined to cast her in this malevolent light when nominally she's a victim of abuse and manipulation. Cronenberg himself stated that the depiction draws heavily on his own experiences at the time, and it seems like he just transposed his vitriol for his former wife onto a woman that causes harm unknowingly and acts on emotion. But the end effects are appropriately stomach-turning so...? I don't know, shit's weird. (3/5)

Just got into Cronenberg films and this one was the best! This movie is so different than any other horror movie. It's visually stunning, a little strange (but in a very good way), the actors are all amazing especially Art Hindle (such a great actor/talent and so handsome you can't take your eyes off of him! Just a stunning looking human being! I wish he was in more films) and the story is very interesting…keeps you on the edge of your seat. This movie is perfect for 70s & 80s horror and sci-fi fans. I will for sure purchase this movie and watch more Cronenberg films. Great director and very creative! A must watch!
