Brotherhood of the Wolf Reviews
I think the director must of been on drugs and to enjoy it, the audience should be on drugs. This was one painful movie. It just went on and on and on. The main protagonist is a combination of Grasshopper, Daniel Boone, and both characters in Dumb and Dumber. Beware.
Watching this in 2024, I felt the bad CGI kept taking me out of the moment. It's a shame because I enjoyed it otherwise. Worth a watch.
Its genre-mashing makes for strange bedfellows, but Brotherhood of the Wolf is nevertheless a neat diversion into historical folklore.
2024: this movie does not age well at all
Massively underrated at the time, this French historic/fantasy genre movie stands out above the rest. Even the dubbing in the English version is done well!
Based on a famous French legend, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF is an early example of now-common genre mashup, effectively blending historical drama, gothic horror, martial arts action and more. Two aspects haven't aged well: an Asian "Native American" character, and some crucial special effects. That said, the film remains richly atmospheric and often entertaining, even if the plot and pacing don't always cohere. [Reviewing the 2.5 hour Director's Cut]
A gloriously pulpy mashup of genres with Gans making a compelling case for style being substance.
This was a great movie at the time. Fun style and interesting story. It was also a good movie to show to a cute French international student ;)
I gave it 4 stars because I don't like subtitles
Classic action/horror movie. Interesting story, great cast, beautiful music. Mark Dacascos is amazing.
Fantastic foreign language film great story and action that is still fresh in my mind years after watching it years ago, I must watch it again.
Fantastic lead actors
awesome story actors and movie, please make another
A muddled overlong story that fails to convincingly establish the motivations of its villains. The action sequences are boring, featuring floaty, inconsequential feeling combat. Too bad as the premise and time period could have been used well.
gosh; i've tried to watch this movie twice now - & i made it much farther the 2nd time - but i just can't finish it. why is it 2.5 hours long?! i will admit i enjoyed the ridiculous kill scenes, but the majority of it is just too boring. & sometimes the effects look cool but other times they look awful. I'm not going to try to watch it a third time.
This seemed to me like a supernatural type folk tale, a little bit like Sleep Hollow. The rural and historical setting made me think of the series Outlander. It is certainly somewhat dark in terms of both lighting and tone and there are some impressive fight scenes, including hand to hand combat. At times there are some pretty decent special effects too. However, I felt a little confused by the plot development and I was a bit lost half way through, about what precisely had happened. It wasn't quite as compelling a watch as I'd hoped but its not an entirely bad film, its about average overall I suppose. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see this as such but if its shown and it sounds interesting then it may be worth a look, nothing more.
After 20 years, I watched this again tonight. Beautiful movie, great action and (loosely) based on historical events. Can't recommend it enough!
Bonkers romantic werewolf period drama martial arts movie. In French. It's unique and pretty amazing!
The best worst French film ever made! I found it hugely entertaining and surprisingly watchable. Still better than some of the crap being made today.
