Bull Durham Reviews
I know nothing of baseball (my excuse: I'm German). But when I mentioned this movie to a baseball-loving friend of mine, his eyes lit up and he said that he had seen it countless times and knew the dialogue by heart. But even without baseball chops, I liked this. Excellent cast and very funny (esp Tim Robbins)!
Pointless. stupid, has nothing to do with baseball Doesn't even have respect for the game. I have no respect for the two main characters who lead pointles existences.
Kevin Costner was absolutely superb
Best baseball movie. Some of the best writing and most memorable lines.
The flat narrative, unfocused plotlines, and poorly crafted characters that fail to resonate make Bull Durham fall far short of expectations.
I don't get it, never have. Saw it in theater, thought it was terrible. Have seen it a couple more times over the years, still didn't like it. Not really a baseball film, as Robbins has zero baseball skills. More closely resembles a Cinemax after dark movie as the sex scenes are pretty graphic, for some bizarre reason. I like all the actors in this film, so it's not personal. I just hate this film.
The story of how an aging minor-league ball player steals the show as his stars burning out and helps a cocky pitcher hone his craft, whilst a team groupie makes her rounds and hints at her crush on the aging ball player. The lesson I suppose is something about sloppy seconds. Assholes get ahead, good hearts get left behind, and poetry-loving minor league groupies get left in bed after getting it from behind.
"I'm the player to be named later."
Not sure how this is rated so high. This movie was boring and didn’t go anywhere.
this movie is more bull than it is durham
I'm not big into watching baseball, but Bull Durham is talked about so often when sports movies are being discussed, that I decided to give it a shot. And you know what? I enjoyed the baseball scenes. In fact, almost any time the players were on the field, I was entertained. Unfortunately, I didn't really care for the story off the field. Susan Sarandon, Kevin Costner, and Tim Robbins all did a fine job acting, I just didn't like their characters or the choices they made. It's also much more tawdry and vulgar than it needed to be. It could have been a pretty great romantic comedy, if not for that.
In the vast landscape of streaming services, delving into the depths can lead to extraordinary discoveries. "Bull Durham" proves to be one such hidden gem, evoking the adventurous spirit of exploration. Despite my initial hesitation, this baseball-themed classic transcends time with its enduring appeal. The film's ability to stand the test of time is truly remarkable. While some elements may raise eyebrows in today's context, it serves as a fascinating window into the past, showcasing the societal norms of a different era. Nevertheless, "Bull Durham" remains a simple, yet profoundly enjoyable cinematic experience. At the heart of the film's brilliance are the captivating performances delivered by Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, breathing life into their characters with authenticity and depth. Through their portrayals, they showcase the essence of staying true to oneself, enriching the overall narrative. "Bull Durham" is a cinematic triumph that deserves praise and recognition. In my critical evaluation, I confidently rate it a hard 8/10. It may have taken me some time to uncover this gem, but its timeless charm and genuine performances have left an indelible mark on my cinematic journey.
Some good performances in movie not really about baseball, more about being a 2nd rate rom-com, It's well shot and has a snazy soundtrack but lacks re-watchablity.
Greatest movie of all time. SS should have easily won Oscar for best actress
This one missed the mark a little for me. Besides Crash and Nuke the rest of the team is pretty limp personality wise. Costner is good and is clearly actually good at baseball, but his big speech in the movie is I dunno, completely insane??
Without a doubt, THE greatest sports movie EVER made! Nothing comes close. Cast, script, directing, realism -- all are A+!
Good movie. Great acting. Nice story
Very Funny, Heartfelt and Fun to Watch. The Acting, Soundtrack and Editing are all A Really good time to watch. Saradon is excellent and the best character in this. The main trio get the focus and the rest really blend in but they never are given any realy attempts at character so it's not a problem. This is masterfully edited also and blends romance with a sports movie completely seamlessly. It's super focused, witty, and filled with sharp dialouge. The only problem I had with this film overall was its humor and dialogue at times is VERY VERY Niche and expects someone to know a lot about baseball at a dedicated fan level. A lot of lines because of that felt over my head and some of the humor also was funny but I felt I didn't fully understand it because of the lack of knowing Baseball ins and outs especially at the Minor level. This is in contrast to something like The Natural or The Sandlot where if you know the basics of baseball you'll understand everything. But that being said its a charming, witty and Classic Sports Movie and 80's Classic.
Totally ridiculous baseball movie about a pitcher who cannot pitch at all at the beginning of the movie. He would not have been kept in real life even in a minor league team. Susan Satandon plays a woman who apparently chooses a baseball player to sleep with each season. Other female character plays an equally vacuous part.
