Bullitt Reviews
‘…while the 110 mph car chase is one of cinema’s most visceral scenes, the whole package just sings as a study of driven machismo…
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jan 23, 2024
Over 54 years after its release, Bullitt remains one of the best thrillers in cinematic history with much thanks to its historic chase sequence.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 4, 2023
Here is lean, mean perfection in the treatment of a screen standard, the detective melodrama. Steve McQueen is in top form as the convention-flouting cop involved in thwarting gangsters.

...seems to have established the template for a certain kind of cop movie (and television show).
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 23, 2021
Fast cars, a go-it-alone cop who doesn't trust the system, Steve McQueen, jazz, and 1968 San Francisco - it just doesn't get more quintessentially American than that.
| Original Score: 10/10 | May 11, 2021
Good as it is, Bullitt inevitably leaves one wondering: Why doesn't somebody make a movie about the real social significance of cops-and-robbers: police brutality?

It's always McQueen's movie. He's snappy, laconic and cynical in equal doses, and his performance is complemented by the assured support of Robert Vaughn as a sleazy politician whose interference gets under the cool cop's skin.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 13, 2021
So forget the story. It's confusing and ambiguous anyway, maybe even banal. But let the color, noise, action and hardware put their hex on you.

McQueen perfects the renegade cop template.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Aug 24, 2020
Bullitt keeps a shriek ascending through the last reel.

It is simply one of the most exciting and intelligent action films in years, probably the best good-cop film we can expect to encounter.

This feeling of life around the edges of the action is BuIlitt's special note.

Bullitt takes a rather simple nugget of a story and turns it into a crime classic through the expert use of location footage, editing, music, mood and timing, not to mention the laconic, stoic performance of ultra-cool star Steve McQueen.
| May 7, 2010
Surprisingly austere and very much of its time, Bullitt is a lot less fun and a lot more impressive than you might expect.

Good scripting and excellent direction by Peter Yates maintain deliberately low-key but mounting suspense.
| Mar 1, 2007
Expert chase film, breathless and modern, that sent McQueen to the top of the box office heap.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Mar 1, 2007
There isn't much here, and what there is is awfully easy.

Apart from the classic chase scene, there many other pleasures to be had in this stylish policier, one that changed considerably the entire vocabulary of Hollywood's action-thrillers.
| Original Score: A- | Feb 7, 2007
The action sequences are brilliant, done without trickery in real locations (including a great car chase which spawned a thousand imitations) to lend an extraordinary sense of immediacy to the shenanigans and gunfights.
