Bullitt Reviews
Chalmers's role needed clarification. Also, cops should have chosen another hotel room. That one was not defensible.
One of the best police procedural/action films ever! McQueen, San Fran, a souped up Mustang... unmatched!
steve Mcqueen makes this movie with his absolute coolness..
Main character is a dick. It was his job to protect a witness and he was hanging out and sleeping with a chic. The way he was eating in the hospital seems cold. Why a shooter left a policeman alive when he knew that fire hit his leg. That dick (lead character failed again in protecting the guy in hospital. This movie irritates me deeply.
How can Steve McQueen burning rubber in a 67' Mustang not be a All Time Classic? McQueen is amazing in this and besides the car chase the best thing in this. He's ice cold and all the close ups of him with a cool demeanor and scowl, it's no wonder he became one of the coolest actors ever. The car chase is amazing and the ending also at the airport is super underrated also. The editing, cinematography, and soundtrack are excellent. This has such a memorable location, amazing action scenes, and an awesome lead. This balances going from gritty to super nice to look at effortlessly. Everyone else is really good but not as memorable as Queen. The pacing is excellent also. This does from slow burn, straight action, to suspense effortlessly. This releis a lot more on suspense than action in certain parts which it succeeds at very well. The plot is good too, but McQueen, solid direction, and the car chase really elevate it. Heat 100% took inspiration from the end of this also. Everyone should give this a try. I can see why this is one of those films that kicked off the hard gritty crime flicks of the 70's and cop flicks of the 80's.
A precursor to Dirty Harry that is famous for its chase scene. The chase scene really shows everything good about this movie. It's extremely realistic even in the most unrealistic trope of Hollywood with the chase scene. The way the cars move, the damages, the thrills, everything feels real and the excitement is more like the adrenaline that contains some of the anxiety within it. The whole movie follows the realism in all the procedures, be it of the ongoing investigation and other police procedurals, or the medical procedures that are a part of it. The film is also successful at making the greyness of both Bullitt and Chalmers have another side to them, all the while making sure which side it is on. But a lot of these '60s films give me a feeling that they departed from the style of the 50s but don't exactly know what its style is for which it had to reach the 70s. Overall, a pretty good Copaganda of its time.
The coolest actor in the best car chase ever filmed.
The legendary Steve McQueen in an iconic movie. You better watch this.
This hasn't aged well. Slow.
Great story and action with the King of Cool. Great car chase in SF. A classic and Steve McQueen at his best.
Steve McQueen perfection. In his coolest role, Steve is perfect as the 70s hard boiled detective. The best chase scene ever filmed. Best of its 70s cop-flick genre. Must watch.
First came Bullitt, then Dirty Harry, both set in San Francisco. Both characters were reputedly inspired by the same SF homicide detective, Dave Toschi. Toschi was portrayed by Mark Ruffolo in the 2007 film, Zodiac. Clint is best, imo.
Probably the most overrated Steve McQueen film that I have seen, but still was a good time for me as well.
Robert Vaughn teaches a class in acting as the duplicitous Senator, Walter Chalmers. The audience is left wanting more from Trustman and Kleiner's treatment of Bullitt's life away from the chase, apart from his love of coffee. While little character exists for Bullitt on the page, McQueen breathes sensitivity and resolve into the lieutenant. It is easy to see how this film helped change the way action sequences were filmed. Yates puts the viewer in harms way, so hold on to your seat.
The car chase scene is spectacular but other than that, there is nothing special about this movie.
I've watched this movie as a child, as a teen, as a young adult, and recently as a fully mature man. Many many times. Each time the thrill of the car chase scene ending in the terrible crash is what I look forward to the most. Other director's have attempted to do a chase scene on their movies like this one. However, there is only one that comes close to me.. and that's from the movie "The Seven-Ups" with Roy Scheider as a tough as nails cop that was released in 1973. The rest of this movie drags on a little from time to time but I believe Steve McQueen's acting and his persona holds the film together. Although, I know how it's going to end, I will continue to watch it until I expire one day; because the scene in that 68 hunter green Mustang coming up over the hill, behind the Black Charger, gets my juices flowing... again and again reminding of the time I first saw it as a young seven year old. Thanks for reading through this, I normally would never do it but I did it anyway, this time.
Super slick movie about how and why a key witness to a govenment case was shot, and the pursuit to find the killers and the conspiracy that brought it all about. Steve McQueen is awesome as the title role here. Very cool. but still with lots of dark edges to it. Features all sorts of great chase sequences (you already know that, I kinda didn't). and also is a GREAT education in late 60s culture.. Police Work, Fashion, Technologies, Women, Cars, and most especially, airports. A real treat.
This film was very late 60s/early 70s and it's a bit dated now, however that car chase was completely badass and unforgettable. It was really neat with how they did that sequence with the music and the directing. Steve McQueen did well in his role and I feel like the city where it took place along with the general vibe and plot angles/character motivations in the film helped inspire the first Dirty Harry movie perhaps! Other than a couple chase scenes and scenes with intense kills, this movie was largely quiet and soft with its tone with didn't always make it really entertaining. Just watch the car chase on YouTube like I once did and you'll be satisfied.
There isn't much here besides the cars.
