Burlesque Reviews

The glory of what Burlesque does well outshines any mistake.

| Nov 30, 2021

...most people unfortunate to be involved in them come away with deep rooted and painful psychological scars. I'll conclude by saying I can't see that being any different for anyone who spends any time with Burlesque.

| Original Score: 0.5/5 | May 25, 2021

It has no story arc, no dramatic tension, just a lot of bump-and-grind. That'll be enough for people with a taste for camp but like the art form it is named after the movie is all tease and no follow through.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 31, 2021

You'll be hard-pressed to find a more vibrant, energetic and musically inclined film this year.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 4, 2020

Somewhere in this two-hour campy homage to the Golden Age of musicals, I found the film won me over with its old-fashioned and rather cornball simplicity

| Original Score: B- | May 8, 2019

Burlesque cribs from any number of trashy pictures about showbiz, but it's not nearly as much fun as Showgirls.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 30, 2019

Burlesque is so old-fashioned in its storytelling that it feels like what's happening inside the club is a time-warp from 50 years ago, while everything outside the Burlesque Lounge feels like "Dancing With the Stars" present-day in tone.

| Mar 30, 2019

In the end, Burlesque falls short in the originality and depth department but if you're in search of music videos masquerading as a movie, it just might be your ticket. Or soundtrack.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 30, 2019

Sure, the whole thing is obvious and silly and ridiculous, but Burlesque is really comfortable in its own skin.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 30, 2019

Reminds one too much of Coyote Ugly. [Full review in Spanish]

The movie still has enough plucky "you-go-girl" spirit that you will leave the theater entertained.

| Original Score: C+ | Mar 28, 2019

Magnificently awful.

| Mar 28, 2019

It hits all its marks splendidly: it's kitsch that never turns Quatsch.

It's impossible to know if [Christina Aguilera's] actually acting, since the music-video cutting rhythms don't give her time to sustain so much as a compound sentence, not that the script provides any.

| Mar 28, 2019

Christina Aguilera manages to bring an unforced charm to her first starring role, making Burlesque a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 28, 2019

Still, this isn't a movie about plot, or subtlety. I found simple pleasure sitting in the theater watching it.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 28, 2019

As Burlesque ground along its obvious and well-worn path, my inner voice indeed shouted, "Take it off," though my request was directed toward the projection booth rather than the dancers onstage.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Mar 28, 2019

And it's this tension that rescues Burlesque - a film cursed with being too competent to be a Showgirls-style guilty pleasure, and too ropey to be really recommendable.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 28, 2019

If Burlesque was just an Aguilera stage show, it would be completely satisfying. Unfortunately, movies require actual plot and dialogue and when it comes to both, the film leaves much to be desired.
