Café Society Reviews
Café Society, written and directed by Woody Allen, proposes a nostalgic trip to the United States of the 30s embedded in jazz and classic cinema. However, the story will be much more than that, it will also remind us of the uniqueness of the first love.

Perhaps “Café Society” strolls at its own pace and perhaps Woody Allen is in cruise control with his latter films. Still I had a lot of fun with this one.

Café Society, more than any Allen film in recent memory, feels like a jumbled hodgepodge of ideas.

Its all right, an average dramedy with a touch of old world (and Jewish) idiosyncrasy. ... The ending doesn't work. ... Here fantasy hits a brickwall.

if you must stick to a formula, there are worse ones to follow. Even in this low gear, the points about relationships are as salient as ever, helped along by Eisenberg in restrained and likeable form.

Embroidered with the odd punch line and hints of melancholy.

The name of the club was meant ironically. This was not the locale for the rich and officially celebrated.

Cafe Society is a sunny, warm, and gentle film, perfect for the young at heart.

It is a shame that with this romantic comedy Woody Allen's cinema suffers the wear and tear of a routine that resorts to repeating itself with ease. His grace is only passable when he feels like it. [Full review in Spanish]

While it may not interest you to wonder if and when Jesse officially inherits the Allen baton, Cafe Society is funny enough to push the matter out of mind for this summer treat until final credits roll.

[Woody] Allen pushes himself beyond his patented funny and delivers a film with emotionally resonant characters (but still dealing with myriad neuroses) and a story as rich as the film's visuals.

Woody Allen has a way of capturing the tone and essence of whatever setting and time period he is highlighting and transports the viewer seamlessly into that world.

The costumes and production design are impeccable and it is a pleasant enjoyable story of old town Hollywood.

Effortlessly well-made cinematic comfort food at its warmest.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 26, 2019
The period detail of locations and costumes is faultless.

A fine movie for a late summers evening.

CAFÉ SOCIETY is so many things combined into one stellar picture that makes you love being in love with the movies again.
| Original Score: B+ | Dec 10, 2018
Nostalgic in setting yet candid in tone. The events are predictable, but that is partially the point.

[The film's] power builds over time through the subtle gut punches thrown at each character's prideful egos. Vittorio Storaro's sun-kissed cinematography makes that transition entirely seamless.

"Café Society" is plagued by dull characters, ridiculous dialogue, and an essence that is half dreamy, half cynical.
